i think it's about how his friends or someone close to him moved away, or how he moved away or something like that. the college thing could work too.
but yeah, he only gets to see and speak to them on holidays and he thinks he's lucky if he can atleast do that.
then when he sees them again they don't remember anything.
i think i'm wrong, but thats how i like to think of it.
also, "the words dont match the story that our actions show" makes me think of all the "ill miss you!"s and "lets hang during summer!"s that we all wrote in each others yearbooks, but we havent.
