Lyrics for Fire And Rain as interpreted by oofus

Fire And Rain Lyrics
Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone
Susanne the plans they made put an end to you
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to

I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

Won't you look down upon me, Jesus
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way

Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again

Been walking my mind to an easy time my back turned towards the sun
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things
to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground

Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby, one more time again, now

Thought I'd see you one more time again
There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you fire and rain, now

There's a cool story that goes with this song, although it's false. Still, told well, it can be very touching. Unfortunately, it would also be lying...

Check out a hint of the fake story and the real thing at http://www.snopes2.com/music/songs/firerain.htm

when i first heard this song, about 5 months ago which was a little bit after september 11, i thought it sounded like it was written about the attack because i only heard the first verse. -- airplanes and the plans they made put an end to you. pretty stupid when found out this was a 60's song.

yeah...I think everyone really listened to this song after September 11th ("sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground). this song has always been a favorite of mine.

I hope they play this at my funeral.

Well one thing is true...the Flying Machine was an early James Taylor band and, yup, it didn't do so well.

Oh...turn up the bass if you have a good system. There's a double bass he uses really excellently and the bass alone will move you.

This song is just....awesome. I'm 14 but still a HUGE James Taylor fan. I went to see him in concert and this song came on. I started crying so hard. This song has some kind of affect on me, I don't get it but it does. Everytime I hear it, it makes me think. It's such a sad song but it also can make you feel really good. James Taylor is the one of the best songwriters I have ever heard. I love him soooooooooo much! Luv ya! ~*~Tessa~*~

I love this....I wasn't alive then, but I'm a huge fan of the 60s and this is one of the greatest. I heard it after Sept. 11 too. It just has sooo much meaning that it touches a part of everyone.

The part about the "sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground" could be something else. It's like your dreams or the machines to be made are still in pieces and must be put together to fly or so everything just comes together and your dreams come true and you fly away. The line before mentions about talking about things to come so I thought it fit pretty well. I hope this isn't one of those things where everyone else got it right off and I'm just now catching on.

I happened to hear a different story about this song: James was in rehab for awhile on drug abuse and he met this woman Suzanne whom he started a relationship with and eventually fell in love with, the doctors in the rehab centre decided that this relationship maybe be unproductive to their healing process and separated them and a day or so afterwards she killed herself bc he was the only thing really keeping her alive...thus the lines "Ive seen fire and ive seen rain, ive seen sunny days that i thought would never end, *ive seen lonely times when i could not find a friends, but i always thought that id see you again*"

Duff, the first IS about his girlfriend dying in a plane crash, but the song is a story of his life from his late teens through his early 20's. The first verse, which he wrote when he was about 18, is about how his girlfriend died in a plane crash, and he's grieving. The second verse is about his period of deep depression and he needed Jesus to lift his spirits. He had just come out of rehab and was looking down on his life. The third verse is about how he's becoming an adult, and realizes that life's getting tougher. "Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground" is a reference to his band that he was in in high school called The Flying Machine. After they graduated, they fell apart and his dreams of going huge were (temporarily) crushed. Looks like he doesn't have to worry about that anymore. I'm 14 and I've gotten a lot of my friends into James Taylor. You gotta introduce others to the true music.

You are all close, but VH1 behind the music had him giving the real meanings of the story. He was in a mental hospital for some kind of problem and while he was there, he met a girl named susanne. They were both patients in the mental hospital and they started to fall in love. The plans they made for you was when they gave susanne a libotomy, im not sure of the spelling, but its when they cut out a portion of ur brain to try and cure you, anyway, after the libotomy she wuz like a zombie, she had no emotions, she didnt remember poor james and he could never talk to her again...

Actually...its like this....Jimmy T was in a mental facility for over dose of herion and alcohol..there he did meet suzanne. she did die because of complications, but also patients at this hospital are not allowed to date, or even really interact sexually at all...
But its a true story, and a sad one. Glad to know he is happy now...! :)

Very interesting. I can't stand James Taylor, but I do love this song. I had always assumed that "the plans they made" were funeral arrangements; that, up until that point, he could still kid himself about seeing her again. The final arrangements put an end to her time in his life.
I definitely DON'T believe that a bunch of his friends flew her somewhere and she crashed. The link at the top of the page seems to explain it pretty well.

This song is about James' friend, Suzanne, who commited suicide. A lot of people think it is about a plane crash because of the line "sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground" but that is actually a reference to the break up of his band, Flying Machine. The opening line ("just yesterday mornin, they let me know you were gone") is stating the fact that he didn't find out until about 6 months after it had happened because he was away. There are also references to James' heroin use which was at its peak, like in the stanza that starts "Won't you look down upon me Jesus..." where he expresses the seriousness of his usage and the consequences of continuing on this path. This is a wonderful song and never ceases to make me teary-eyed.

I guess the VH1 story must be true, but I heard a slightly different version: James Taylor went to Cedars-Sinai to kick his heroin addiction, this is before he was famous, and that is where he met Susanne. She was there for pills or something, I'm not sure. Anyway, they fell in love but she soon left because the relationship was too tumultuous. So he woke up that morning and wrote down this song, to express his grief over her leaving, not because she had died. I heard this from a former lover of Susanne's, so I believe this to be true. She is still alive and she's a stunt actress in Hollywood, but very into metaphysics, holistic healing, etc.

The first time I this song really impacted me was when I heard it in the background of one of the "Stella Shorts." They'd just given their cat back to the owned, then it's about 5 minutes of the three men sitting down, looking gloomy with this song playing in the back. It's depressing.
