Now, I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do ya?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew ya
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, and she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

You say I took the name in vain
I don't even know the name
But if I did, well really, what's it to ya?
There's a blaze of light in every word
It doesn't matter which you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

I did my best, it wasn't much
I couldn't feel, so I tried to touch
I've told the truth, I didn't come to fool ya
And even though it all went wrong
I'll stand before the Lord of Song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah

Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah

    My Interpretation

I think it's a song about Satan's desire for love that permeates the human being and represents the eternal separation from God. It's a passionate and powerful love, but pales in the shadow of the light and love of God, and is bittersweet in comparison.

"They say there was a secret chord that David played and it pleased the Lord, but you don't really care for music do you?"

Satan is jealous of the secret relationship between God and a man who follows after his own heart. He doesn't care about the music even though the chord strikes true. He cares about the love and it makes him jealous. If he follows it to it's end it leads him to praising God anyway.

"Your faith was strong but you needed proof. You saw her bathing on the roof. Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you. She tied you to the kitchen chair. She broke your throne, she cut your hair, and from your lips she drew the hallelujah."

In David, Satan turned him towards love that may turn David away from God, a test between faith and love, and David failed. Everyone fails. It breaks their spirit, removes their light, destroys their throne, leaves them shameful with cut hair.

The other lyrics in this version and other versions are Satan's reconciliation with being once high and loved by God but being so jealous of an all-powerful love that did not belong solely to him that he was jealous of love itself, of God's love, of other beings' love, and of his own love.
