Lyrics for And She Was as interpreted by weezerific:cutlery

And She Was Lyrics
And she was lying in the grass
And she could hear the highway breathing
And she could see a nearby factory
She's making sure she is not dreaming

See the lights of a neighbor's house, and
Now she's starting to rise
Take a minute to concentrate
And she opens up her eyes

The world was moving, she was right there with it
And she was
The world was moving, she was floating above it
And she was
And she was

And she was drifting through the backyard
And she was taking off her dress
And she was moving very slowly
Rising up above the earth
Moving into the universe
Drifting this way and that
Not touching ground at all, and she's
Up above the yard

The world was moving, she was right there with it
And she was
The world was moving, she was floating above it
And she was

And she was glad about it, no doubt about it
She wasn't sure about what she's done
No time to think about what to tell them
No time to think about what she's done
And she was

And she was looking at herself
And things were looking like a movie
She had a pleasant elevation
She's moving out in all directions

The world was moving, she was right there with it
And she was
The world was moving, she was floating above it
And she was

And she was joining the world of missing persons And she was
Missing enough to feel alright
And she was

David Byrne wrote this song about a girl he knew in high school who dropped acid in a field by a Yoohoo factory.

It's definitely not about acid. It's about a girl who killed herself. The last two lines are pretty important.

Actually it's really about a girl on acid. Captain Byrne has said so himself. Joining the world of missing persons, missing enough to feel alright... Sounds more like acid than suicide to me.

DuckFetus is absolutely right. Definitely about a girl on acid. I hadn't heard the Yoohoo part of the story though. Truly a wonderful song.

Can anyone find any hard facts to back up the acid trip at a yoohoo factory theory? I'd like to see some actual facts on this, because remember: facts are simple and facts are straight, facts are lazy and facts are late, facts all come with points of view, facts don't do what I want them to!

Well, is this hard enough for you? :) It's from David Byrne's website (http://www.davidbyrne.com/music/cds/grown_backwards/grown_press/RaveMag.php)

From the article, which is essentially a concert review: "Byrne tells us the story behind "And She Was" (a recollection of a girl from his high school who apparently used to go hang out near the local chocolate milk factory and drop acid)."

I also read (years ago) an article where he described the girl as a "tripped out hippie chick."

Here's a transcription of what he said before performing this song on Austin City Limits:

"This is a song about a girl I knew in high school, that I went to high school in suburban Baltimore [with]... this girl I knew there who used to do LSD, and lie in a field by the Yoohoo Chocolate Drink Factory. Which she claimed was a great place for that kind of thing [laughs]... I uh, I had my doubts, but..."

Is it superficial to think that Talking Heads is a pretty similar band to Blondie? I mean I know that they are often compared because of their "New Wave" origins but sometimes David Byrne's lyrics really remind me of Debbie Harry's. Oh well, this obviously had no point. Other than wondering if other people agree/ will disagree agressively/sarcastically.

yeah definitley about yoohoo factory/acid. if you're still skeptical then check out david byrne live at union chapel where he explains it to the audience before playing it. the whole concert is very amazing, featuring his solo stuff as well as talking heads material. when he plays the talking heads stuff they all have a kind of more acoustic, world music spin to them, which works very nicely and adds a little variety to the old favorites.

I think this song is a trip even w/out taking acid. The drum beat is soooo coool, I remember learning it on the drums when I first started off. I wanted to say something really random though...I don't know why but this song reminds me of someone of my past?? I wonder why..? Hmm...weird deja vu or something...cause I know this person doesn't trip on acid. Kinda weird, huh? I wonder if that happens to other people too...

YES! grungybeatle! i was just going to post the same thing about deja vu. i was going to say it reminds me of sesame street or something... or maybe thats just the music video that does that. but, this song definitely gives me deja vu. its really strange. everytime i hear it i feel that way. i wish i could dance like david byrne.

It's about a girl doing acid behind a Yoo-Hoo factory. Come on, how cool of a premise for a song is that?!

Ok. I agree with whoever said the Yoo-Hoo factory was a cool premise for the song, but nuh-uh. I don't care if the author himself said it was about an acid trip. To me it's just about a girl living in the moment and taking everything in.

this song is about either an OBE or an astral projection experience esspeciall when he quotes, "And she was looking at herself
And things were looking like a movie
She had a pleasant elevation
She's moving out in all directions"

When I first heard it, before I knew about the acid meaning, I thought it was a love song actually. I got this image of a man watching his wife/girlfriend throughout the day. It seems like it's holding her up as some ethereal and mysterious beauty. Very surreal and awesome song.

I thought David Byrne was just joking when he told the audience about the girl in high school.
