Lyrics for Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk as interpreted by ang

Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk Lyrics
Cigarettes and chocolate milk
These are just a couple of my cravings
Everything it seems I like's a little bit stronger
A little bit thicker, a little bit harmful for me

If I should buy jellybeans
Have to eat them all in just one sitting
Everything it seems I like's a little bit sweeter
A little bit fatter, a little bit harmful for me

And then there's those other things
Which for several reasons we won't mention
Everything about 'em is a little bit stranger, a little bit harder
A little bit deadly

It isn't very smart
Tends to make one part
So brokenhearted

Sitting here remembering me
Always been a shoe made for the city
Go ahead accuse me of just singing about places
With scrappy boys faces have general run of the town

Playing with prodigal sons
Take a lot of sentimental valiums
Can't expect the world to be your Raggedy Andy
While running on empty you little old doll with a frown

You got to keep in the game
Retaining mystique while facing forward
I suggest a reading of Lessoon in Tightropes
Or urfing Your High Hopes or dios Kansas

It isn't very smart
Tends to make one part
So brokenhearted

Still there's not a show on my back
Holes or a friendly intervention
I'm just a little bit heiress, a little bit Irish
A little bit Tower of Pisa
Whenever I see ya
So please be kind if I'm a mess

Cigarettes and chocolate milk
Cigarettes and chocolate milk

How can you not relate to this song in some shape or form? It's all about wanting everything you can't have in extremes! Everything seems to be just a little bit too much of this or that...the story of my life at least...

I love Rufus Wainwright. I think he has one of the most beautiful voices out there.
"You got to keep in the game
Retaining mystique while facing forward " That is a great line. . . .

This song is so... sheepish! The beginning especially.
I also feel like it can be looked at two ways- On the more literal level, I agree with everything that's been already said.
But also feel like, he's sort of presenting himself to someone-- and asking them to excuse him if he's not all together. The line: "Whenever I see ya So please be kind if I'm a mess." Really fits in with that, don't you think? And the lines about being broken hearted kind of makes me think that he's not particularly happy with the way he is... Songs are great when you can look at them in different ways, eh?

This song is just completely about debauchery on more extreme levels (sex, drugs, alchohol), but he relates it all to very innocent-enough things like jellybeans and chocolate milk to illicit a much stronger feeling of empathy and understanding.
In doing all these things he's making his life inbalanced and maybe ruining chances he's had with people. He's only asking that you forgive his slightly greedy tendencies as human nature.

The line "A little bit Tower of Pisa" is brilliant. Leaning but still standing, that's what the lifestyle gets you (if you're lucky).

The first time I heard this song I was on a road trip half asleep and sat up going "this is my song man." Rufus is the male version of Fiona Apple, I love him.

Definately agree with spweasle, this song is so innocent in how it talks about his desires.

wow, l agree with spweasle l was gonna say, he kinda sugar coats his addictions by symbolizing them with silly little candy type things, and he's an exmethaddict if that helps, and the prodigal sons, could tie in with his endless jesus references, like the gay messiah song.

I love this song. Especially in the reprise when he slams some beats into it. I think it works well in both versions.

A little bit Tower of Pisa
Whenever I see ya
So please be kind if I'm a mess

Lovely.

i cant figure out what he means by..."cant expect the world to be your raggedy andy"... i dont know. i dont know much about the characters of raggedy ann and andy. i know that their rag dolls with red hair and a heart sewn on their chests. thats it... any one want to tell me...

i like this song a lot. we want things too much and what we want too much of is really bad for us. so true.

I think the 'Raggedy Andy' reference has to do with the idea that those Rag dolls are dolls that can be pretty used and beaten by their owners. My sister had a raggedy anne and I had a raggedy andy when we were little and they both are pretty torn up now. What Rufus is saying is that you can't use life up, you can't abuse yourself during life, like with the addictions that are mentioned above. Again, he's coating his abuse of substances and other addictions with little kid, innocence references. I think this song is pretty amazing.

But now I have a question, I get the idea of the leaning towner of Pisa, but what does he mean when he says he's 'a little bit Irish, a little bit Heiress"?

This song is so good, metaphors like I've never seen them. I agree with all that has been said here, it's so nice to see how other people look at a song and then realize what it means to yourself.

By saying he's a little bit heiress my guess is that he means he inherits certain traits and tendencies from his parents. I could be totally wrong, but this is what first entered my head. It's probably a brilliant metaphor, but at this moment I can't really figure it out.

....I don't think it's about that sort of thing at all - greed or excess, or inbalance. Could just be my opinion, but I've always perceived it to be about attachments; attaching yourself to things, or people and places.

He talks about fondness for cigarettes, chocolate milk, etc, then we come onto 'those other things'; things that the protagonist has made emotional attachments to - and are 'a little bit stranger, a little bit harder'....

The rest of the song follows suit. The 'It isn't very smart/Tends to make one part/So brokenhearted' fits as well - saying how rooting yourself in places, in people, isn't at all clever. Turning things round; perhaps it’s wiser not to love at all, than to risk subsequent loss?

A few more lines to back up my point: 'Go ahead accuse me of just singing about places/With scrappy boys faces have general run of the town' - might be my mind, but I believe our character is telling someone of the way he lives, challenging them to accuse him of tying himself to mediocre places, average people...

And then: 'Can't expect the world to be your Raggedy Andy/While running on empty'. That clinched it for me. He's asking how someone could expect the world to be their plaything, their playground, and at their disposal, while not giving anything of themselves away….

the irish/heiress bit:

well, he's irish. self explanatory.
and heiress...his parents are famous. his father loudon wainright III was incredibly famous in his time and also very rich. so he's an heir in that sense. but heirESS because let's face it, he's kinda girly :-)

"Everything it seems I like's a little bit stronger
A little bit thicker, a little bit harmful for me"

i consider this to be the thesis of the song. we all have attractions to habits or lifestyles or just thoughts that are bad for us. some of them are worse for us than other. (those things, which for several reasons we won't mention) not just because he wants to be poetic, but because we hide those guilty pleasures from the world. whenever someone really gets to know us, they have be kind, because the truth is that we're ALL a mess.

Good comments so far.

One other idea about the heiress reference: ClassAct714 is right, his parents are famous AND (less literally) it may reference the inevitability of his indulgences; the stereotyped 'princess' feels *entitled* to have *whatever* she wants. Also the Irish stereotype of drinking, etc. applies as well. Both serve as excuses for his Tower of Pisa just-barely-pulling-it-togther messiness.

The tenor of the song, being so upbeat and show-tuney can be both ironic (given the harm from addictions) and an homage to our Judy Garlands, etc., the alcohol and drug-addicted stars who numb themselves and go out on stage singing happy tunes..

Understated and brilliant I say!

Such contrast between lyrics with such depth and such an upbeat, striding tempo. It provides a song that doesn't have as black-and-white a composition as most of these days' songs do. Truly amazing in all ways.

he's singing about addiction and it's effects. whether its crystal meth, crack and heroine or cigarettes, chocolate milk and jellybeans. jellybeans- buying drugs and using it all up at one time.

"And then there's those other things
Which for several reasons we won't mention" - the addiction that are forwned upon- the songs tone and his voice gets deeper.
"Everything about 'em is a little bit stranger, a little bit harder
A little bit deadly" - side effects, hard drugs and lethal.

"Can't expect the world to be your Raggedy Andy
While running on empty you little old doll with a frown" cant expect everyone to be kind and understanding and stron for you just because youre comming down from drugs or running on empty and wanting more. "gotta keep in the game, maintaining mistique..." contuinue with every day life and not be so obvious to the audience/public.

a little bit heiress- could be saying he's a bit of a "queen"
a little bit irish- he really is part irish and feels more at home there when away from newyork than he does anywhere else in europe.

Still there's not a show on my back
Holes or a friendly intervention
I'm just a little bit heiress, a little bit Irish
A little bit Tower of Pisa

[God, I loathe friendly interventions. They usually mean a month in a nunnery-cum-rehab centre. And one has to seem grateful upon returning to the real world.]

It seems to me he's sort of pleading with his friends/loved ones not to interfere, saying that he's holding on, that he's leaning but has yet to fall, that it's basically in his blood and they should let him satisfy his harmful little cravings.

Playing with prodigal sons
Take a lot of sentimental valiums
Can't expect the world to be your Raggedy Andy
While running on empty you little old doll with a frown
You got to keep in the game
Retaining mystique while facing forward

He can't hope for the world to support his choices, he can't expect lenience when he's suffering from withdrawal, but he has to grin and bear it. And so do his friends: they need lots of sentimental Valiums when dealing with this prodigal son.
