She had to leave...

Los Angeles

All her toys wore out in black and her boys had too
She started to hate every nigger and Jew
Every Mexican that gave her lotta shit
Every homosexual and the idle rich
She had to get out
She gets confused
Flying over the dateline her hands turn red
Cause the days change at night change in an instant the days
Change at night change in an instant
She had to leave
Los Angeles
She found it hard to say goodbye to her own best friend
She bought a clock on Hollywood blvd the day she left
It felt sad she had to get out

General Comment:The song is about Exene's friend from Florida who was a racist and homophobic. There is a number of references to her in "We Got the Neutron Bomb : The Untold Story of L.A. Punk" book. I can't remember her name and don't have the book handy. She was not will liked by the time she left. In the movie "X - The Unheard Music" I believe the character in the car and the one that wrote the letter to Slash was her.

In a way the song is about live style of living a 7 day weekend. The days turn to night is a reference to this and the idea that all toys being worn out. Also her only best friend is referring to most of the scene disliking her and she had worn out her wlecome.

    General Comment:Breakin' it down.

She had to leave .... Los Angeles (she HAS to leave LA)
All her toys wore out in black (for toys to wear out and turn black - not so sure what this refers to)
And her boys had too (the guys she was hanging out with started disappearing)
    She started to hate
Every Nigger and Jew (choice of words here, she already used the word hate, so we can expect this is through her perspective. She only mentions three racial minority groups in LA - one of the most diverse cities in the world. I'm not sure of LA's minority breakdown when this song was made, but I don't think the Jews were in the top three. She doesn't mention Asians, Arabs or Eskimos, or Europeans - if she was in Hollywood area, there are lots of Eastern Europeans (and Russians & Armenians)
Every Mexican that gave her a lotta shit (she is explaining that it wasn't just blanket racial hatred, but indeed the minorities treated her like shit)
Every homosexual and the idle rich (The gay population, again you have to figure that the minority "gay" population of Los Angeles, is cross cultural and not age defined. Also that the idle rich, the choice of the word idle - we can assume its the rich people who do nothing to better the city.)
She had to get out (it's not she "wants" to get out, it's she "had" to get out. meaning it's life or death)

She gets confused ( here is where the song takes another turn, a little confusion to me)
Flying over the dateline (perhaps he gave herself a few months or years to be happy in Los Angeles and now that time has passed, using the word "flying" we can think that it came a lot quicker than she thought it would)
Her hands turn red ( I'm not so sure about this line. I think her hands might turn red from wringing them, or maybe she is working with her hands - some shitty dish washer job? I thought maybe it might be that she is cutting herself. So her hands are turning blood red, again, this leaving Los Angeles is a "must do thing")
'Cause the days change at night (how time flies)
Change in an instant (time is just passing her)
    The days change at night
Change in an instant (these two lines are repeated, with only the word "cause" missing on the second time. emphasizing that the time is going by and quickly. Also that night does not change to day, we can assume she is losing her days, probably because she is only partying, staying out late, sleeping all day and getting nothing accomplished to further her life - see next verse)

She had to leave Los Angeles (again, she doesn't want to leave, she "has" to leave)
She found it hard to say goodbye
To her own best friend (she doesn't want to lose her friends, but it's so urgent that she leaves, she must say goodbye, leaving her best friend - who doesn't want or have to leave either.)
She bought a clock on Hollywood Blvd. (This is my favorite line. Now, Hollywood Blvd. sells mainly to tourists. The street sells shitty T-shirts, nick-nacks, booze, shoes and crap. Out of all the things she can buy as a souvenir she choose a clock. In the part before this, she talked about the passage of time and how quickly it went by. Perhaps she didn't even have a clock, remember, she didn't buy a t-shirt or a shot glass, but a clock. Maybe when she finds her new home, she will start waking up earlier, and having to know what time it is. The fact that she bought this on Hollywood Blvd, rather than at Macys is really why I find this to be the most interesting line. Again, Hollywood Blvd sells crappy tourist junk, most of it with the words "Los Angeles" or "Hollywood" imprinted on it. So she still wants to remember her old life, so this will be the reminder - a clock - for her new life.)
The day she left (Why didn't she wait to the last day? The day you're packing up and moving, do you really want to stop somewhere and take one last look around? - yes that's exactly why you buy it your last day.)
It felt sad (apparently, she was still a little sad about leaving, probably losing her friends and avoiding all the shit that her life turned up).
She had to get out (she has to leave this shit hole)

--- I live in Los Angeles - specifically in Hollywood. I will by a clock the day I leave - just because this song is that fucking cool.

General Comment:This song is about a racist woman who decides to leave Los Angeles because she is sick of all the minorities. It's definitely not a racist song, though.

General Comment:I agree with some users above with the meaning to this song...It's a really good song, I love it.....but JesusBeard, if all you want to do is flame, don't post here. By the way, what is your definition of "real punk"??? I mean if the bands that shaped the genre nearly 30 yrs ago isn't 'real' then I don't know what is.....?!?

General Comment:"...and the words and images were so harsh and bitter that the song would reverberate in my mind for days. The images, I later found out, were personal and no one I knew shared them. The images I had were of people being driven mad by living in the city. Images of parents who were so hungry and unfulfilled that they ate their own children. Images of people, teenagers my own age, looking up from the asphalt and being blinded by the sun. These images stayed with me even after I left the city. Images so violent and malicious that they seemed to be my only point of reference for a long time afterwards. After I left."
