So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
Nibblin' on spongecake
Watchin' the sun bake
All of those tourists covered with oil
Strummin' my six-string
On my front porch swing
Smell those shrimp, they're beginning to boil
Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
But I know it's nobody's fault
Don't know the reason
I stayed here all season
With nothing to show but this brand new tattoo
But it's a real beauty
A Mexican cutie
How it got here, I haven't a clue
Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
Now I think, hell it could be my fault
I blew out my flip-flop
Stepped on a pop top
Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home
But there's booze in the blender
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on
Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt, salt, salt, salt
Yes it's, Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
But I know it's my own damn fault
Yes, and some people claim that there's a woman to blame
And I know it's my own damn fault
Watchin' the sun bake
All of those tourists covered with oil
Strummin' my six-string
On my front porch swing
Smell those shrimp, they're beginning to boil
Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt

He's been drinking so much so that he has a tattoo that he doesn't recall getting. He's not relaxing because of a woman. He's just chillin'for the heck of it. This is one of those songs that makes you wanna party on a beach from dusk till dawn.
Fuck yes. On a secluded beach? Sounds magnificent.
No personal comments from me; the tech guy from this site is in the process of troubleshooting my messaging problem. As for the song, he sounds alone...probably too drunk to be entertaining women :(
That was not personal. I was speaking in general.
OK. Cant really cover those tracks. lol. Might as well go out with a snap, crackle, and a pop.
LOL. I don't think "Fuck yes. On a secluded beach? Sounds magnificent" had anything to do with the lyrics. But good try, though:)
What? What does cereal have to do with the song. I am so confused.
Here's some Buffet trivia; He attended Auburn University where he learned to play guitar then attended Pearl River Community College. Next he was off to The University of Southern Mississippi. (He graduated in 1969.) And he was initiated into the Kappa Sigma fraternity, where he probably drank lots of margaritas:)
Or are you confuzzed? lol. It has nothing to do with the song, it just sounded better than saying...'go out with a bang.' Since im gonna get kicked off this site....going out with a Snap crackle and pop is WAY more fun. That's all.
It's so difficult to create another username that you must be shaking in your Underoos:)
Obviously I'm terrified. :) And, Im not wearing underwear.
Joking. They're actually super cute. ;)
You're doing it again. Stop it.
Oh yeah, vague. oopsie. They're pink with itty bitty blue sparrows and anchors on them; Jerry The Sailor style. I have a bra that matches. Super sexy.
Yes, Bella, you need a bra for those very large boobies of yours. And I have that Miss America plaque on my wall. No, what you were doing 'again" was providing visuals.
Sweetass. :) Visuals are good. I was serious.
Nope...sad
That's the difference between you and I. I see no reason for it to be sad. Its all yours when youre ready. Anyways...mornin' comes early, sleep well.
Comes early..soon...whatever. ;) lol. Night.
I can't believe you just said that when you know it's not true. It's February, and the month is speaking, not you. Let's drop it, please.
The month is not speaking and I see no need for you to be hurt by anything I said. Sleep well.
Enjoy your night on the town. I have no plans to head to bed at this time.
Sorry. I do. Ninight, Sweetcheeks.
Once again I have a plaque on my wall ;)
