so many people think it's about being gay, which I would have never thought of, but the video is about a straight person, who apparently is addicted to porn, and is stalking or following a lady, who he sees as an pornographic image. He looks at the image, then at the woman, then back at the imagine, to the lyrics 'You're just a picture...you're an image caught in time'
Then the guitarists are stroking the neck of their guitars, while the woman perves on them.
1.When there's lightning, you know it always brings me down= Light is God, when he's reminded of the absence of God in his life he sinks deeper into depression
2.Cause it's free and I see that it's me who's lost and never found= In God you find true freedom, without him you're in bondage to your sins. Also the lost and never found is a play on the words from Amazing Grace "I once was lost but now I'm found" a song about redemption through God's grace and love.
3.I cry out for magic= He yearns for something more, something supernatural, there has to be more to life
4.I feel it dancing in the light= He feels the answer may be God, his conscience is leaning towards that
5.It was cold, lost my hold to the shadows of the night= though he did seek God at first, the temptations of evil appealed more to him, and in the end won out
6.No sign of the morning coming= Jesus is the morning star(REV 22:16)morning also brings the light(God), but he's not coming because it's too late, the individual is now in Hades.
7.You've been left on your own= Hades is total absence of God, you are alone.
8.Like a Rainbow in the Dark a Rainbow in the Dark= A rainbow doesn't exit without light, you don't exist without God. Your potential would have shown through if you had followed God and allowed his light to fill you, instead you chose darkness and no future.

10.When you've tried do they hide deep inside, is it someone that you know= every time you've turned away from sin you've always relapsed because you've never put your faith in Jesus Christ but instead tried to do it alone. The someone you know is you, you will always fail without Jesus, only he can break the bondage of sin.
11.You're just a picture, you're an image caught in time= we were made in the image of God but also given a soul, but you've neglected your soul and now you're just an empty carcass for all time. With God time will lapse for eternity without him you are frozen in emptiness forever.
12.We're a lie you and I, we're words without a rhyme= Truth is the word of God, without it you are a lie. Without God your life has no meaning, no reason or rhyme.
13.Feel the magic, I feel it floating in the air= there are supernatural powers in the world if you seek them you will find them, good or bad
14.But it's fear and you'll hear it calling you beware, Look Out!= it's a warning that this "magic" is the opposite of love(God), it's fear(Satan), Beware or you'll end up like me, a rainbow in the dark.

Its been years so I'm paraphrasing here, but you get the basic idea.
After reading what others have written, I believe he went back and edited what he had written down, maybe putting other connotations to it, but the football game was what he claims was the inspiration for it. I do believe the Blackmoor/Rainbow breakup could be a real possibility for him to write it up more than he originally started with.
the magic refers to change, he wanted change but couldnt quite grasp it.

one person said that it could also mean that he is lost which I agree with as well.
a rainbow is the diffusion of light. the seven colors of the rainbow are the seven parts of a ray of light, split up.
therefore, a rainbow CANNOT exist in the dark, for it is but light, split into seven parts. so a "rainbow in the dark" is something that does not exist, cannot exist, is contradictory, etc...
