Lyrics for Broken as interpreted by Alucard

Broken Lyrics
She said
Thanks but I'm broken
I guess
You must have misspoken
What a laugh
I've never been chosen by anyone

She was barely a teen
Hanging out in between
Just a part of the scene
With mercurial smile
And incurable style
She was only a dream
How's that
He didn't know a thing about
Making love to the kind of girl you read about

He said
I'm bound to be broken
My Daddy bet
That I'd amount to nothing
He won't let anybody show him anything

He was a troubled child
Had been down for a while
Always kept to himself
No she couldn't defend
He only wanted a friend
Now he's made something else
It's so sad no one saw it coming
The paper said that he hit the ground running

Oh yeah
I know I'm not broken
A little cracked
But still I'm not broken
I wanna laugh but I think that I'm choking on reality

When the
World is turning for you
Don't turn on me
Who are you here to repair
Well I don't know what you mean
You could never resist
Glorifying despair
Well now it's coming to you and I don't really care

Well I'm not
The kind to insist
You couldn't have missed
We must co exist
So please listen to me
There is no such thing as human debris

Oh yeah
I know I'm not broken
A little cracked
But that amounts to nothing
I wanna laugh
I'm not joking

I'm unbroken
Oh yeah I said I'm unbroken
I said I'm unbroken
A little cracked it's just a token
I'm really not broken
What a guess I'm unbroken

I feel that this song is basicly about how a lot of people have treated him badly and hit him down, hes got chucked by his girl his dad thinks hes a waste of space. hes sayin that although this has affected him "a little cracked" he is still able to come out fighting and carry on with his life " im not broken" well thats what the song seems to me n in some kinda ways it is a positive song

This is one of my favorite bad religion songs.
I think the boy gets the girl pregnant ("He only wanted a friend, Now he's made something else")
He just leaves her though ("the paper said that he hit the ground running") And all the things that docile_kipper said sound right.

this song is so not punk rock, and the video fucking sucks penis. I wish BR had retired when they hit old age, they really seem old hat compared to decent punk nowadays (not that i dont respect what they did for the punk rock scene)

If you don't like it, don't comment on it. Quite frankly, I think Bad Religion rocks and "The process of belief" album is excellent...

first off, if you decide to comment on a song, at least come up with an intelligent arguement to why you dont like it, because personally, i think, that if you argue a song or what not is not good and it "fucking sucks penis" not too many people are going to find you intelligent enough to give a shit about your opinion. goodday

Lets kill music. If you are to ignorant to apreciate Bad Religion for their ideas and focus on whether they "sound punk" or the quality of their video how perhaps you should watch MTV? They have many quality multi million dollar videos their and empty meaningless songs. However if youd open your mind and your ears maybe you could acquire a greater apreciation for music and above all intelligence. Until then do not call yourself punk because you are a pop listener, whether you know it or not. Punk is about ideas and analyzing our world. Bad Religion is one of the most brilliant bands (the most brilliant in my opinion) to ever create music. But then again you are probably to simple minded to apreciate this.

lol, what a cool argument...I didn't really like the video for this song that much, however I love this song...It's one of my favorites from The Process of Belief. And I think Bad Religion still rocks, even in their old age.

I like the song, but the video does suck, it's just so... badly done. I like vids where it doesn't look like it was done by an amateur video company on a lazy Sunday, the effects in the video were just plain bad...

But the song rocks, so who cares?!

I haven't seen the video, but has it struck your mind that the quality might be bad on purpose? Why would a punk band spend millions on a music video? Coming from BR I wouldn't be amazed if they asked some amateurs to make the video... After all they do offer 5 grand scholarships...

It's just not right to diss Bad Religion whatever they do because they've done so much for the scene, hell they are the scene.

I believe the song's about someone who was put down all through his life or something along those lines, I'm tired...let it go.

i really love this song. bad religion is one of the few bands who, in my opinion, have become an even greater band with time. they say so much in their music and i respect them for that. anyone who can't see that is a fool.

this song... among many other things inspired the Broken tattoo on my back.. the idea that even if you go through some terrible things you can still come out fighting.. and repair yourself..

it's the idea that all odds are against you and you still manage to rise above..

Who are you to decide what's punk or not? Also, just because music isn't punk doesn't mean it's not good, idiot.

I applaud you for that statement! This song is dead awesome, but I haven't actually seen the video. Although I'm glad I know a little more about it was about because I had no fucking clue.

This is so beautiful: "So please listen to me - there is no such thing as human debris". it's a plea never to give up other people, however nasty or "broken" they must seem. Often we treat people as if they were "debris"; things like Capital Punishment to get them out of the place instead of dealing with the deeper rooted issues of poverty and education.

Does anyone else get the impression that the boy has raped the girl: "he only wanted a friend - now he's made something else" - something else = a child? The undertones do suggest rape, but it could easily be teenage sex leading to teenage parenthood, causing their lives to be "broken"?

I have it on reasonably good authority that Greg fucked a 14 year-old girl on the tour before this album - hence "barely a teen."

"The kind of girl you read about" may be a reference to fellow jailbait lover Rick James's "Superfreak".

This song is about feeling worthless. Felling that you don't deserve to be happy. (hence the mentions of everybody constantly putting them down, people telling him that he will never amount to anything even by his own dad, and people convincing the girl she is not worthwile by just ignoring her.

"He only wanted a friend
Now he's made something else
It's so sad no one saw it coming
The paper said that he hit the ground running"
May indeed mean that he got her pregnant but it seems to me that all that need have happened was they fell in love and it scared the hell out of him. (after all he didn't believe he deserved it and would mess it up)

The song ends with the realization that you aren't worthless even with your faults.

lets_kill_music seems indeed intent on killing music in favour of the watered down punk-pop we see on our music channels. Go Simple Plan! (Not that i have a problem with simple plan, but you know, the sarcasm had to appear). This song is amazing, even if it doesn't have a typical punk rock melody. I love the line "I wanna laugh but i think that i'm choking on reality" BR are genius.

I know it's undoubedly not based on this, but the song has striking comparisons to the book 'Vernon God Little' about a kid accused of being an accomplice in a high-school massacre. If anyone's read it they will realise why it has links (it even has the line "his father said that he'd amount to nothing") - he fantasises about a girl but doesn't kno what to do when he gets near her, runs away and is mis-represented by the newspapers (the paper said that he hit the ground running). Meh, just a thought.

The sound may not be punk to lets kill music, and I agree that BR's new music is a bit too mellow, but the songs all have punk meaning and have contributed to the active punk scene greatly. I have to say BR is a great band no matter what it sounds like. It's the lyrics that count guys.

I feel this song is from greg graffin's point of view talking about these people. All of which are in someway alienated. The girl believes she is broken because no one has ever chosen her. The boy believes he is broken because that is what hes been told. Greg is saying that being cracked is a token, perfection doesn't exist, the great thing is imperfection, and we as a society refuse to see that. Through alienation we destroy ourselves.

Also, bad religion is punk. Period. The only thing that could change that is if greg and brett both died.
