this just feels like the perfect song- the kind of song that every song writer tries to write cause you sit there and listen to it and are moved and amazed by it the whole time no matter how many times you listen to it - it's like you cant go wrong and you never get tired of it or are anxious to turn to the next song- more likely to put it on repeat. i love that it's a love song and it's so sincere cause everybody knows what it's like to love someone- even if love seems to never be returned- it's like this song fits no matter what. possibly my favorite song by dave- i dont know if i have a favorite cause it's like an endless list of possibilities- but this is up there- high up there. rock out.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

Have you ever heard better lyrics? I think not. Unless it was in another DMB song. And the emotion Dave puts into singing this song just blows me away. Especially when he sings the parts:

All the things I've been thinking
Deep inside, my friend.

So much you have given up
That I would give you back, again and again.
Oh, my love, many now hold you,

(And in this last part, just the feeling it gives when you think of that one person that has done everything for you and who you would do absolutely anything and everything for, just makes the soul smile.)
It's too bad I haven't the words to articulate the compliment that this song merits. (Those words don't exist.) The only thing that pops into my mind is ....."WOW!"

this song was playing the first time my boyfriend and i kissed...that was over six years ago...i loved this song even before this and i think dave and the whole band are the most talented group of people ever...i might be the biggest dave fan ever, its quite possible...but i think this song is about a deep, deep love...if you've ever been in love, then every lyric of this song will hit you hard, dave has a way of capturing every thought anyone has ever had in all of his songs....he's a pure genius...and he is underappreciated, he may be the best song writer that ever lived....peace and love to all....

This song is pretty sweet. I particularly like the live version of it in the Central Park Concert. Kinda interesting to note that this song probably contains the most references to substance abuse and loose sex (possible exception of Jimi Thing) of any Dave song. Still, this song ROCKS!

this is a perfect example about what happen in mind of a boy when he fall in love with a girl. i love the instrumental part, especially with tim reynolds on the guitar...

This is "our" song. My hubby-to-be introduced me to Dave in the first months of our dating... He crushed me ... in the best way I could ever imagine! and then last year he took me to see DMB live... Crushed me all over again!

A love song in the purest sense!

the best written dave song in my opinion... i tend to disagree with most though.. i like the studio version of the song better... before these crowded streets... i think that it helps build the song up better from beginning to the end... the end is such a perfect way to end a song... and i don't think that dave puts enough emphasis on it in the live version... either way... i heard it live in nashville... and it was unbelievable.. dave matthews writing ability is so superior to any artist in this era, it's ridiculous... when he finally retires... first of all i will cry, but more importantly he should be remembered as one of the best song writers of all time,/

this song makes me smile.
not the first DMB song I ever heard, but the first one I really listened to. my now-boyfriend got me into them, and this was the first one I downloaded and listened to. since then, it's basically been my favorite song. i love it.

does anyone ever think theres a hidden meaning pretaining to alcohol in this, probboly not but one day i was listening to it and it kinda popped into my head, alot like the song crackling rosie by neil diamond... just a thought... listen to it and think about it... other than that... this is my favorite dave song

this song is simply AMAZING. i have like no exact words to really describe it.
soo my boyfriend dedicated this song to me and its reeeally special. wow, goosebumps. he basically introduced me into this band and this song reminds me of our love like in every way.

its about wild sex disguised by a slower tempo "deep inside my friend" i mean i know it sounds sweet and innocent but he is really talking about pounding one of his girlfriends after a drunken drive home from the bar "drive til we get drunk"

This song has quite some meaning to me.
This guy and I were liking each other more and more everyday. and one day he told me about this song and that it was like.. his song for me. and he played it for me. and we've been together since. Yay. [ :
It seems fairly easy to understand. A guy is so in love with a girl he can't focus on anything but that. Like being drunk and high.. And he's pretty much confessing his love to this girl. Don't you think?

dave matthews is me and my boyfriends band, and crush is our song, so of course when dave came to our area last week had amazing seats, and i was seriously hoping that they would play this song, well as soon as the band came out i hard the low bass and felt tears in my eyes this song is amazing that it can have this much emotion

This song is about a person who can not get enough of the person they are in love with...like wake up up because when you are asleep next to me you are still too far kind of love. This is my song between me and my ex and it is still one of the best "love songs" ever written.

its funny reading some of these comments, especially one who mentioned its a song that makes u want to be desperately in love...i couldn't agree more.

and i remember when this song applied to me and i sang these lyrics to the one i loved. best feeling in the world to be able to mean these lyrics. i guess thats why i've been called a hopeless romantic....in love w/ love. -_-
