Oh yeah it started today in a cloud
And if I were the sun I would shout
I've got so much shining left before I'm out
It began with a spark, then a flame
Grew into a fire, then spread out again
And I just woke up here surrounded by the whole thing

Now we have got to get out of here
In our darkest hour
Where we may not make it

I can't see a thing through the smoke
And if i could breathe I'd try not to choke
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, nowhere to go
Sometimes I get stuck, yeah I get so upset
I burn at the end, I learn to regret
Just one toss of that faithful cigarette

Now we have got to get our of here
In our darkest hour
I think the end is near
We have got to get out of here
In our darkest hour
Where we may not make it

General Comment:I agree, the whole song may be a metaphor, but you cant ignore the references to the "darkest hour" as being in a burning building, or something on fire.

"I've got so much shinning left before I'm out"
Maybe he is too young to die in this.

    "I learn to regret
Just once toss of that fateful cigarette"
You toss a cigarette in the wrong place, and a fire is bound to start.

"Yeah, it began with a spark
    Then a flame
    Grew into a fire
    The spread out again
And I just woke up here surrounded by the whole thing"
So after he tosses that cigarette he takes a little nap in the house. He wakes up and the whole thing had become an inferno.

    "I can't see a thing
    Through the smoke
    And If I could breathe
    I'd try not to choke
Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, nowhere to go"
He is trapped in the house--no way to escape.

"I think the end is near"
    Self explanatory.

So tell me I am taking the song way too literally, but you can't ignore the obvious references to my conclusion.

General Comment:I think its about a problem you have and how it can grow into something so big when it started out so small (as a cigarette).
    "It began with a spark
    Then a flame
    Grew into a fire
    The spread out again"
After a while your problem becomes so big that you can't control it. Then it takes over your life and you feel you can't recover from it.

General Comment:i could easily see this being about forest fires, especially when you take into consideration where they are from... LA. soooo many fires here in CA. it gets annoying after a while.

General Comment:I think its fairly obvious what this song means. The title basically explains it. The verses about the cloud and fire are mediphors. You know, the cloud follows you when youre having a bad day? And Johnny Cash fell into a burning ring of fire?
