Lyrics for Black Star as interpreted by piesupreme

Black Star Lyrics
I get home from work and you're still standing in your dressing gown
Well, what am I to do?
I know all the things around your head
And what they do to you

What are we coming to?
What are we going to do?

Blame it on the black star
Blame it on the falling sky
Blame it on the satellite that beams me home

The troubled words of a troubled mind
I try to understand what is eating you
I try to stay awake but it's 58 hours
Since that I last slept with you

What are we coming to?
I just don't know anymore

Blame it on the black star
Blame it on the falling sky
Blame it on the satellite that beams me home

I get on the train and I just stand about
Now that I don't think of you
I keep falling over, I keep passing out
When I see a face like you

What am I coming to?
I'm going to melt down

Blame it on the black star
Blame it on the falling sky
Blame it on the satellite that beams me home

I think he's trying to find an excuse about why his life is so dysfunctional but doesn't want to blame it on the "Black star" which happens to be the relationship.

I've always interpreted it as the girl in the song having a mental disorder that the guy cant understand, and eventually couldnt deal with it anymore...."now that i dont think of you"
Ever see the movie Mad Love? think of it in that vein...

This song was actually written about me and my girlfriend. The periods of ennui that consume the relationship. I don't know, this song gives me a feeling of comfort and empathy.

possibly it is yorke talking about how his girlfriend is either an alcoholic or drug addict in the first verse, the second has it seemingly waiting at hospital trying to stay awake with her and then the final verse has her already dead and him trying to cope with the pain that he is going through and he is starting to lose it himself and he is throughout the chorus just trying to figure out why it is happening to him and he can't find a rational reason for it so he blames it on a black star.

The song reminds me of a friend of mine.I never understood the nature of our relationship and why sometimes i feel she's my best friend and other times i wonder why she's so distant from me!!!

I believe it's about the problems people have connecting. Obviously the example is his relationship with a girl, and he can't understand her or really be close to her. And he really can't find out what's wrong. Science, knowledge technology, the satellite, the apocalypse (falling sky) some people would blame... what are we coming to? but the sad realization is that of the separation between people, that it is final and that's all there is..... and Thom's saying that it's futile to blame technology but still is sad for the death of that illusion..

I think the 'black star' might be something that is definitely there, but they can't see. Maybe a bad compatibility, or something. Obviously you can't see a black star. So he's saying 'blame it on the black star', like...blame it on this, our problem...just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not there.

this sums up a time in my life, my girlfriend went to a uni far away from me ''i get on the train and I just stand about now that i don't think
of you.
i keep falling over i keep passing out
when i see a face like you.
what am i coming to?''

makes me think of when i would go down to she her for a weekend and i knew it was not going to work with such distance!

''its 58hrs since that i last slept with
you.'' - (*sigh*)

this song seemed simple enough for me to understand and easily appreciate until i heard Thom say that it was about "Sex in the morning. Which is the best time to have it. As long as you've cleaned your teeth beforehand." Just like Thom, to confuse me as fuck. anyways, great, lovely, absolutely heart-breakingly beautiful song.

thom has said that this song is about sex int he morning, the best time to have it. haha. i think its about not knowing or having a reason -- not being able to define your problems. in the end he knows that the relationship is not going to lat, although he wishes it would. its hanging by a thread at this point.

i think this song is about breaking up coz the relationship obviously isnt working out. its not that theyre not in love, its that she has her own probs, and he doesnt wana deal with them anymore. he thinks hes over her but hes not coz when he sees someone that looks like her he wants her all over again.
i agree with vertigo - the black star is something they cant see but is there. the falling sky tho i think may be representative of her paranoia maybe

It's about a guy whose girlfriend or partner or whatever has mental problems, and is at a complete loss as to what to do about it.

This song is clearly about a failing relationship. I think that when he says he going to blame in the blackstar, he's refusing to blame himslef or take responsibilty for his problems.

The last verse seems to talk about after his girlfriend/wife has left him.

"i get on the train and I just stand about now that i don't think of you. "

He's constantly telling himself that he's over her.

"i keep falling over i keep passing out when i see a face like you."

The truth is that he actually really misses her and once again he's blaming all his problems on the "black star"

"blame it on the satellite".....i think that no matter what happens, some how his life keeps revolving around "her", and he is a satellite in a way, unable to escape her "attraction", despite his wishes to leave...the gravity/force is much too strong for him to ever be able to pull away....

((as stars die, they collapse under their own gravity))

To all Radiohead fans,

Next time you listen to that song, please notice how the lyrics

''i keep falling over i keep passing out
when i see a face like you''

are so full of emotion, that when they are heard and noticed, Thoms voice makes everything else fade away...

I mean I LOVE Radiohead but this The Bends cd is the one I like the least, but I still listen to this song only for when he sings those two sentences. I consider them to be like a ....a small orgasm!! LOL Thats what music does to me.

black star is also another way of saying lsd, on the street. especially when it comes in temporary tattoos that are actual black stars. don't know what that adds.

it is only one of three things he blames it on---change, apocalypse (falling sky) and love or gravity (satellite beaming home).

otherwise yeah. relationship story.

Ya, iI like the Christopher O'Riley cd too. This song is truely amazing. I agree that this is a relationship song (well obviously) and it really hits home with me, especially the last stansa.
I love the bass line on this song too. It is so awesome. How much ass does Radiohead kick?

Oh my god. The emotion in this song... My favorite line ever, in any song, is "now that I don't think of you" .... oh man.

And "The troubled words of a troubled mind.."

To me, it seems to be about his girlfriend being depressed. I mean "still standing in your dressing gown" - haven't you ever been so depressed that you cannot get dressed, you cannot function? So depressed and you cannot even pinpoint why? That is the girl in this song. She is depressed and even she cannot tell why, so how is he to help?

But that last stanza... oh yes, I agree... The best ever... So true. I think everyone has had someone in their life that they should not think about, for one reason or another, but cannot help it. You just love them so much...

This is my favorite Radiohead song because of its simplicity in style, background sounds and lyrics. The whole transition through the song really gets to me with the last lines before the chorus. "What am I coming to? I'm gonna meltdown."

Just mindblowing.

The line "troubled words of a trouble mind" is probably a reference to the Nick Drake song "Time Has Told Me," which begins "Time has told me you're a rare find, a troubled cure for a troubled mind."

"I know all the things around your head and what they do to
you. ?"
This makes me think of a couple where maybe the girl feels with an intensity he does not understand or take seriously.. The line I quoted in perticular makes me think he is an arrogant piece of pompousness that says charming things, but truly was not ready to deal with her and her emotions..But that could be a heartbruise or two speaking...
