Nibblin' on spongecake
Watchin' the sun bake
All of those tourists covered with oil
Strummin' my six-string
On my front porch swing
Smell those shrimp, they're beginning to boil
Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
But I know it's nobody's fault
Don't know the reason
I stayed here all season
With nothing to show but this brand new tattoo
But it's a real beauty
A Mexican cutie
How it got here, I haven't a clue
Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
Now I think, hell it could be my fault
I blew out my flip-flop
Stepped on a pop top
Cut my heel, had to cruise on back home
But there's booze in the blender
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on
Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt, salt, salt, salt
Yes it's, Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
But I know it's my own damn fault
Yes, and some people claim that there's a woman to blame
And I know it's my own damn fault
Watchin' the sun bake
All of those tourists covered with oil
Strummin' my six-string
On my front porch swing
Smell those shrimp, they're beginning to boil
Wastin’ away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt

I agree that this, in essence, is a sad song. This song is about some dude who ran away from whatever problems he had. He's "wasting away" drinking himself into a stupor and doesn't even remember anything. How can everyone say it's happy just because the way it sounds may invoke happiness to you? Give me a break.
"That frozen concoction that helps me hang on." He doesn't know how to get by without being drunk anymore to try to run away from whatever's troubling him. And though he says there's no woman to blame for his current state, there obviously is, since he's saying it's his own fault that whatever it was didn't work out. Is he blaming himself? Who knows?
You people need to get over the hippy mentality that this song is about a vacation. A permanent one, maybe, where your entire life turns to crap.
