Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?
I travel the world
And the seven seas--
Everybody's looking for something.
Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused.
(Hold your head up--Keep your head up--MOVIN' ON)
Who am I to disagree?
I travel the world
And the seven seas--
Everybody's looking for something.
Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused.
(Hold your head up--Keep your head up--MOVIN' ON)

Sweet dreams aren't real, but we allow ourselves to believe in them. Sometimes we even are living the dream, until obviously, we realize.
It's too sweet to be real. Couldn't possibly disagree with that.
Every human is made the same, essentially, wherever you go and travel to.
Everybody has wants, needs, dreams, ambitions... Everyone is looking for something. Relationship-wise, it *has* to do with interaction.
Some of them want to use you. They want a kind lover, they want attention, they want someone they can confess to, a friend... You can be that someone, but does it really matter if it's *you* or anyone else?
Some of them want to be used by you, as such. They want to have meaning to someone, they want to matter, they want to be the 'someone' of someone else.
Some of them want to abuse you, some of them want to be abused. See this however you want, people can be compulsive, it can be about a deep need, it could be sexual, it could be about feeling exploited in any possible way.
In the end, we are expendable. In the end, we just fulfill a role. There's nothing magical, unique or sweet about it.
So hold your head up, and keep your head up, don't dwell on it. Move on with life, knowing that it's how relationships are always going to be.
But inevitably, you might forget and want to believe in another sweet dream...
It has nothing at all to do with BDSM. It's all about Jim.
It's about drugs
It's about sex
It's about S&M!
It's about LIFE
It's about addictions, addictive personalities, obsessive compulsive behavior and the human condition.
At it's core is codependency, the need we feel to define who we are through people places and things
"Everybody's looking for something", some meaning to life, a purpose for their existance, and often we try to do this through others, but 'I believe' we must look for the answer within.
The song is completely non-judgemental with the key words "Who am I to disagree" - clearly implying I have also used others
I think that the key message of this song is the ultimate paradox:
That we have to accept our base desires, and to some extent immerse ourselves in them, in order to transend them.
And that this transendence is not an overnight phenomena but rather a search which will last our whole life, all we can do is to keep our heads up and keep moving on from one experience to the next.
"Sweet dreams are made of this
Who am I to disagree?"
When I think of sweet dreams, I think of fairytale endings, where the prince and princess live happily ever after. The singer is saying that this isn't all it's cracked up to be, that there are no happy endings. The line, "Who am I to disagree" is almost ironic. If this is what sweet dreams are made of, why am I complaining?
Then the next few lines, talking about being used and abused, clearly refer to people who only want to use you in a relationship (i.e. a guy dating a girl only to get into her pants, or a gold digger marrying a rich man just to get money) or people who experience domestic violence in their relationships.
I don't know if I made myself clear or if it's impossible to decipher this, but that's my take on it anyway.
