Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve.
The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future.
Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere"
The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”
The sandy haired son of Hollywood
Lost his faith in all that's good
Closed the curtain, unplugged the clock
Hung his clothes on the shower rod
But he never got undressed
And no, he never made a mess
It's funny how life turns out
The odds of faith in the face of doubt
Camera One closes in
The soundtrack starts
The scene begins
You're playing you now
You're playing you now
You're playing you now
You're playing you now
You're playing you now
Take a bow
Take a bow
The trophy wife from Palisades
Whose yearbook beauty never fades
Sits and watches the sea fold in
And wonders what might have been
If she could ever have the chance
Would she do it all again?
It's funny how life turns out
The odds of faith in the face of doubt
Camera One closes in
The soundtrack starts
The scene begins
You're playing you now
You're playing you now
You're playing you now
You're playing you now
You're playing you now
Take a bow
Take a bow
On the corner
By his streets
He sits in his lawnchair
In the heat
Sightseers see
What they want
They're selling star-maps
To the sun
The sunny-haired son of Hollywood
Lost his faith in all that's good
Closed the curtain, unplugged the clock
Hung his clothes on the shower rod
But he didn't get undressed
And no, he didn't seem depressed
It's funny how life turns out
The odds of faith in the face of doubt
Camera One closes in

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
okay, i'm not really taking my time to read other people's comment, so forgive me if someone already said this, but i think this song is about a guy who gets all caught up in the glamour of hollywood, and when he realizes what he was doing, and that everyone is lying to him, he commits suicide.
I always saw this song as being not about celebrities acting, but how so many of us in the "real world" havetry to to be something or someone we're not,as a means of coping with being unable to accept the actual role life has handed us - but when the day comes when we finally have to be what we truly are("you're playing you now"),we're not successful at it. Imagining yourself as something/someone better can provide the confidence to face life sometimes(albeit temporary),but sooner or later you have to play yourself, and that sense of confidence dissipates. The "take a bow" part is ironic because in this case playing onesself is their worst performance.
*have to try to be someone else, typo.
Great song. I think the guy Josh is singing about is lying to himself, according to the line ",Yor playing you now." Shows that celebrities have their secrets.
yea i agree, this is a great song, i wish it would've gotten more play. Josh joplin is a great songwriter.
Yeah I thought the character was committing suicide as well.
Me too, but I think overall it's about doubting yourself. The first person doubted too much and had too little faith so he kills himself, the second person doubt and wonders if she would do things differently and the third person doesn't doubt his choices and has faith in himself so he is happy.
This is probably the most brilliant song I've ever heard & that's saying something. It's about how everyone's kind of the star of their own movie -- but you don't need to be on the silver screen to be important or relevant. Heck, some people that are on the silver screens aren't even important or relevant & feel that way so that's why they do things like hang themselves on the shower rod. If you're satisfied with yourself, that's all that matters, and you can "take a bow."
"selling star-maps to the sun"... seems to mean that society gives life advice to and perhaps forces opinions each person, though each person already knows how to live his or her life. The sun already knows stars, it doesnt need a map
I don't get the feeling that the son of Hollywood was successful. I think he was either a child star or the son of celebrities that didn't go anywhere. Either way, the song is about people who get pigeion-holed into playing the role that is expected of them insteading of "playing you." The same goes for the prom queen who now wonders if she could have been something more if she hadn't just played the part of a beautiful barbie doll everyone expected her to be.
While I think elpierogigrande's interpretation is awesome, I think it is also literal. The failure who's childhood was based on expectations of being a star now makes his living on those Hollywood memories, making them pathetically inescapable.
Also, the character in the last verse also killed himself. "He never seemed depressed" be he still hung his clothes on the shower rod without getting undressed.
I like the use of the phrase "take a bow." It can represent death, as they chose, or it can mean the end of the role they were playing. They could simply take a curtain call on the role that was expected of them and leave the stage to play themselves.
It's about what lies behind the facade of fame and success. So many people buy into the myth that those things will lead to happiness. "Sightseers see What they want. They're selling star-maps To the sun"
This song is about what happens when these actors and trophy wives are "off camera".
