Jerry Only says that "138" is from the George Lucas film, and it pretty much means humans being given a number, and 138 is that number. Shit like that. However, the WRITER of the song, Glenn Danzig stated, "They didn't write the song and they don't know what the fuck it's about. It's about violence." I personally think Danzig was being kind of bitter about it and didn't want Jerry to be right. But that's my opinion.

Poison Pale is right. It's from an idea of the film THX-1138. That is the sign of a person in a future world who has a number and not a name. Go watch the movie, it's quite good. Since THX-1138 would be to hard to sing, they shortened it to 138. Poison is exactly correct in this case. I also believe that Glenn was just pissed about it.

Not to be a smarty-pants, but 137 is murder/death/kill, not 138 or 108.

the number 138 is from george lucas's first film thx-1138 mentioned above and its basically the number given to human beings from my understandin......i've never seen the movie so not entirely sure but the misfits originally told people when they were asked about the number"what you don't know what 138 means?" kinda as a joke.....but eventually glen started tellin people he got the number from some old science fiction book and that it was the name of the main character but from what i hear the character in the named book doesn't exist...i guess it was another joke of sorts.... so sumone confronted one of the other misfits i....'m guessin jerry not entirely sure here eitehr...... he said it was from the movie thx-1138 and that it wasn't from a book or police code for anything or 69x2

i thinks it's from an old book called 'anthem' written by ayn rand. Set in the distant future, Anthem the story of a collectivist society where the word “I” has been eradicated from the language, crushing the very notion of individualism. and the people in the books name's are numbers like 138. and one person says we instead of i. (i.e. "we jumped" instead of "i jumped")

Im sure the point of the song is personal, "138" means something different to everyone one who hears it. because its a random number on first inspection it doesnt mean anything specific and at the same time it can mean something very important to one person.
I think it is about identity in that way. We are all 138, but 138 is what you make of it.
i think all these theories are very interesting, especially the police code one.
i'd like to ask though, has anyone ever considered it might be some racist/neo-nazi reference?
the number 18 is often used by neo-nazis as AH (adolf hitler) are the first and eighth letters of the alphabet.
If Glenn Danzig really did consider all these different themes; police codes, THX-1138, surpression and expression of individuality etc then i think he probably knew of those possible racist connotations.

i love the misfits and this song but ive always been open to the fact that they might have been quite backwards politically.

Police codes:

1 - Acknowledge this Call

38 - Simple Assault

He pronounces it 1-38 and not 138. So I think that that's it, especially since Danzig himself said "It's about violence"
