Lyrics for This Is Hardcore as interpreted by typo

This Is Hardcore Lyrics
You are hardcore, you make me hard
You name the drama and I'll play the part
It seems I saw you in some teenage wet dream
I like your get-up if you know what I mean
I want it bad
I want it now
Oh, can't you see I'm ready now.
I've seen all the pictures, I've studied them forever
I wanna make a movie so let's star in it together
Don't make a move 'til I say "Action."
Oh, here comes the Hardcore life
Put your money where your mouth is tonight
Leave your make-up on and I'll leave on the light
Come over here babe and talk in the mic
Oh, yeah I hear you now
It's gonna be one hell of a night
You can't be a spectator, oh no
You got to take these dreams and make them whole
Oh, this is Hardcore
There is no way back for you
Oh this is Hardcore
This is me on top of you
And I can't believe it took me this long
That it took me this long
This is the eye of the storm
It's what men in stained raincoats pay for
But in here it is pure, yeah
This is the end of the line
I've seen the storyline played out so many times before
Oh that goes in there
Then that goes in there
Then that goes in there
Then that goes in there
And then it's over
Oh, what a hell of a show
But what I want to know
What exactly do you do for an encore?
Cos this is Hardcore

Pretty much the filthiest song ever...not just the lyrics, but the music. Love it!

From what I sense about this song, it does seem a bit like the singer is on the powerful side, exploitative side. I think it's about the movie, music, or porn industry. Making your way to the big top by doing some things you're not proud of, like sleeping with the director to get into a film, or starting your movie career by doing porn. "Oh, here comes the hardcore life," meaning that she's in too far, now. She's become a part of the industry's market, in which she'll be exploited as most celebrities are. "You got to take these dreams and make them whole. Oh, this is Hardcore. There is no way back for you. Oh this is Hardcore. This is me on top of you." That does sound rather sinister, doesn't it? She dreamed of getting her name out there, but she's completely caught up in the drama of the business, controlled by the demands of the media and the film makers, maybe music producers. Then, her career is washed up. The media's gotten all it wants out of her, and her career, like most was quick. "This is the end of the line. I've seen the storyline played out so many times before." The "that goes in there" repetition is emphasizing how mundane it all is, it's a wham-bam-thank you mam sort of situation.

So, Jarvis's part is almost like the perspective of the industry, looking for fresh meat, seducing young women, then chewing them up and spitting them out. It's almost a mocking tone. Maybe this is the sort of thing he had to deal with as a singer. It's all very shallow, devious, and exploitative. You can't make it unless you've got what it takes, because it's "hardcore."

Most of you guys have taken a literal interpretation to this song but there is more to it than that. This is Hardcore was the first follow-up album to Different Class, which was the first Album that gave Pulp huge commercial success. For years, since Jarvis was 15, he had been trying to make it as a rockstar, giving his whole life, dreaming about it, and then he made it. And with it, all of the problems. He found it not as fulfilling as he dreamed. He reached the pinnacle, and now he's like, what now? I heard he got into drugs to which was bad. But that's gossip, so I don't know for sure. The rock n roll life style can mess you up. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana had many of the same feelings, he said that he was happier before he made it big, when he was with his friends and they would dream about making it as rock stars.

Well I see this song from quite a different prespective.
The lyrics clearly describe a sexual encounter, however I think the song is about revenge.
She used to mean a lot to him in the past, but somehow let him down, so he seduces her all over again just to end up sadistically announcing to her that it meant absolutely nothing and he just used her to get off.
I think the way he sings - almost whispering some of the lyrics with an evil tone, while brutally spitting out others, shows bitterness, cynicism and subterranean hate rather than desire for another person.
Also the atmosphere of the song is sinister, melancholic and vicious rather than sexual or inviting.
"It's what men in stained raincoats pay for": he compares what just happened between them to the cheapest of porn.
"Oh, what a hell of a show But what I want to know
What exactly do you do for an encore?": he sarcastically tells her to her face that she was nothing but a pleasurable yet meaningless sexual object to him.
All in all to me this is about emotionless sex for the purpose of belittling the other person and feeling superior:"There is no way back for you Oh this is Hardcore This is me on top of you And I can't believe it took me this long".
Anyway it's a gorgeous song either way.

I'd love to pretend I figured this out myself, but I'm taking this from interviews with Jarvis Cocker.

Firstly, the song is based on not only porn films, but a pornographic outlook on life. With celebrity comes the idea that people viewing from the outside see a seperate version of you, like actors in a porm movie. People see perfection (or, as Jarvis put it "massive biceps and a two-foot-long cock) but somehow, inside, you're still a person.

Also the idea that your life is more real when everything looks perfect - "Leave your make-up on and i'll leave on the light" shows that this isn't sex for love, it's sex for dramatic effect.

Anyway. That's what I got from stuff Jarvis said about it in interviews.♥

This song is clearly about sex. Not sick sex, perverted sex, or even rape. This song is about a young man, or perhaps even an old man, losing his virginity. “I want it bad. I want it now. Oh can’t you see, I’m ready now…I’ve seen all the pictures, I’ve studied them forever. I wanna make a movie so let’s star in it together.” This clearly shows that the man referred to only has experienced porn in his life, which is the closest he has ever come to sex.

His reference alone about “wet dreams” backed up with “you gotta take these dreams and make them whole” backs up the theory, as well as the line “I can’t believe that it took me this long.”

Also, referring to his inexperience are several lines. “I’ve seen this storyline, played out so many times before”, showing that he is strictly going by what he has seen in his porn movies. “That goes in there, then that goes in there, then that goes in there, then that goes in there, ohhhhh (made in somewhat of a post-ejaculation sound), and then its over”…sounding like he’s taken it from some sort of a porn manual. That’s what this song is about.

Just stating the obvious here, but it's obvious about sex, but the song itself has a sinister tone, so I don't think it's about sex from love, it's a more sinister, creepy type of love.

I love that middle section everyone's mentioned, "this is me on top of you, etc.", and one thing that always blows my mind about this song is that you figure that section has to be the climax, and then it goes into a whole other part, like there's still 2.5 mins left to the song!! Whoa.

Pornography is a metaphor for the music industry. Jarvis is disgusted by the degrading way it uses people and spits them out, only for a quick buck; how everybody (including himself) is so blinded by the glitter and glare of being a celebrity that they don't see the darker, seedier underbelly of it all.

It's an absolutely brilliant epic of a song, with an equally awesome film clip.

If they wanted to wait that long, it shouldn't really matter. As he said, the actual fans would have stayed for that long, the people who just wanted to see the famous people would've gone.

Seems David Gilmour and Jarvis Cocker have something in common.

this was played as the beginning of Pulp's encore a few years back at Glastonbury festival - they had the crowd wait for about 20 or 30 minutes in the cold until they came back out and said "this is for the fan's that are hardcore".... assholes. everyone knew they were going to come back out 'cos the hadn't played 'Common People'.

ok. rant over

song = meh

I agree with the other. I just want to point out how beautifully twisted this song is. It is 100% lust - perverted - about taboo and unbrideled fantasy for the sexual high.Sex is a drug. This narrator is addicted to sex. His mind is full of images and he is playing them all out. There is no going back - once you've gone harcore you can't ever go back.

Sex as a drug is like any other drug - you have to take a bigger hit to get the same high. That is why you can't go back once you go hardcore - normal, vanilla sex won't get you off like it once did.

Unlike, "do you remember the first time", this is about deviant sex not innocent union. The songs are about the total opposite. Here there is no regret, no emotion.

This song has a companion on the lp - "seductive barry". If you listen to them together you will see. Slightly different but same underscore of lust and "fucking passion".

Btw,

I always figured it was about some older man that was fascinated by porn as a teen ["I've seen all the pictures, I've studied them forever"] and wants to make a porno movie.
Ch'yeah.
It's so sleazy, it's sexy. ;]

this makes you want to have sex? it's a little too dark for my tastes in humping. This song is just sleazy, a good sleazy, don't get me wrong, but not quite sexy. I just prefer "Do You Remember The First Time," or "Disco 2000" to this, which isn't to say that this is a bad song, because it certainly isn't. It's just that, to drill it FURTHER into your skulls, it's not my taste.

to me, this song is about Mr. Cocker (at his popular rockstar status) having an encounter with a female from his past that he obviously was sexually attracted to, and fantasized over("seems i saw you in some teenage wet-dream"), and now getting the chance to conquer that dream and fantasy ("you cant be a spectator, oh no, you gotta take these dreams and make them whole")....obviously, he achieves his goal and fulfills a dream, but in the end, its over and thats all there is to it ("what exactly do you do for an encore?")

This is the most sexual explicit and intense song ever written. I like to hear this song without doing anything but... listening. If I'm at work and this song starts, I just let everything apart for those minutes and close my eyes... It's like having a quick sex session anytime, anywhere.

It's wonderfully written and played and that voice... oh my! My favorite part is when he says: "Oh, this is Hardcore, there is no way back for you, oh this is Hardcore, this is me on top of you..." it's just orgasmic...

From the beggining to the end. Marvelous. My favorite song of this album.

I love Pulp.

This song reminds me of dangerous love and dangerous sex, all those forbidden things that people are affraid to admit they love.......such as sex with hookers, watching young teenage porn, odd fetishes, and all those bad things.
It also reminds me alot Serge Gainsbourg and or 60's swinging mod culture, classy but dirty. Just grand! It's today's reincarnation of "Je T'aime Moi Non Plus" by Gainsbourg. SEX, SEX, AND MORE SEX! GIVE IT TO ME, THEN GIVE ME MORE! HAHA.
