Lyrics for Never Let Me Down Again as interpreted by gasmask

Never Let Me Down Again Lyrics
I'm taking a ride
With my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
He knows where he's taking me
Taking me where I want to be
I'm taking a ride
With my best friend

We're flying high
We're watching the world pass us by
Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down
On the ground

I'm taking a ride
With my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
Promises me I'm as safe as houses
As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers
I hope he never lets me down again

Never let me down

See the stars they're shining bright
Everything's alright tonight

"As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers "

It seems like the main character in song is struggling for the control. Who has the control? Is the main character in the song or his "best friend?" I think the "best friend" is a drug.

I think this song sounds like it could be a song that Gore wrote to Gahan.

When I think about it, I see david wrapped up and lost in drugs and gahan similar but in not such a bad state. I think Gore knew that Depeche Mode was going to be huge and was becoming bigger than their wildest dreams and that Gahan would ruin it all with his drug usage. In my mind, he posed this to Gahan and Gahan like all drug addicts probably stated that it'd never happen again, because he knows how important his band is to him.

So when he says:

I'm taking a ride with my best friend -
I get:
I'm taking a ride to the top with my best friend and my bandmate,

I hope he never lets me down again:
I hope he doesn't fuck it all up by doing something stupid like o.ding or, quitting the group, being a stupid idiot and ruining our dreams,

He knows where he's taking me:
He knows how big we're getting and that we're about to explode as a band

Taking me where I wanna be:
Taking the band to the top (lead singer, awesome voice)

We're flying high
We're watching the world pass us by:
We're doing things that are beyond our wildest dreams

Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down
On the ground:
Don't wanna be stopped because we're too fucked to kick our habits

I hope he never lets me down again
Promises me I'm as safe as houses:
Promises he won't do it again.

As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers:
Trust him because he's in charge, he's the lead singer and knows how important work, the band, etc. are.

I hope he never lets me down again:
doesn't really trust Gahan but will go along with it anyway because they're best friends.

But that's just my cracked out ears hearing what they wanna hear. lol :P

In the book "Stripped" Martin said that there was a lot of extasy arund them in the Violator era and he was propably the worst during that time. So I think that whole "Martin was clean" thing is simply BS ;) Read the J. Miller's book- it says a lot about DM and drugs.

I thought originally, when this song was released during my adolescence, that it was sung by a codependent lover. These days, the drug references are more glaringly obvious. There are very few songs that can be taken either way, not to mention still sounding this good.

"

Another submissive expression, (see "master and servant," ect.) but this time sung to a drug not a lover. "He knows where he's taking me" implies that the drug is in control, he's surrendered to it, drug abuse as total power exchange with a chemical, a chilling and potent metaphor.

this song makes me want to commit suicide, to go to a world of peace.

its the first verse:

I'm taking a ride
With my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
He knows where he's taking me
Taking me where I want to be
I'm taking a ride
With my best friend

Like many have said, the song refers to heroin use. The music videos offers clues to this.

It starts out with Dave and an old man are sitting behind a tea set. As soon as Dave takes a sip, you see a car turn on inside a garage and slowly amble into a vast, barren field. The other DM members are present but distant and watch as the car starts to drive. The next clip is of Dave and the old man running through the field, the car is speeding down the road, Dave is jumping and everything picks up momentum, and then you see a quickly panning shot of Dave serenely lying on his back... The grass in the field sways, and Dave is standing with his arms stretched out like he's invincible. Then the car door opens and it's stopped in the field, and the other DM guys are carrying Dave, who seems dazed and can't walk, out of the field. You see a DM member walk up to the car like he's trying to check on the person inside. The car shuts off and everything is bleak and dark, Dave is stumbling on the edge of the field as he sings, "Never let me down." He begins to sway in the grass and falls backward; then you see his friends carrying him again, and finally he stumbles and falls to the ground in the dark.

Pretty much a heroin high.

As far as lyrics go, I think the most obvious lines are "We're flying high / We're watching the world pass us by / Never want to come down / Never want to put my feet back down on the ground." Heroin makes time seem to stop; the world is passing him by as he's suspended in some warm, euphoric cocoon, detached from everything around him.

"The stars are bright tonight / Everything's alright tonight" because everything's fine when you're f***ed up.

I'm almost sure that this song is about drug addiction. The "flying high" and "wearing the trousers" parts seem like dead giveaways.

My question: does it matter? Friends/drugs? For Chrissakes, isn't it the same vibe behind it whichever? Don't let him down, dammit.

Okay, seriously. People are being insane on this, which makes the comments entertaining to read and all, but, please.

And answer me this: what on earth do TROUSERS have to do with drugs?

For me, there are two interpretations to this song. One is the obvious drug reference, which makes a lot of sense through the contents and imagery. The other, and I'm surprised no one has actually spelled it out so far (a few ppl did hint at this but very vaguely) is the very obvious BDSM references. I’m surprised because DM have such an orientation towards this subject (Master and Servants, Behind the Wheel, and many more) - how come no one mentioned it here earlier?
I find the lyrics can make sense talking about a BDSM session or relationship: The “friend” in control, taking his sub to where he wants/needs to be. Also the euphoric feeling can of course relate to the famous state called “sub space”, which is supposed to be very similar to a drug high. Since this sort of power exchange demands a very high level of trust (when you surrender yourself into the hands of another), being let down by the trusted Dominant can be a very painful experience, and you sure would hope that he doesn’t let you down again this time, on this ride you’re taking with him.
And then there’s the line about being safe as houses, as long as you remember who’s in control…That’s pretty obvious and quite a few ppl mentioned that line as to do with control and power exchange.
I like both interpretations a lot, even though I do admit the BDSM one is a bit of a stretch…Still thought it was worth mentioning, just to play with the idea *smiles*
I'd love to hear what ppl think about this one!

I understand the drug interpretation, though the first time I heard it was here...though I suppose that's only because I'd never looked for an interpretation at all before. I just turned the song on a minute ago and suddenly thought...masturbation. His best friend is...his penis. But that was just a mere stab at it. The drugs explanation makes plenty more sense.

Don't stone me. I just put down what popped into my head! And no, I'm not one of those people who always makes songs about sex, just to tell you.

Many of you may be incorrect in your interpretation because you may be using unproven autobiographical statements, and drawn to heavily on the authors life in connection with the authors work. The life and the work are not necessarily the same. Instead, use textual evidents to interpret the meaning of the song in oppositon to historical or autobiographical assumptions. If you must interpret using historical or autobiographical insight, please make sure the facts are actually facts. For example, the song could be about drugs b/c of the "flying high" bit but also the 'never let me down' part may refer to the idea that one will eventually come down from the drugs and not sustain a prolonged high. The narrator is expressing disappointment in this 'let down'. I will not go as far as to say that it was DM's drug hayday b/c there is not textual evidence to support that, also, the bands heavy durg use seemed to take place from 1992-1995.

I wasn't saying that Martin never did drugs, I was saying Dave wrote the lyrics - if you look at the lyrics in Dave's solo work, and compare with 'Martin's' lyrics, you'll see the similarity - the same person wrote them! (Dave.)

If references such as 'safe as houses', don't tell you that this song is about drugs, then I don't even know what else to say really.

And for everyone who says "Dave was the one doing drugs, not Martin!"...read DM's bio. It's a fascinating read.

Samwalton - yes, to avoid drawing attention to the real meanings to the songs. It's obvious that most DM songs are about or related to drugs; to pretend that Martin wrote the songs is a smokescreen. When Dave says in interviews, for example, that Shake The Disease was 'difficult to get the vocals right on,' he actually means the subject matter of the song is difficult.
