General Comment:I'd just like to point out that Mercedes Ruehl is an actress. Maybe she rented the Lear jet? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…

General Comment:I like the comments, and I think we've gotten to the heart of it. I've got one odd thought to toss out to the group here. There's a line in this song that I find odd - a little "breadcrumb" she's left for us to follow the trail to a little more meaning. I think the song is quite a personal one, and I believe it directly references her career/love-life. The line I'm focused on is "And I'm calling Buddy on the ouija board". As I recall, her breakthrough hit, "All I Wanna Do" had some lines in it about sitting in a bar drinking beer at noon on Tuesday with someone who might be named "Buddy" (even though he says his name is William"). Just an out-there theory on my part - but does that let us know this is autobiographical and that she's trying to reach back to her past - even though she realizes it's so far back, it may as well be dead (why else do you need a Ouija board to reach it)? Perhaps it's aimed at someone she dated in between the first two albums. Am I over-reaching?
BTW - I also think she uses the song as a multiple-meaning comment, directed towards some of the musicians from her first album that "turned" on her (see my comments under "Every Day is a Winding Road"). Perhaps one of them stayed in her life after the first record, but then revealed himself to be "unworthy". The message being "stop dragging me down, and make a change in your own life - get over what happened and stop being so full of yourself". Again - perhaps reading too much in, but an interesting angle, nonetheless.

General Comment:I've been thinking 'bout catching a train
Leave my phone machine by the radar range
Hello it's me, I'm not at home
If you'd like to reach me, leave me alone

I think that this says, she's leaving, she'll be looking to if there are any calls to her from this guy she's leaving. If he calls pesteringly, then she'll know he's not changed; if he doesn't call (leaves alone) then she'll actually be reached in a meaningful way because he's allowing her to have her change, and giving himself the credibility that he may have changed too.

I don't know that she's saying he'd get another chance that way or not though; but he'd definitely make an impression if he leaves her alone since she's showing signals that's what she needs that he's changed, that he couldn't make to her if he calls.

My Interpretation:Sound like this girl has been with a rock star for 10 years, remembering when she met him--that he appeared, or actually was, rich, but in the end was not sincere, a bottom feeder, low rent. And as most rock stars do, they end up with fashion models. She was a looker, young, pretty, daddy's jewel.

He's gotten older. And, all the while she thought he was singing his heart out to her, but he was lip syncing, i.e., lying. Years later she now sees him for what he truly is--a jerk--and she wants out, a change. He wants to have dinner and she thinks, 'sure--wear your cement shoes'so she can drop him in the river where he sinks to the bottom. Or if he calls, leave a message, she won't be around to hear it or either don't call anymore; leave her alone. She's telling him a change will do him good, but in essence, the change is good for her.

General Comment:I think Beebz's interpretation kicks ass! If anything, the whole song is about things that go wrong in relationships and how she doesn't want any part of it.

General Comment:This song has a Beck-like appeal to its lyrics, even though Beebz has found some meaning to them.

General Comment:Contrary to popular belief, "A Change" is the complete title. Get the album if you don't believe me.

General Comment:What beebz said make so much sense.
At first I just thought the song was a bunch of random lines that probably only had meaning to her, but now i see it kinda does tell a story.
I still don't get every line but i certainly think i get the gist of it.
