Feel it closing in,
Feel it closing in,
The fear of whom I call,
Every time I call,
I feel it closing in,
I feel it closing in,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out.

I feel it closing in,
As patterns seem to form.
I feel it cold and warm.
The shadows start to fall.
I feel it closing in,
I feel it closing in,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out,
Day in, day out.

I'd have the world around,
To see just whatever happens,
Stood by the door alone,
And then it's fade away.
I see you fade away.
Don't ever fade away.
I need you here today.
Don't ever fade away.
Don't ever fade away.
Don't ever fade away.
Don't ever fade away.
Fade away. Fade away.
Fade away. Fade away.
Fade away. Fade away.
Fade away.

General Comment:this has been addressed in the joy division documentry. ian curtis was very bipolar. digital refers to the idea of digital (on, off, on, off...day in, day out, day in, day out.) "feel it closing in" refers to the axiety and depression of a bipalr low.

    "As patterns seem to form
I feel it cold and warm
    The shadows start to fall"

again referring to depression. what's even more curious about curtis was his bipolar highs brought about his on stage seizures. do some research about biploraity and manic episodes, then watch curtis perform on stage. its pretty cut and dry from that point.

General Comment:Can I start by having a bit of a rant?

Can people stop slandering people for relating this song to suicide and epilepsy? It's not difficult to see how they'd come to such a conclusion and if you don’t have a better idea on what the song means then I’d suggest you be quite to avoid looking arrogant and closed minded. It was suggested somewhere (and I believe it to be true) that this (as well as a lot of the songs on unknown pleasures) are Curtis' social commentary on the working industrial state he found himself drowning in. Childish dreams for all of us slowly close in until we loose all hope of them coming true, I think Curtis was talking about that hope when he said "don't ever fade away" but then, we can't exactly ask him now can we...

You’re more than welcome to point out my flaws as long as you’ve got a counter-argument.

General Comment:I'm not sure if Ian Curtis was diagnoses bipolar, but i know his wife thought he sort-of was.

It really does fuck me off that people continue to shout 'suicide' and 'epilepsy' at every Joy Division song. Curtis was epileptic untli after this song was written (and recorded i think) and he wasn't in a particularly bad frame of mind either if accounts are to be believed.

I've always considered it ot be about paranoia, but I confess I don't really know what it's about. Except that it's not about epilepsy.

General Comment:in my opinion..this song is about being scared of death.
Day in, day out, living through the days knowing that you're going to die, and not wanting to.

General Comment:to me this song will always be about suicide. the whole "feel it closing in" is about how everything is just collapsing in, depression, loneliness, just all these uncontrollable feelings, 'til you can't see any possible way out. and it's just happening every day.

    "Don't ever fade away
    Fade away. Fade away
    Fade away. Fade away
    Fade away. Fade away
Fade away." this kinda makes me think about isolation, someone isolating themselves until they begin to 'fade away', and then eventually, well, die.

but i guess that's a kinda depressing way of looking at it.

General Comment:what originally drew me to this song was its beat, just picturing myself walking in tune with the drums and then beating up some punk with this song as my soundtrack, but whoah. i had no idea about its association with his death. now it means much more to me.

General Comment:God im sick of people saying every joy division song is about epilepsy! This song was written long before ian was even diagnosed, it was an early song. I dont think it was till like half way through the unknown pleasures tour that he was diagnosed. I actually dont know what this songs about, its a great song but its never seemed one to really read into for me But its certainly NOT about epilepsy!

    General Comment:"Feel it closing in
    Feel it closing in
The fear of whom I call
Every time I call" - and doesn't it refer to Curtis' job before he got 100% committed for the band. from what i know after watching "Control", he worked in an employment centre and his job was pretty boring and he didn't really like it
