We're a ship without a storm
Cold without the warm
Light inside the darkness lit at peace

We're a laugh without a tear
Hope without the fear
We are coming??..Home

We're off to the Witch
We may never never never come home
But the magic that we'll feel is worth a lifetime

We're all thrown upon the cross
We'll be thrown before the toss
You can release yourself but the only way is Down

We can't come alone
We are Fire We are stone
We're the hand that writes & quickly moves away

[CHORUS]
We'll know for the first time
If we're Evil or Devine
We're the Last in Line

Two Eyes from the East
It's the Angel of the Beast
And the answer lies between all good and Bad

We search for the Truth
We could die upon the Tooth
But the thrill of just the chase is worth the pain

[CHORUS]
We'll know for the first time
If we're evil or devine
We're the last in line??Oh

We're the last in line?.
See how we shine

We're the last in
We're the last in
We're the last in
We're the last in Line Oh

We're a ship without a storm
We're theCold without the warm
We're a laugh without a tear
We're the far without the near

We're the last in
We're the last in
We're the last in
We're the last in Line
See how we shine

We're the last in Line??.

Rock on Ronnie!!!

General Comment:It's about how he tried to make his own human slave but it just turned out to be a horrible mess and he was forced to kill it.

General Comment:This is one of the most intense metal songs ever recorded. I see the meaning to be , we all are born in sin and our lives are full of choices. We have to choose to take the road of evil or divinity, our choices are in what we do.

Song Meaning:Ronnie James Dio was a gigantic fan of old legends, mythology and fantasy - "The Last In Line" song was written about the legendary ghost ship, 'The Flying Dutchman' - whose Captain swore a pact with the devil which doomed him and his crew to sail the eastern seas forever - never reaching the bay of its homeland. I remember Ronnie James Dio explaining the story in an interview with a British magazine back in the summer of 1984.

General Comment:I think the first part of the song describes the condition of being safe but also unsatisified in some way.
"We are a ship without a storm" -> This ship may be safe, but ships are also built to withstand storms.
"The cold without the warm" -> something fulfilling is missing (no warmth). That's the reason to abandon the old safe condition and move towards an uncertain but thrilling future: "We may never never never come home But the magic that we'll feel Is worth a lifetime".
This song clearly is about the importance of taking a risk.
Or put in other words: Get off ya fat ass, go out and reach for the sky!

My Interpretation:We're off to the witch
We may never never never come home
But the magic that we'll feel
    Is worth a lifetime

They took a path that wasn't acceptable by God, but they wanted to because they wanted to feel what it was like to sin. It was worth the lifetime, that feeling, but now they are facing judgment, and are standing last in line. God is undecided, so he makes them wait.

General Comment:Never gave it much thought, but as I listen it's kind of the anthem to the kid who had nothing or the wolf who eats last in the pack. The struggles that make us strong. The lasts in line.

General Comment:Another theory is that the kid in the video looks like a young dio so dio is escaping religon probably christianity but they say he is codemned so the only way to go is down hell

General Comment:I think the song is about christianity and religon in general and how it corrupts and indoctrinates and you can free yourself but in order to do so you condemn yourself to hell "the only way to go is down" to hell or so religon say, just watch the music video in one part there is a class and the head are caged so all they can do is listen and watch a tv screen so the religon is indoctrinating them.

General Comment:I'm gonna agree with trapezoid on some of this.

The intro into the song is about the unborn child and innocence. An unborn child is a pure thing; not yet tainted by the corruption of the world. The child is born, or "coming home."

    "We're a ship without a storm
    The cold without the warm
Light inside the darkness that it needs, yeah

    We're a laugh without a tear
    The hope without the fear
    We are coming - home"

We're off to the witch. I agree with trapezoid, the witch means the world or the state of. Dio is saying the world is a sketchy place and you might not make it out alive but the journey is completely worth the time and effort. Rock on!

    We're off to the witch
We may never never never come home
But the magic that we'll feel
    Is worth a lifetime

The next verse is a religious reference IMO. "We're all born upon the cross" could (and I think) is a religious reference. Jesus, God, and Christ are everywhere and constantly being shoved down our throats. You can release yourself, but the only place to go is Hell, so says the "Christians."

We're all born upon the cross
    The throw before the toss
    You can release yourself
But the only way is down

The rest of the song starting with "We don't come alone" reinforces the fact that we aren't by ourselves. There are others out there that think and act such as we do.

    We don't come alone
We are fire we are stone
    We're the hand that writes
    Then quickly moves away

We'll know for the first time
    If we're evil or divine
    We're the last in line
    We're the last in line

    Two eyes from the east
It's the angel or the beast
    And the answer lies between
    The good and bad

We're the Last in Line; The Last to Die. The last to find out the truth for ourselves. What happens after death.

General Comment:I think this song is about the eternal rainbow that makes of the dreams of wizards come true. I mean if you think about it:

    "We search for the truth
We could die upon the tooth"

the tooth of what? of a dragon.

Or take a look at this:

    "Two eyes from the east
It's the angel or the beast
    And the answer lies between"

Well, what lies between an angel or the beast? An angel-like beast, right? Like a Hyppogryph!
Ok, so now you're asking, what a Hyppogryph has to do with the eternal rainbow...well, it's simple.
Rainbows are what the palace of the virgin is made out of, and the dragon is the lost snake. You follow? So, basically dragon's ARE rainbows!!! I know right? My friend stayed up all night smoking meth and we spread every Dio lyric out on the carpet and rearranged them until we figured out his whole cosmology.
