Lyrics for The World I Know as interpreted by Demau Senae

The World I Know Lyrics
Has our conscience shown?
Has the sweet breeze blown?
Has all the kindness gone?
Hope still lingers on.
I drink myself of newfound pity
Sitting alone in New York City
And I don't know why.

Are we listening
To hymns of offering?
Have we eyes to see
That love is gathering?
All the words that I've been reading
Have now started the act of bleeding
Into one.

So I walk up on high
And I step to the edge
To see my world below.
And I laugh at myself
As the tears roll down.
'Cause it's the world I know.
It's the world I know.

I think the song is about someone reflecting on their surroundings or just everyday life and society. The part when he "walked up on high" I think he stood at the edge of a building top either to jump off until he realized that this is the world he is used to and decided to live with it and love it, or he just stood up there for the natural high and to see the whole city before his eyes and how beautiful it really is. I really like the part where it says "All the words I've been reading have now started the act of bleeding into one" I think it's saying that all the things that have happened to him along the way are finally starting to make sense and the go together to help him out. All just my opinion.

Thanks Cornerstone for the riviting explaination. I feel so much better that you stated the obvious. Seriously, who the fuck hasn't watched the video before. We all know what it means. You just wasted minutes of your life telling people things they already know. Please, next time, save your comments until you come up with something witty that people will either laugh at or appreciate.

maybe this needs to be clarified:

music videos are NOT the meaning of the song, nor does the song define the music video. a music video is just one person's interpretation of what the song means to them. JUST ONE PERSON. in the millions of people who will listen to a song and interpret it millions of different ways, only one person is granted the power to push their vision onto you.

so just because you've seen the video before, newfoundfinch, it don't mean shit. perhaps it may be a good idea for you to practice your social skills and stop letting MTV do your thinking for you.

A few months ago I was as low as I have ever been. Everything in my life was going wrong. I decided that the only thing for me to do is to kill myself. I decided that I would jump off my appartment roof. Then I heard this song and the lyrics made me change my mind. To me this song is about some guy that was at his personal low, and when he was about to take the jump, he realized that he knows this world and so he changed his mind because the world isn't that bad after all.

This song had helped me out. I was in an abusive relationship and I knew that there was nothing that I could do to get out of it. I used to listen to this song and cry becuase my pathetic life was the world I knew. One day I was listening to this song with one of my good friends and he asked me to actually listen to this song. He told me that it was saying that I should look at my life and change it if I didn't like it.

This, I think, is one of Collective Soul's best songs. Alot of feeling in this song, and I think that the vid is appropriate for the lyrics.. however it IS true that alot of music vids don't accurately portray the song.

to me this song isnt really about depression, i think that the song is about someone who was once depressed has come to terms with themself, and they realize they must go on, and that no matter what life gives them, there's still always going to be another day another time to make things right

It's been a while since I came back to look at this page. I havent seen it since I left my post. Newfoundfinch you can lick my nuts. I was just trying to get tha ball rolling because there was no posts. The whole point of this site is to post the meanings of songs, songmeanings.net. Perhaps you aren't as good as seing the obvious as you thought you were. I may have just wasted several more minutes of my life but I kind of enjoyed it this time, asshole!

come on, you guys.. everyone has their own opinions. no need to be rude, just accept that other people have the right to say what they'd like and focus on the music. i'm really glad that this song helped tarvis and gnrfmyles; that's what music's all about.

FAVORITE PART:
so i walk up on high and i step to the edge to see my world below. and i laugh at myself as the tears roll down, cuz it's the world i know..

I think people should be thanking the people that made this song happen. If it wasnt for it, there would be 2 people gone... and probably more that arent here. The world isnt so bad as the song states..... just aslong as we have music.

Not all the songs are religious, such as this one. However, on the note of videos and their respective songs, the video may not even reflect the song in any way.

Anyway, compared to What's this Life For by Creed and Jumper by Third eye Blind, this is the only suicide-themed song from the the perspective of the person trying to kill himself. However, those are the only three suicide songs I know (in English at least).

Stuff I liked from the video: the blue tint that made the video so sad and gloomy, and how the lighting shifted into something brighter when the jumper changed his mind. Hope-inspiring imagery...

I don't know how you can say Collective Soul are religious in general... though perhaps I have a limited knowledge of their work; maybe they have more religious lyrics than I know.

Anyway, I can certainly understand how each person sees (or rather hears) what they need in a song, be it religious meaning or anything else.

Personally I just love this song for its honesty/realism in the face of harsh humanity. And I was lucky enough to catch the music video on TV the other day - beautiful! - it brought tears to my eyes. Simple but powerful symbols like the bird, as a reminder of hope.

The song is about depression and suicide. References to Jesus Christ (hope, hymns of offering, love gathering, words being read, act of bleeding into One, etc.).
