Personally, I see something I little different with this song.
It's definitely not sincere... "Your life is historically meaningful, And spans a significant time." That's a complete and blatant lie, and certainly not something BR would ever say sincerely.
However, it's more than just "being sarcastic." I think BR is attacking popular quasi-epicurean attitudes toward life, the idea that we can just ignore the world's problems and fool ourselves out of our insecurities. The idea that it's better to "laugh than cry," that life is short and we ought to just live it up and enjoy ourselves.
Consider the chorus: "Slumber will come soon, And you are helping put it to sleep. <---particularly this line Side by side we do our share, Faithfully assuring that, Slumber will come soon." Slumber... BR is criticizing us, saying that in taking our carefree, self-affirmed attitudes toward life we are falling asleep to the reality around us, deadening ourselves even before we reach our quick literal deaths.
...Those are my thoughts on it, anyway. He's not out there to make fun of people, he's trying to get them to snap out of their rose-colored bubbles (and though the lyrics don't directly go here, perhaps their self-centered pity, as well).
Actually it is not a blatant lie, you're just a pessimist. You do realize that America didn't spring out of the ground the way it is today some 200+ years ago? We are living in important times. Times where we face the threat of WWIII right fucking now in our own homes. A time where information is abundant and easily accessible. A time where within the span of decades, our level of technology skyrocketed. You don't understand the magnitude of things that exist in the world you live in. We sent men INTO F** SPACE. That might be an accomplishment equivalent to the particle of a fart from Gods asshole, but that's still astounding for humans. And a lot of people here are saying get over it, when you don't understand why or how you would feel so unimportant; Because the universe is endless space and you're not even close to anything that would resemble a spec of dust in it. Not to mention people all around are arguing with each other, always in discord, always warring amongst each other even through our words. That's why I , personally, feel unimportant anyway. I don't know what petty reasons everyone else is depressed about. I do admit living on earth is a team effort. Why would anyone want to live with such a shitty team that will never understand how to truly play the game?

dude you are waaaay off base on your first statement. it is not sarcastic in anyway. remember he is speaking to someone who feels like their life has no meaning and everything is pointless. to that BR is saying no you can make a difference. they are speaking out against the complacence of this person and ppl in general who think like that. if we don't beleive our life is significant then we don't act to make the world better hence we assure slumber will come sooner. this is a positive song with a positive message telling people to stop sulking and bitching, stop thinking life is meaningless, and get off your ass and do something with the short life you have.
