Lyrics for Zak And Sara as interpreted by ang

Zak And Sara Lyrics
Sara spelled without an ‘h’ was getting bored
On a Peavea amp in 1984
While Zak without a ‘c’ tried out some new guitars
Playing Sara-with-no-h’s favourite song

(La da da da, la da da, la da da)
(La da da da, la da da, la da da)

Zak and Sara

Often Sara would have spells where she lost time
She saw the future, she heard voices from inside
The kind of voices she would soon learn to deny
Because at home they got her smacked

(La da da da, la da da, la da da)
(La da da da, la da da, la da da)

Zak and Sara
Zak and Sara

Zak called his dad about layaway plans
And Sara told the friendly salesman that:
“You’ll all die in your cars,
And why’s it gotta be dark?
And you’re all working in a submarine”

(Asshole)

She saw the lights, she saw the pale English face
Some strange machines repeating beats and thumping bass
Visions of pills that put you in a loving trance
That make it possible for all white boys to dance
And when Zak finished Sara’s song, Sara clapped

(La da da da, la da da, la da da)
(La da da da, la da da, la da da)

Zak and Sara
Zak and Sara

I gave these lyrics to a friend of mine the other day.... Sara-- without and 'h'. lol. She's always complaining about how everyone spells her name incorrectly.

Interesting lyrics, great music... but I don't understand the prophecying side to the lyrics - "She saw the lights, she saw the pale English face / Some strange machines repeating beats and thumping bass." The following lyrics about pills and dancing and trances means these lyrics relate to the dance scene, and Ecstasy ("pills that put you in a loving trance"). I don't know what this has got to do with the love story of Zak and Sara tho.

i think it may deal with the way people can seem normal on the surface, but then have major problems underneath- zak is talking about layaway plans (to me this means marriage), but sara is schitzophrenic (or goes to raves, but this is 1984)... the lalalala part sounds to me like how falling in love can sound- happy and a little dizzy... but i've never thought of it as a rave before i started reading these. Does anyone want to guess who the pale English face is?

I agree about how the pills = extacy. I love the song just for the way it sounds and how much fun it is, all the lyrical mysteries aside. Great Song all in all.

I think this song's about a girl who's bored with everyone & everything around her(including her boyfriend's attempts at being a musician)..and can't wait to find something new and original.

The live CD when he gets to "Submariiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine". When people describe a voice as soaring, that is it!

The first time i heard this song it was sung to me, by the guy i was try to get over. I think he sung it to me because my name is Sara, but his name is Steve. Needless to say after he sung it to me I liked him even more. I really love this song now, not because of the "special meaning" of it but because when I'm really sad I can turn it on and become "happy". Hell, I can turn on any Ben Folds song to get me in a good mood.

ok this is my in depth explanation of the song. how i look at it:
"Sara spelled without an ‘h’ was getting bored
On a Peavey amp in 1984
While Zak without a ‘c’ tried out some new guitars
Playing Sara-with-no-h’s favourite song"
---this verse is about zak at a music store (guitar center or equivelent) with his girlfriend sara. hes trying out some guitars and shes sitting on the amp getting bored and hes playing her fav. songs.

"Often Sara would have spells where she lost time
She saw the future, she heard voices from inside
The kind of voices she would soon learn to deny
Because at home they got her smacked"
---a background on her little schizophrenia problem. she sees the future and they try to shut her up and all.

Zak called his dad about layaway plans
And Sara told the friendly salesman that:
“You’ll all die in your cars,
And why’s it gotta be dark?
And you’re all working in a submarine”
---i think "layaway plans" refers to him planning to BUY the guitar and hes calling his dad for money or something. and sara starts going crazy while hes talking.

"She saw the lights, she saw the pale English face
Some strange machines repeating beats and thumping bass
Visions of pills that put you in a loving trance
That make it possible for all white boys to dance
And when Zak finished Sara’s song, Sara clapped"
--- i think thats about her seeing the future and she has visions of raves and ecstacy and all that. and zak plays her a song and she stops.

i was also thinking maybe they could be brother and sister... like parents who name their kids missing letters.. and she just follows him around and its his job to stop her.. if you get what i'm saying.

I've read Ben Folds' explanation as to what this song is about, but I'd like to say what I always thought it meant anyways. Please excuse the obvious holes in my interpretation:
I always imagined Zak and Sara living on different continents, but being around the same age. Sara was trying to make her own music, but simultaneously, Zak is sitting in England writing the songs that will someday become her favourites. Sara is psychic, or clairvoyant, or clairaudient, or something, but everybody just thinks she's crazy, so she holds it all in and goes a little berzerk one day, letting everyone know what she's seen. 1984 was obviously pre-rave culture, so she couldn't comprehend what she was seeing in her visions, but she could see Zak (I agree, as the DJ), and loved the music, even though it would be years until she actually heard it. Meh. I dunno.

This song actually has some feminist undertones if you think about it. Zak thinks he's the shit because he's playing this song on a guitar, sara is shoved into the passive girlfriend role, clapping apathetically at her boyfriends music and just sitting on his amp, obviously against her will. The irony is that Sara is the one who can see the future of music (IE techno, ecstasy) she is the one with the true vision. She's imagining the future of the music industry in her mind but she doesn't say anything, she simply applauds her boyfriend who is playing a song that he didn't even write.

facedownowls, I really like your explanation. Looking at the lyrics again...that fits for the most part. Of course, I couldn't find the link to Ben's explanation on the site-maybe someone could help me?
