Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Though I know that evenin's empire has returned into sand,
Vanished from my hand,
Left me blindly here to stand but still not sleeping.
My weariness amazes me, I'm branded on my feet,
I have no one to meet
And the ancient empty street's too dead for dreaming.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Take me on a trip upon your magic swirlin' ship,
My senses have been stripped, my hands can't feel to grip,
My toes too numb to step, wait only for my boot heels
To be wanderin'.
I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade
Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way,
I promise to go under it.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Though you might hear laughin', spinnin', swingin' madly across the sun,
It's not aimed at anyone, it's just escapin' on the run
And but for the sky there are no fences facin'.
And if you hear vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme
To your tambourine in time, it's just a ragged clown behind,
I wouldn't pay it any mind, it's just a shadow you're
Seein' that he's chasing.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

Then take me disappearin' through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time, far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted, frightened trees, out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea, circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.

Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I'm not sleepy and there is no place I'm going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I'll come followin' you.

General Comment:The Tambourine Man is God. It's no coincidence that the term is capitalized. This is a song, by an artist, that reflects his frustration with the stupidity of this world and he's ready to go anywhere, acknowledging that he believes God is the only answer, and the only way out of his deep state of frustration. But you all knew that, I'm 62 and just figured this out. How dumb am I, It's people like me he's trying to leave behind. Sorry Mr. Dylan. I'm going to leaarn to play this song.I must.

General Comment:I can't say I know what most of the lyrics mean but I can tell you that this...
"And if you hear vague traces of skippin' reels of rhyme
To your tambourine in time, it's just a ragged clown behind,
    I wouldn't pay it any mind, it's just a shadow you're
    Seein' that he's chasing."

"Skipping reels of rhyme" refers to the Rap genre. "Just a ragged clown behind." I think we can agree that most of these Rap artists are talentless clowns.
"Just a shadow your seeing that he's chasing"... They are chasing Lucifer since they sold their souls to rap about committing sins in order for the money they make.

General Comment:Adrenaline kicking from a sleepless night. Exhausted but too excited, feeling energetic, and most of all feeling good from doing a lot of things -feeling alive!

Following a tambourine man. Like a child to Pied Piper, although he is tired physically, mentally and emotionally he is following Mr. Tambourine man, wanting him to play his song so that he can be taken by the music and for once, even in a short moment, he can escape momentarily. He wants to feel how it's like to enjoy life without worries.

In short, Mr. Tambourine man symbolizes the heart. We have to follow the beating of our hearts and enjoy life as it comes for what it's worth.

"Let me forget about today until tomorrow" meaning, he wants to forget today's trouble and have fun even just for today. But, he will return to his normal life tomorrow.

General Comment:The song doesn't necessarily have to be about one thing or another. That's the great thing about poetry. I don't know if it's "about" drugs, but much of the language is very familiar to anyone who has any in-depth experience with mind altering substances. Dylan may not have tried LSD by the time this song was written, but you can bet your sweet petunias that he was doing a crap-load of speed. To be up in the middle of the night knowing that your body needs sleep but is unable to do so, and also still feeling elated, because your on speed afterall, is an all too recognizable desciption to those of us with a history of amphetamine use. But, again, this doesn't mean that I think drugs are what the song is "about."

Another way to meet the problem: Does anyone else see an analogy beteween Mr. Tamborine Man and the Pied Piper? "Play your song for me; I promise to go following." How many of us have dropped our responsibilities in the "real world" in order to follow the hypnotic lure of music on some fantastical advenure? How many parents have told their children to choose a practical career; that their rock n roll band is a dead end? And how many children have been compelled to ignore that advice, to follow rock n roll to whatever end it may bring- riches, fame, degradation, or death? For those of us who have heard the pipe a-playing and the tamborine a-jingle-jangling there is no other option but to follow.

Dylan paradoxically both is and follows the Pied Piper. And I that think this song is his ode to that enigmatic enchanter of souls.

My Interpretation:Bob has stated that this song isn't about drugs and the muse concept and the Lord Buckley concept interests me, but the dead give away line in this song is "MAGIC SWIRLING SHIP" and what do the bells on a tambourine look like? Flying saucer ring a bell?

The narrator desires to go on a trip with mr tambourine man (song was written before Dylan dropped acid). If you see the magic swirling ship fly across the sun, it's not aimed at anyone (not a missile) it's escaping on the run for the sky there are no fences facing (leaving the planet). The narrator is ready to go anywhere.

Also consider that THE BYRDS did a PARODY on this song called HEY MR SPACE MAN--"hey mr spaceman won't you please take me along, i won't do anything wrong, hey mr spaceman, won't you please take me along for a ride?"

My Interpretation:It’s the high that you feel when you’re tired from doing a lot of things and have done them well. You’re tired (“my weariness amazes me”), but feel energetic and good. So you don’t want to sleep. He’s walking in NYC at maybe 6:00 in the morning feeling good in this way. The streets are empty and dead. “The ancient empty street’s too dead for dreaming”. Yet he seeks sensory stimulation of some sort because he’s not “dead” – though weary, he’s feeling so alive. Then he gets behind a tambourine man who’s walking along, playing the instrument. Mental stimulation he so needs, amid the otherwise deadness. That’s all it takes, in that state of mind. He’s elated by and for that moment reveres the tambourine man. It’s a momentary kind of unique feeling which Dylan perfectly lyricizes for this song. Tomorrow he may see the tambourine man and not even notice.

My Opinion:The song is about living free and following your heart. Or about living from the heart. The tambourine man symbolises the heart. What a tambourime man does is follow a beat. Its about following the beating of your heart. Or thats what it seems to me.

General Comment:The last verse, in particular, should be a mandatory part of all English courses around the world for all ages. It's so beautiful. Listening to this song shifts the weight of the day of my shoulders. It nearly makes me cry every time.

    A song of dreams... :)
