Ten years living in a paper bag
Feedback baby, he's a flipped out cat
He's a platinum canary, drinkin' Falstaff beer
Mercedes rule and a rented Lear
Bottom feeder insincere
Prophet lo-fi pioneer
Sell the house and go to school
Get a young girlfriend, daddy's jewel
A change
(A change would do you good)
Would do you good
(A change would do you good)
I think a change
(A change would do you good)
Would do you good
(A change would do you good)
God's little gift is on the rag
Poster girl posing in a fashion mag
Canine, feline, Jekyll and Hyde?
Wear your fake fur on the inside
Queen of south beach, aging blues
Dinners at six, wear your cement shoes
I thought you were syncing your heart out to me
Your lips were syncing and now I see
A change
(A change would do you good)
Would do you good
(A change would do you good)
I think a change
(A change would do you good)
Would do you good
(A change would do you good)
A change
(A change would do you good)
Would do you good
(A change would do you good)
I think a change
(A change would do you good)
Would do you good
(A change would do you good)
Chasing dragons with plastic swords
Jack off Jimmy everybody wants more
Scully and angel on the kitchen floor
And I'm calling Buddy on the Ouija board
I've been thinking 'bout catching a train
Leave my phone machine by the radar range
"Hello it's me, I'm not at home
If you'd like to reach me, leave me alone"
I think a change
(A change would do you good)
Would do you good
(A change would do you good)
"Hello it's me, I'm not at home
If you'd like to reach me, leave me alone"
I think a change
(A change would do you good)
Would do you good
(A change would do you good)
I think a change
(A change would do you good)
Would do you good
(A change would do you good)
Oh, I think a change
(A change would do you good)
Would do you good
(A change would do you good)
Oh, I think a change
(A change would do you good)
Would do you good
(A change would do you good)
Oh, a change
(A change would do you good)
Would do you good
(A change would do you good)

BTW - I also think she uses the song as a multiple-meaning comment, directed towards some of the musicians from her first album that "turned" on her (see my comments under "Every Day is a Winding Road"). Perhaps one of them stayed in her life after the first record, but then revealed himself to be "unworthy". The message being "stop dragging me down, and make a change in your own life - get over what happened and stop being so full of yourself". Again - perhaps reading too much in, but an interesting angle, nonetheless.
Leave my phone machine by the radar range
Hello it's me, I'm not at home
If you'd like to reach me, leave me alone
I think that this says, she's leaving, she'll be looking to if there are any calls to her from this guy she's leaving. If he calls pesteringly, then she'll know he's not changed; if he doesn't call (leaves alone) then she'll actually be reached in a meaningful way because he's allowing her to have her change, and giving himself the credibility that he may have changed too.
I don't know that she's saying he'd get another chance that way or not though; but he'd definitely make an impression if he leaves her alone since she's showing signals that's what she needs that he's changed, that he couldn't make to her if he calls.
He's gotten older. And, all the while she thought he was singing his heart out to her, but he was lip syncing, i.e., lying. Years later she now sees him for what he truly is--a jerk--and she wants out, a change. He wants to have dinner and she thinks, 'sure--wear your cement shoes'so she can drop him in the river where he sinks to the bottom. Or if he calls, leave a message, she won't be around to hear it or either don't call anymore; leave her alone. She's telling him a change will do him good, but in essence, the change is good for her.
"The Very Best of Sheryl Crow" Song 13: "A Change Would Do You good" 3:50
At first I just thought the song was a bunch of random lines that probably only had meaning to her, but now i see it kinda does tell a story.
I still don't get every line but i certainly think i get the gist of it.
