Lyrics for Every Breath You Take as interpreted by Demau Senae

Every Breath You Take Lyrics
Every breath you take
Every move you make
Every bond you break
Every step you take

I'll be watching you

Every single day
Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay

I'll be watching you

O can't you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake

I'll be watching you

Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep on crying baby, baby please

O can't you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches
With every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake

I'll be watching you

Every move you make
Every step you take

I'll be watching you

I'll be watching you

I'll be watching you

I'll be watching you

{begin fade out}

I'll be watching you

I'll be watching you

I'll be watching you

I'll be watching you

I'll be watching you

On Pop up Video this video was playing and it said that it was about one of Sting's exes who stalked him after they broke up

I'm pretty sure that this song is about the situation in George Orwell's 1984 under the disguise of a creepy love song.

No matter what Sting says there is still a squad of cheerleaders behind him...

"Give me an S"
"Give me an T"
"Give me an A"
"Give me an L"
"Give me an K"
"Give me an E"
"Give me an R"
"YAY STALKER!"

This is often claimed to be about stalking.

I don't think it literally about stalking, rather it is about obsession with someone, in this case most likely an ex-wife due to the "vows you break" line.

The police had a way with writing creepy, double meaning songs that made you go like: "what if it's actually a stalker and not ____________!" (cold war, parents...) Angels and Airwaves saw this trait and copied it in their song "sirens"...

I'm not buying the whole 'government' thing.
It's about a stalker, I believe.
A lot of The Police' songs are creepy.

it's a little stalkerish, but I see it more as a man who knows his partner is cheating on him, but is still so in love. or it could be an ended relationship, and while he is still longing for her, she's moved on to a new guy.

"You belong to me."

how can that not be creepy? that's not love; it's what someone says before they beat, kill or maim whatever they consider their property has stepped out of line?

One of the greatest songs ever written - to me it's about when love is too obsessive for a lover's own good, but they just can't help themselves.

i can definitely see it being about the cold war.... the government was overly paranoid and watching us all... i see it the other way too... a songs lyrics are determined by you and only you. if you can see it a certain way, then thats part of the many things the song may be about.

this song is about losing the person you love...

Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face

... every step apart is breaking his heart...

How my poor heart aches
With every step you take

... they are still 'together' and the person is having an affair. the cheating, the lies told, and fake-ness of the way they pretend every thing is normal - it makes him realize he could lose the person he loves and took for granted, to someone else...

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake

... but he can't let happen.

i'll be watching you.

he knows they were made for each other, to be together, and needs her to see that, too...

O can't you see
You belong to me.

...it's song about being scared and jealous and in love.

Its not about a stalker. its about you raising a child and watching it grow up (EVery breth you take, every move you make) And the "Since youve been gone ect. That is his child going off into the world and he just misses him. but no matter whta happens he'll be there for him.

The thing is, this really isn't a love song. The singer describes the his target as a faithless manipulative liar. He used to love her, but there's a lot of hatred and borderline-craziness there, now.

Since there seems to be disagreement on what Sting said about this song, I'll give take based on the lyrics.

While there is a stalking element to the song, i see it more like "obsesses in love and sorrow" more than someone who physically stalks, waiting outside ones bedroom window and such. It sounds to me like the narrator feels so much sadness over the person leaving that he's starting to lose it. He probably does follow her on occasion (though not in a criminal sort of way, more like waiting on the subway platform to get a look at her on her way to work). He still thinks they are meant to be, and therefore he sees her as still belonging to him. It doesn't sound like he's going to murder her or anything, rather he's just going insane out of sadness. The bridge "since you've gone I've been lost without a trace..." shows he acts out of love and not vengeance. I think it’s meant to show obsession, but not malevolence. I think he’s watching her every step in his mind, not literally.

Boy can I relate...

i've heard he wrote this song to his ex-wife after they got a divorce.
i'm not sure of the accuracy of that statement, but i heard it from a reliable source. (my dad, the police was his time. lol. and he knows his stuff.)
but it would also make sense to be written about the cold wars or paparazzi as other people said.
i hope it is.
cause of not, sting is a serious stalker!

Personally, i think the girl broke up with him, and he believes they should still be together. Maybe he's jealous of her new boyfriend too, but either way, he keeps watching her every move 'cause he's somewhat obsessed with her. :-) Brilliant song!

Yes. I mean the person in the song is literally talking about their own self. Someone's self-conscious constantly bearing witness to what that person is doing, commenting on it, and not particularly happy with what they see they have become.

You know, it's funny... Over the years I think I can remember Sting mentioning or eluding to several of the above theories as being either the meaning or inspiration for "Every Breath You Take." I don't know if he enjoys people not knowing with certainty what the single and correct meaning is, or, perhaps, if his inspiration(s) were so vague or general at the time that, even to him, it has meant different things at different times. Under particular circumstances people are capable of mistaking or even exploiting their own authorial intent (*M*A*S*H*, Apocalypse Now, Vonnegut's "Slaughterhouse Five," are good examples of inspirations, messages and even the particular war being depicted, morphing over time to fulfill some over-reaching agenda. All the interpretations were correct, even when none of them were "correct".)

Anyways... I have always found a writer's inspiration/meaning interesting, even if the work, to me, means something entirely different. To me, the two are not mutually exclusive. Personally, I like to believe that "Every Breath You Take" is about the duality of an individual. There is a part of us that is separate from our actions, changing beliefs/attitudes and motivations. The part of an alcoholic that regrets his or her drinking, even as the bottle is up to their lips. The part of us that tries to coax one foot in front of the other when overcoming or succumbing to our fear, or that serves as the vehicle of nostalgia for prior youth or love. I like to think that this part of us is the voice in the song, sung by a man who has fallen out of his own good graces. Think about it while you listen and see if it does anything for you. I'm sorry for the length. My first post, and I went a little overboard.

i watched an interview with the members of the police and one of the memebers said that Sting was really good at writing songs that sounded like one thing but actually meant something else, so this sounds like a love song but really, it's about stalking.
