I can't afford to breathe in this town
Nowhere to sit without a gun in my hand
Look back up to the cathode ray
I'm better off dead
I'm better off dead
I'm better off
Prove yourself
Prove yourself
Prove yourself
I want to breathe, I want to grow
I'd say I want it but I don't know how
I work, I bleed, I beg, I pray
I'm better off dead
I'm better off dead
I'm better off
Prove yourself
Prove yourself
Prove yourself
I'm better off dead
I'm better off dead
I'm better off
Prove yourself
Nowhere to sit without a gun in my hand
Look back up to the cathode ray
I'm better off dead
I'm better off dead
I'm better off
Prove yourself
Prove yourself
Prove yourself
I want to breathe, I want to grow
I'd say I want it but I don't know how
I work, I bleed, I beg, I pray
I'm better off dead
I'm better off dead
I'm better off
Prove yourself
Prove yourself
Prove yourself
I'm better off dead
I'm better off dead
I'm better off
Prove yourself

The expectation that is thrust upon you by your peers, when you are at a major crossroads in your life (so many important decisions that you have to make) The expectation that you are going to know which decisions are the right ones, and all the while those very same peers are pushing you for answers and decisions.
Its about frustration, indecision, pressure, that leads ultimately to the thought of just finishing it all
my only complaint is that the verses sound a lit like Heart of Gold by Neil Young, an influence of Thom's.
And, oh yeah-- on the radiohead myspace it did say he worked as an orderly in a mental hospital...that could have inspired a lot of his writing. Must have been a pretty scary, harsh job, I'd imagine.
...we're all trying to prove ourselves...
but in the end he cant do it, so he just watches tv (hooked back up to the cathode ray)
then later he feels that he has to do something with his life, "wanna breathe, wanna grow" instead of watching tv...
and he realises he has to prove to himself that he can do the things he wants to do, instead of sinking into depression and spending the whole day watching the "cathode ray" (TV)....
