Lyrics for Exit Music (For a Film) as interpreted by piesupreme

Exit Music (For a Film) Lyrics
Wake from your sleep
The drying of your tears
Today we escape, we escape

Pack and get dressed
Before your father hears us
Before all hell breaks loose

Breathe, keep breathing
Don't lose your nerve
Breathe, keep breathing
I can't do this alone

Sing us a song
A song to keep us warm
There's such a chill, such a chill

You can laugh a spineless laugh
We hope your rules and wisdom choke you
Now we are one in everlasting peace
We hope that you choke, that you choke
We hope that you choke, that you choke

We hope that you choke, that you choke

I love this song. especially after watching Romeo and Juliet. Perfect song for the perfect movie. I cannot say enough about this song and how much it means to me.
This as a lot of resemblance to myself and to others from the past. If you only knew.
Listen and Feel.

I was in a relationship where the girl's parents were opposed to us dating. When you're young and your parents essentially own you, you feel pretty trapped. When you're young and naive and optimistic, you can do anything if you put your mind to it. And it seems like the couple in this song were laying in bed and decided to run away together. "Pack and get dressed, before your father hears us" But when you're young and run away you usually find that you can't survive on the streets. I get the feeling that the couple in the song has run away on a winter night, finding some hidden place to sleep outside. "Sing us a song, a song to keep us warm, there's such a chill" He's asking her to give him hope, to make him continue believing that they can be together.

In the last part it seems that the couple addresses the cynical adults of the world. As if they could see them suffering on the street, laughing at them. Spineless because they gave up hope a long time ago. That their rules and restrictions bind them, but the couple has refused to let them bind themselves. Then at last he tells them how he feels about "them". "We hope that you choke".

It's a song that I think most of us can relate to, and translates well to the story of Romeo and Juliet.

(sorry for the long explanation)

Well this is one of fave Radiohead songs and one of the most depressing songs ever.Thom Yorke said that it's about the morning after the last night he spent with Jullitte and made love..the morning where he goes to the banishment and never sees her alive again. It's just so sad and beautiful especially the music which completely haunts you.

Kid Anus is possibly the flattest, drabbest, most shoulder-shrugging pathetic LP I've ever had the opportunity to hear. It's the sound of an unpleasant man wiping his arse on your money and goodwill. He wants you not to buy it, for Christ's sake! The least you could do is oblige him.

this was written pretty much specifically for the 1995 remake of Romeo and Juliet (my favorite film) and if you read the lyrics and take them exactly they represent romeo and juliet and the entire story, etc. etc.

Like bluekitty2 I also think that this is like Romeo and Juliet. They are disobaying their parents and are going to be together forever in everlasting peace, which leads to believe they have ended their lives together. They don't care what people think of them and hope that all the people that are aginst them being together choke, on all their wisdom. They can't touch them now.

I agree with everyone that relates this song as being perfect for romeo and juliet. Terrific movie, my all time favorite, and perfect song to play at the end of a couples tragic love story. This song really makes you feel thier pain, but oddly enough it makes you feel something painful that has happned to you.... It's such a sad but yet beautiful song. I've always said , I have never come across a band that can make you feel soo much , than the way Radiohead does.

I think he wrote this song to say what he would feel and do if he were in Romeo's place, shag and leave, not wait around to be found out.

While a few of the above meanings are accurate (the whole 'Thom wrote it about R+J thing'), it is also true that the creators of the movie sent Thom Yorke the last scene of the movie where Romeo and Juliet commit suicide together, so he would write a song for it, and that's where the inspiration came from, that last desperate moment of the film. Too bad that they never put this song in the movie, only played it for the ending credits.

Ah...yet another song from my favorite movie, Romeo + Juliet. This is actually where I first heard Radiohead from. This fits into Romeo and Juliet's life so well. I totally agree w/ WastedYouth. I wish it was in the movie too! It's such a great song, along with Talk Show Host. Two songs that definately would be on my life soundtrack! LOL

Has anybody ever heard anything to the rumor that the background noise towards the end of the song is a sound clip from a black box on a plane that crashed. Just something a friend passed along to me. I doubt there's any truth to it as that would be kind of tasteless and insensitive, but it would fit the tone of the song. Has anyone else heard anything about this?

i never knew about the connection with romeo and juliet when i first heard this song. i always thought it was remiscent of the beatles song "she's leaving home". of course in that song the focus is more on the parents' reaction to losing their daughter, whereas in this song the focus is on the couple who are gone. but, after learning about the connection with the movie, there really can be no other interpretation that fits as well.
