Lyric Correction:Close the door, put out the light
You know they won't be home tonight
The snow falls hard and don't you know?
The winds of Thor are blowing cold
They're wearing steel that's bright and true
They carry news that must get through

They choose the path where no one goes

    They hold no quarter

Walking side by side with death
The devil mocks their every step
The snow drives back the foot that's slow
The dogs of doom are howling more
They carry news that must get through
To build a dream for me and you

They choose the path where no one goes

They hold no quarter, they ask no quarter
The pain, the pain without quarter
    They ask no quarter
The dogs of doom are howling more!

General Comment:You can't disrespect Led Zeppelin because they brought hard rock to where it is today,
    but...
Tool beat the shit out of the original. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaamazing.

My Opinion:Im putting this record straight when it comes to sucha masterpiece as this, both zepplin and tool alike. Plant and Maynard are both very powerful artist who obiviously have had a hhard road, and maybe at some point were rolling stones, someone who is always at search of home but once thigns get too stagnent, it scares the psychy, which is forced into survival mode, after a while it becomes a form of instinc. This idea behind this song could write a book, but i don't beilive that it has anythign to do with the lord of the rings trilogy or war what so ever.period.i beilive that this song hits home and in order to help the artist recieve maximum atttention, "you need to take yourself to a place that isnt only comfratble but vurnerable, close your eyes.. and and we'll meet you on the other side."which what in my opinon is what is the point behind salivia, maynard begining to enter the stage of self-forgiveness. With this song however"Lock the door, kill the light.
    No one's coming home tonight.
The sun beats down and don't you know?
All our lives are growing cold, oh...
They bring news that must get through.
To build a dream for me and you, oh."- someone faced with a decision of desertion,

    ma
wow did i open up a barrel of funkin worms.lol

General Comment:I soooo love this song. So dark and heavy. Adam's solos are awesome and Danny's drumming is first-rate and...well it's just awesome. I'm not sure what this song is about, the lyrics are typical Maynard (what the fuck does this mean?). But it's awfully dark whatever it's about :P

General Comment:Definition of "quarter" according to dictionary.com:

    23. mercy or indulgence, esp. as shown in sparing the life and accepting the surrender of a vanquished enemy: to give quarter; to ask for quarter.

Seems pretty obvious, right. It's also the 23rd definition listed. Hmmm.

My Interpretation:Humbly, i present my two cents.

To me it sounded like a reference to Hades or Pluto and the Dark Place that he rules - cold, dark, isolated, no one goes there. The god of the underworld also happens to be wealthy - is that what they meant by 'quarter?'...

Jungian psych, and astrology, when talking about Pluto, they mean the part of the psyche that is Deep, Dark, Hidden... Which contains crap, dead stuff we buried and don't want to face, yet after confronting those, we discover Wealth, like wisdom, a sense of power or purpose, renewed life, and peace...

I might be far out but it sounded to me like the narrator has just made the decision to plunge into the depths where no one else goes to find his treasure... It's recommending introspection (lights out, locked doors, just you), as cure for 'lives grown cold,' 'dying peace in me and u'...... The dead go down to Pluto and find wealth. If you are a Scorpio/Pluto type u know what it means.

I was listening to this song one ugly morning after a bad party night, and the lyrics coincided with my thoughts, feelings.

Led Zep's version talks about another thing entirely, though. War, or something like that.

General Comment:This is hands down the best cover i've ever heard but Led Zeppelin definately has the better version. They capture the erie, cold and dark feeling that the song is really about.
