Lyrics for Road as interpreted by Sweet Blue Way

Road Lyrics
You can say the sun is shinning if you really want to
I can see the moon and it seems so clear
You can take the road that takes you to the stars now
I can take the road that'll see me through
I can take the road that'll see me through

You can take the road that takes you to the stars now
I can take the road that'll see me through
I can take the road that'll see me through
I can take the road that'll see me through

I posted something similar on the page for Place To Be, but it seems to count for all of this album. It's so hauntingly beautiful, this song, and every other on the Pink Moon album

My interpretation:

You see your cheery method of things
I'll take my way, it works for me. (angst, realist stuff)

- Love this song..

How do you know which road will see you through? Does anyone know?

I love this song so much, and everything else Nick wrote. I agree that it's a song about his acceptance, or devotion or whatever to his angst. I can completely understand what he means. It's not that he was necessarily depressed and angry about anything. It's just that this is how he saw the world for better or worse.

the first two lines in this song means to me, that everyone always seems to have the anwser to a bigger and better thing in life, but he knows the ending(death?) so he will take the road that he knows best b/c its simpler that way. wishing and hoping and grinding your way through life isn't a way to live...he may not know much more, but he knows that life to him isn't keeping your head in the clouds(stars?)

The other person sees what he wants to see and imagines everything is going to be ok, but Nick knows it isn't going to be like that.

I personally think this song is about finding your own path in life. I think he realizes that he is destined for a different way of life than the norm and thus knows he must take a different road to 'see him through.' This is one of my favorite Nick Drake songs and it is my own personal anthem.

the album pink moon shows a lot about Drake. It lays bare his weakness but also his strenght. I think this song is about the brave decision to be strong.

Given his history with depression, I would say that Drake is talking about how his view of the world differs from those that are "normal." He is acknowledging that they can take their own path because it works for them, but it will never work for him because of his condition.

People with depression many times are unable to go out a limb, take chances, etc. because they run the risk of shocking themselves. Sometimes they can't recover from such shocks. The path to the stars is the one that may be riskier but will have great rewards.

Drake was saying that he can't really shoot for the stars because he's just trying to get through each day.

agree with midnyteblu, young_team. two roads - two paths in life. one of disillusionment, idealism. the other of truth and reality.

This is a "shut up" to everyone else in Nick Drake's life in my opinion. He wanted his music to catch on in the public eye, and when his first two albums sold poorly he became depressed. He was probably tired of listening to the comforts of his friends, family, and musical peers. In the end, it's as simple as "I'll do things my way, and you do things yours. Stop trying to tell me how to live, feel, or act. I may actually enjoy my sad sack world more than you think". I could be wrong, but going off of the lyrics alone, I don't see how there could be any other interpretation.

As with most of Drake's work, he really has a theme that almost everyone seems to get in his songs. I mean, look at these comments, almost everyone's in agreement that this is contrasting perspectives in life. It is almsot realist vs. idealist, but I think it boils down to Nick commenting on people who try to help his morose, pensive mood. People can say "well it's all how you look at it" or "look on the bright side" as a fix to a bad mood. This is true in that our perspectives define our lives. However, it's just as hard to look at a bad situation in a good light as it is the other way around. I think Drake is highlighting that. He says, 'you say you can see the sun, but I say I can see the moon. If you think I should be able to see the sun, you try and see the moon.' It's almost beyond choice at that point. Its telling idealists that they're comments on changing perspective are just as hard for them, and that different things work for different people. The road is the real symbol of our paths in life. Drake plainly says, changing my path to meet yours will not change anything, my path will lead me to where I'm supposed to go. Changing paths is a naive piece of advice, trying to steer your path in a different direction is the real advice that should be given. Of course this stems into many existential discussions, but this is Drake's response to that happy-go-lucky, sugary advice to 'change how you look at life'. I can change how I look at the moon all I want, but I'll always see the moon.

i agree with what everyone else said, but i'd like to add that the first two lines are brilliant because they work as metapher and imagery at the same time. it's like when you hear the first line you think of someone who is really cheery but maybe a little superficial and at first you think the second line is the opposite, someone who is really depressed, but then you're hit with that image of the clear moon and it's like exhilarating and it kind of illustrates how things can be more intense and vivid, more beautiful, when you aren't in denial, but are open to all aspects of experience, even those that seem difficult or uncomfortable.
