Lyrics for Not The Same as interpreted by ang

Not The Same Lyrics
You took a trip and climbed a tree
At Robert Sledge’s party
And there you stayed 'till morning came
And you were not the same after that

You gave your life to Jesus Christ
And after all your friends went home
You came down, you looked around
And you were not the same after that

(Ahhh ahhh)
You were not the same after that
(Ahhh ahhh)
You were not the same after that

You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
They come knocking at your door with this look in their eyes
You’ve got one good trick and you’re hanging on you’re hanging on...
To it

You took the word and made it heard
And eased the people’s pain and for that
You were idolised, immortalised
And you were not the same after that

Walking tall, you'd bought it all
And you were not the same after that
Till someone died on the waterslide
And you were not the same after that

You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
They come knocking at your door with this look in their eyes
You’ve got one good trick and you’re hanging on you’re hanging on to it

(ooh ooh ooh ooh)
(YOU WERE NOT THE SAME!)

You see 'em drop like flies from the bright sunny skies
They come knocking at your door with this look in their eyes
You’ve got one good trick and you’re hanging on you’re hanging on…

You’re hanging on…
You’re hanging on…

I saw ben in concert a couple months ago, he said this song was about a girl who devotes her life to following a band called Jesus Christ she first sees at a party. I think it's supposed to intertwine the whole musical spirituality/ spiritual music thing.

Well, hm. To me it seemed like some guy had a "trip" and realized he believed in God or whatever. And all of these things happened, like "someone died on the waterslide"...and the only thing he has to hold on to is that ONE moment when the sun came up and he realized there was God. That's just my opinion, though.

It sounds like he's talking about a real person and real circumstances - why else would he mention the name of the person's party (Robert Sledge). It sounds like too much detail for a fiction song.

I heard an interview with Ben where he said it was actually at Darren's party... but the lyric "Darren Jesse's party" sounded too whimpy! :) And that the song was basically about how things seem to change on one moment... one thing to spur the change...

in response to everyone, I was at his concert in DC on 6/12/02 and he said that this song was about a guy at a party he was at got tripped up on acid, climed a tree, stayed there overnight, and came down a born-again christian. No lie folks.

Yup, jfabaza is right- i saw ben two nights ago in Chicago and he told us about how a guy had come up to him after a concert recently and had asked him something like if he had a problem w/ the fact that this guy became a Christian o something... and ben said no, and that it was just a true story, exactly how jfabaza explained! :-)

I agree with "icantresist", and "jfabaza" wholeheartedly. It's funny and somethin I think Ben would do... this song's all serious/ballad-ish... kinda, but yet it's talking about a 'cid trip. Then again... I also agree with "dazed" because I've felt this myself, just the thought that your life will never go back to the way it was. Damn I love Ben Folds.

two things, kiddies: Robert Sledge... bassist from Ben Folds Five :) for those of you who didn't know. And also... you all wanna hear something really really cool??? after the "ooo's" ben folds screams "YOU WERE NOT THE SAME" in the background... it's really faint... but it's there. and it's really cool if you catch it. I think it's somewhere around 3:04 if you're looking at the time in the song. check it out

Saw him do this live, but I was really excited when I saw him on Conan. The way the backround people did the backup vocals, it was just... I dunno, something about it game me a really awesome vibe. You know, the part where he goes, "You see them drop like flies," And they go, "Yep, dropping from their bright sunny skies, yep, knocking with this look in their eyes, yep, you see them drop like flies" It was just really cool. I guess you had to see it. But yeah, you guys all got the idea. Saintdaddy, I think you were talking about Hiro's song.

As has been said before the song is about a guy who takes acid at a party and spends the night in a tree. The next morning he comes down and devotes his life to Jesus. Ben says this in concert regularly, and I believe he says it on the Ben Folds Live CD as well.

so i still don't understand the chorus... who comes to his door and what's his one good trick??? i love the song though... it has a good message about Christianity even if Ben Folds isn't Christian...

even if this song is about some kid tripping on acid and climbing a tree, it has a deeper message...
'you were not the same after that.'...
i'll quote losing lisa, 'shit just happens sometimes'... and it changes you.

by the way, i love the faint scream 'YOU WERE NOT THE SAME'. they shouldnt have drowned that out so much in the song.

stud, i think that the people who are knocking at his door are the people who "drop like flies from the bright sunny skies." the guy who got off the acid trip became some sort of healer/answer giver. people knocked on his door for answers and searching for a way for their pains to be eased. he performs his "one good trick" and makes them feel better. and because of this, he becomes really famous and gets a lot of money..."til someone died on the waterslide."...kinda weird :p
