Lyrics for Holiday as interpreted by oofus

Holiday Lyrics
What became of everyone I used to know?
Where did our respectable convictions go?
Your words don't match the story that your actions show, but what do I know?
I'm sure you can't help but remembering
I thought that you'd be one not to forget,
But remembering's not helping you yet.
Say goodnight means goodbye.
I know you thought my life would stop with you away
Maybe I can see you on the holidays,
But you're worlds away
I've never forgotten all our yesterdays but I'm lucky if we're speaking on the holidays
The evidence presents itself accusingly,
Your absence speaking everything you think of me
Now that I am faced with opportunity
You're not remembering
I'm not asking you anyway
Even if you ever could cave in
I wouldn't know where to begin

What does this song men to me?
I can't speak a perfect english. I think this song relates those situations were your good friends go away, and lied when you found them on a party or on the street. Noones ask them to lie you, but they do it anyway.
cool song

Being an emo band it's hard for me to think it's about anything other than a girl. Not to say it's bad, I freaking love this song.

I get a feeling of maybe his exgirlfriend went to college (she's in town for the holidays) and they do that empty shallow fake conversation that you do with people you don't know anymore. And the old days will eventually fade into the memory bank and life will go on....Except for The Get Up Kids. ;)

I remember all those promises you made about your life and us but you're not living up to them. "But what do I know?" I haven't forgoten our past and you just don't want to remember it, I thought you would be the one not to forget. Our last night you said goodnight but you meant goodbye and now you're gone and far away. But maybe we could see eachother on holidays (metephorically saying -you ignore me all the time now that we are apart but you could at least give me a fake "hi" and smile on holidays). You're avoiding me because you don't want to admit anything about the past, especially now that theres an opportunity. But even if you did "I wouldnt know where to begin."

emo doesn't mean the music is about a girl, it means it is about relationships, any kind of relationships, which include friendships, not just dating relationships.

but most songs ARe about girls. I think this one is about a girl. Who would say "I know you thought my life would stop with you away." about some guy. that just doesn't sound right. Its about a girl

i'm not sure why, but i seem to get the feeling that (for some unexplained reason) it might be about an adult or someone in the family that's leaving or something... like a father who runs out. but the song itself, if you disregaured the lyrics, sounds pretty upbeat to be a sad, tragic song!

i think this song is about a girl or a family member or friend who lied to him and maybe he won't be wanting to see him or her any day, only in christmas or something... it can also be about someone he loves that lives far away from him...

This song can talk about a relationship where one person feels that the other one will not live without the other one but little do they know that this not true.

this song is probably saying how he is finally seeing a friend or person he has grown so close to after a long period of time. he feels that the person might have forgotten about him and he doesnt know exactly what to say when they finally meet again. great song.

Let me just start off by saying that I absolutely adore the fact that nobody who has posted for this song has put anyone else down, regardless of differing opinions. This is the first song I heard from tguk, about a year and a half ago, and I instantly liked it.
To me, the line "say goodnight, means goodbye" is just great, it coins it perfectly. Have you ever known that, like, your relationship (or friendship, or just someone you were seeing, or whatever) was completely destroyed by some silly little fight? With a scowl you mumble "g'night" and go on your way... never talking to the person again until a special occasion of some sort arrises and you feel guilty and realize you miss them. You meekly ask, "Maybe we could get together, if you're not too busy?" yeah... this is real life stuff.

allright this song is like... desperate-ness dont get me wron its like really good desperate-ness its hard to explain everything in this song like every line has a figurative meaning. "say goodnight, means goodbye" its like when you say goodnight but it was a goodbye it was probably like a night they were together and he never hered from her agin. and she thinks his world stops when shes away its like if theyre both thinking of eachother, shes thinking of him missing her, hes yearning to speak with her, than just get it together allready okay no! you know what everyone this makes more sence to me: its like if he liked a cousin or someone in the family, i swear! read it it makes sence more sence than like whatever i was trying to say pshhh how dumb am i? but ya, thats your homework guys, read it and try to relate it to an in the family type thing

This is an excellent song and it means so much to me emotionally. It mainly reminded me of my brother. He's getting kicked out, moving away. And I'll remember all the yesterdays we've shared. We'll promise to keep in touch and whatnot, but when it all comes down to it, our relationship could never be the same as it is now. The fact of the matter is that he won't be here anymore, and we won't be the same. To me, it feels as if he could care less about leaving me, but I care so much about it. So it's like I'll probably see him on the holidays, but I wouldn't know how to tell him that I miss him because I just feel that he doesn't feel the same way and he wouldn't remember everything that I do. Sorry if this is confusing, too long, or jus' that it doesn't concern you... but that's my aspect of the song. It matches my brother's leaving. Cya.

Everytime that I hear this song it makes me think of how I am graduating and how my friends are leaving for college. When Matthew Pryor sings "but I'm lucky if we're speaking on the holidays." that makes me think that maybe how it will be when I see my friends on the Holidays.

this song is so real to me. i relate more with these songs than any other band around. i think this song just really sumarizes what it's like to care so much for someone and just feeling like they don't care one bit at all about you and your feelings. it reminds me of being with a really really selfish person who was in the relationship just for themselves...and how the other person is just hanging on their every word, yet so pissed off at the same time for being "toyed with emotionally"

Wow, I totally feel this song. Word for word this song sounds exactly like what I said to my exboyfriend the last time we spoke. He would alternate between pretending that nothing had happened between us and would not talk to me for weeks, and then talking to me for hours every day and guilt tripping me if I didnt call him. It was confusing and humiliating because if I tried to be with him or talk to him during the detached phase he treated me like a stranger right in front of everyone we knew; when he was in the possessive phase he adored me and acted like there was nothing in my life more important than being with him. The words remind me of our last conversation before I just cut him off entirely, when I became so angry and frustrated with his duplicity. We told each other goodnight and we both DEFINITELY knew that it really meant goodbye.
The song could definitely be about a friend or family member too though, I agree with everyone else on that.

DO the getup kids have more good songs like this? I can only listen to so many of those slow songs they have. This one is way better and still has good lyrics.

ok let me say this.....the record somthing to write home about is a collaboration of songs pertaining to distance....maybe distance that is obviouse or just suttle things he says...this is about a girl who left im in the middle of the night and he wakes up to no one...then he thinks of all the times hes been left or abandoned and why and what if she ends up coming back....what would he do or say.and what really makes him mad is that she put up a front that made him think she was happy.
