Every breath you take and every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take, I'll be watching you
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay, I'll be watching you

Oh, can't you see you belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take

Every move you make, every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I'll be watching you

Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying, "Baby, baby, please"

Oh, can't you see you belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take

Every move you make and every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I'll be watching you
Every move you make, every step you take, I'll be watching you

I'll be watching you
Every breath you take and every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take (I'll be watching you)
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay (I'll be watching you)
Every move you make, every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake (I'll be watching you)
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay (I'll be watching you)

Every breath you take and every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take (I'll be watching you)
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay (I'll be watching you)
Every move you make, every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake (I'll be watching you)
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay (I'll be watching you)

General Comment:Some people need to stop, please. If you don't wanna be in someone's physical life than you have no say in anything s/he does.

My Interpretation:reading through the lyrics i get this out of it.

So sting is a kidnapper and he kidnapped this beautiful girl who he fell in love and wanted to keep her as his sex slave, but then she got out and now he's stalker her cause he misses her and wants her back

General Comment:“This is one of the most misinterpreted songs ever. It is about an obsessive stalker, but it sounds like a love song. Some people even used it as their wedding song. The Police frontman Sting wrote it after separating from his first wife, Frances Tomelty.
In a 1983 interview with the New Musical Express, Sting explained: ‘I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership.’ Regarding the common misinterpretation of the song, he added: ‘I think the ambiguity is intrinsic in the song however you treat it because the words are so sadistic. On one level, it's a nice long song with the classic relative minor chords, and underneath there's this distasteful character talking about watching every move. I enjoy that ambiguity. I watched Andy Gibb singing it with some girl on TV a couple of weeks ago, very loving, and totally misinterpreting it. (Laughter) I could still hear the words, which aren't about love at all. I pissed myself laughing.’”

“Sting wrote this at the same desk in Jamaica where Ian Fleming wrote his James Bond novels.”

At times this song is linked to Sting’s divorce from Fran, asking others to perhaps conclude that he felt possessive of her and he planned to keep an eye on her every move. It seems an odd thing for a man leaving his wife to think of doing, no matter how much he was enraptured with her. He was leaving. It may have been strange for Trudie to read these suppositions because what was she to think? He’s coming away with me but he’ll also be rabidly devoted to her? Frankly, if this had been the case and I was Trudie, I would have said, sweet package, but I think I’ll pass until he gets his head together. How can I be leaving with some guy who wants to stalk another woman?

[Sting]”Following my awful separation from my wife actress Frances Tomelty in the early '80s, I went to Jamaica to escape, and I stayed at Golden Eye, the old lan Fleming house in Oracabessa that Chris Blackwell of Island owns. While I was there, I sat at Fleming's old wooden desk overlooking the ocean, the one at which he wrote all his James Bond books, and I wrote 'Every Breath You Take', 'King Of Pain', 'Wrapped Around Your Finger', all these neat songs.”

Instead I don’t think the song had anything to do with Fran or Trudie but instead appealed to the imaginative side of Sting back in 1982; that part of him that delighted in playing the villain and rogue. The part of him that mentioned the role of Voldemort would be plum. Perhaps the stress of having to choose between two exceptional ladies crescendo-ed into a creative spurt that resulted in the songs he wrote on that trip to Jamaica. I can’t think that too many songwriters are inspired by living a life that 50’s parents Ward and June Cleaver might have enjoyed. Perhaps his muse just woke him up and said jot this song down. It’s certain to be a hit. I’m smiling. Well, Sting did say he knew it was going to be a hit. So the song is about possession. Spirits, I would surmise, can be multi-faceted and I reckon they know a top 40 hit when they spot one.

General Comment:I am disputing it's a ong about being possessive of something that wants to be free.
But in the same breath(lol no pun intended),some people like that. It makes them wanted
    and loved...

General Comment:Who cares what it's about, honestly? The music is great.

Stalkerish/creepy are pop words for shallow, vapid cunts to describe dudes they're personally not attracted to. Thanks to those little girls, these words have lost any real value for me unless I ever witness an actual stalking and not some petty bullshit.

One girl commenting here could overlook her "HOT" boyfriend's supposed "creepiness" because he sang a fucking song, regardless of the fact that she willingly chose to be in a relationship with him and he most likely hasn't ever ripped off a total stranger's clothes after following her home from work to fuck her savagely in the ass against her will. lol? Regardless of the fact that 95% of the dudes branded with these terms have never done that either and (I'd like to HOPE) a vast majority of them whom wouldn't do it even under the guise of anonmity, due to having a conscience or whatever.

Besides that, interpret however you want if that's your will. Sting's not going to give two fucks, either way.

My Interpretation:It does sound kinda stalkerish to me, but i went to wiki and read what sting was putting into the lyrics, but for me it also has a diffrent meaning. me and my boy friend had a huge bump in the road and we both made promises to each other so we would never fight like we had every again. this song makes me think of him and that he is making sure im keeping my promises.

General Comment:Oh God, here we go again, the "stalker" interpretation. It is not at all about a literal stalker scenario. Its about the way that someone can obssess about someone (as in not set them free.. per the other song...) but is only able to create a prison for them in the process. On the one hand worshipping and idolizing them, on the other driving them the other way by being so damned afraid to lose them. The result is that this person will inevitable start to imprison the other person and drive them away. Later he will find that he has imprisoned himself in his own obssession, keeping himself away from what he loves (and she will set herself free, whether he loves her or not... :P) Then at that point he MAY begin stalking her, should that be the next thing his obssession leads to. It's more about the essence than the form, but naturally the preponderant masses will always drag something down to the most knuckle dragging concretion of imagination possible. The video was a big adjunct to the song, and really gives an aethetic that has more to do with the psyche of an obssessive than of a stalker per se.

General Comment:The song's about someone watching someone/something else and getting lost the inflection point of losing it (or seems to be losing it)

It doesn't matter to whom of these he wrote it for, you can relate it to the one you're most fond of, you can even relate to losing a player of the team where you're the coach, but it could definetely be written about these three:

    A parent to a child
    Himself/someone to a girl
    Stalker thoughts

General Comment:i definately think its not too much stalking but he's checking on her. i have an ex-girlfriend who i really cared about and when we broke up all i wanted to do was protect and love her. and the part:
Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
    I look around but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep on crying baby, baby please

I felt that same way after the break up. Look at it this way:you havent got her so a part of you leaves. without a trace. like if noone knows what happened you happiness goes without a trace of it left. you dream about her still wishing for her embrace. you cry cause what was loved is gone... i listened to it all last night and it made me think so much of my ex. I think Sting realized tht it would seem stalkerish. but he wanted everyone to know tht he cared for this girl and when she left he wanted her back so he checked on her. he also could have been jealous: every night you stay. she's got a new boyfriend.

Song Meaning:It's weird that no one's referenced this one yet. Maybe I skipped a post somewhere. Anyway:

"I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn't realise at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control." - Sting
