That is not the real answer. That's Jerry Only's answer. In interviews Glenn Danzig has told how Jerry "Didn't wrote and doesn't know what the fuck it's about! It's about violence."

Loveeeeeee this song.
I believe this is for the movie THX-1138
Or Police code. Or sex. 69x69 = 138 ;)
I used to think they were saying
"WE ARE ONE BLOODY APE, WE AREEE, ONE BLOODY APE!"

No... Noo... Danzig isn't bitter... He's just creating an element of confusion as to what the hell the lyrics are about... It would make sense, seeing as he used to tell his bandmates to answer all questions regarding the meaning of the song by simply saying: "What?! You don't know?"

... As posted by Diablo... :P

138 has nothing to do with police code.... different police units have different code. precincts are actually starting to ditch radio code so other units can understand them

ok, guys I have an answer
when Glenn Danzig was young, everyone knows that
he was picked on, he was an outcast, a misfit if you will
hahaha
anyways
he divised a saying with his misfits buddies(not the band)
"We are one .38"

a .38 is a revolver gun, as in saying they kill as one.

haha
:D
idk it was just a thought I had made

i myself believe it's about the movie

whenever i hear we are 138 i think of all the fiends like kind of saying we are one...idk why though

it's a genius idea really if it's not about the movie, to have a kind of simple song and not tell anyone the meaning so people almost obsess about it, glenn i applaud you.

FUCKING ROBOTS! BOTS OF DESTRUCTION!! HAHAH!

yeah, it's the movie thiiing. and another reason to believe that is the repitition of 138... such as a robot is repititious. i don't think i slept that right or it might not even be a word.

It seems to me like everyone is looking too deep. He says "its time to be an android not a man" that's a robot, not a dead body. Where is this confusion coming from.

"These are all interesting theories, but I know the real story...and you should too.
Simply enough, "We Are 138" is a sci-fi song, based heavily on George
Lucas' first sci-fi movie "THX-1138." It's about a time in the future
when people are known by numbers instead of names.
Consider the lyrics:
"Do you think we're robot clean...
Does this face look almost mean...
Is it time to be an android, not a man?"
Not convinced? Read what The Misfits themselves have to say. Jerry
has answered the question many times. Below is part of an interview
by Chris Schneberger form July '96:
Chris: What is the true meaning behind '138'?
Jerry: '138' is like people being treated as androids where you have a
number instead of a name, so it's like the human number would be 138.
Chris: Was that in a movie?...George Lucas' first film?..."THX-1138"?
Jerry: There you go. But I mean, it's taken from that and that's
pretty much what it is. We had buttons made once, they were robots
with '138' that looked half human/android kinda things, long before
your Terminator or stuff like that. It's a really good song, I mean,
'138', it's great all the way around.
Former guitarist Bobby Steele had an interesting twist on this story:
"This has got to be Glenn's biggest joke on his fans. He told me it
was from the book "I, Robot" and that there was a character named
'138' in it. We used to have badges with a picture of a robot with
'138' on his forehead. I wonder is Jerry has one, or remembers it. I
have the book, but there is no such character. It just shows the
occasional brilliance of the guy (Glenn Danzig). This'll keep people
talking for years. He used to tell us that if someone asked what it
meant, we should just laugh, and in a mocking tone say 'What? you
don't know?'""

it seem to me that jerry might be right that the number came from the movie, but wrong about the meaning of the song.

like danzig said, the song seems to be about violence. - in the eyes of a tiger, we are robots, detached from animal instinct, impotent to commit acts of violence. we are slowly moving away from our natures and our individual identities to a sanitized, homogenized culture. we are 138 - a robot collective, no longer men, no longer individuals.

I really doubt it is the fake "I, Robot" thing. It seems too condescending. It would be like Danzig going, "Ha ha, I tricked all my loyal fans into thinking this song that they attach emotional and personal involvement in means anything." Danzig may be a dick sometimes, but I've never seen/heard of him disrespecting his fans.

interesting with the whole "69*2" thing,
like where you're coming from with the whole "THX-1138" idea,
but the song actually refers to a company number from Vietnam. And the lyric is "in the eyes of Saigon."

meltingman, the lyric is NOT "in the eyes of Saigon". Kinda sounds like it, or like I used to think"science", but if you read the readily available lyrics around the net (here for example) or in the "coffin box", the lyric is definitely "in the eyes of tiger".
To the police code theorists...According to tech-faq.com there is no police code of 138. In fact nowhere that I've looked is there a police radio code of 138. Not saying it doesn't exist, just not on the dozen and a half websites I checked. A very small handful use 10-38 which is generally "stopping a suspicious vehicle". However, Bergen County NJ, home of Lodi, original home of The Misfits, appears to have no such code as 138. Besides, SFPD codes mean jack to a punker from Lodi, NJ in 1978. Especially with no such thing as the internet. Lets not forget when this song was written. In 1978 George Lucas was kinda big, what with Star Wars and all...THX-1138, even its wikipedia entry mentions this song. I like this as yet another movie reference in the Misfits song catalog. Why that number though? "What, You don't know?!"

Never saw the George Lucas film, but as I heard, I'm pretty much sure the song is about it. The name of the song is based it the name of the movie (THX 1138). The lyrics of the song coincide with the argument of the film. About the police codes, I'm sure it isn't about it. The rest of the lyrics have nothing to do with it. It's definitively about the film. Short, but really good lyrics.

haha supposedly 138 is the code to kill without thinking twice, but I don't know if that's true or not. The song is about the George Lucas movie.

If one says "we are one thirty eight" fast it maight also sound like "we are one dirty ape" ("in the eyes of the tiger)
It might be about rioting and resistance.
This is one of my favorite songs by them, together with Attitude and Last Caress.
