Lyrics for Hands as interpreted by whitknee

Hands Lyrics
If I could tell the world just one thing
It would be that we're all OK
And not to worry 'cause worry is wasteful
And useless in times like these
I won't be made useless
I won't be idle with despair
I will gather myself around my faith
For light does the darkness most fear

My hands are small, I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken

Poverty stole your golden shoes
But it didn't steal your laughter
And heartache came to visit me
But I knew it wasn't ever after

We'll fight, not out of spite
For someone must stand up for what's right
'Cause where there's a man who has no voice
There ours shall go singing

My hands are small I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken

In the end only kindness matters
In the end only kindness matters

I will get down on my knees, and I will pray
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray
I will get down on my knees, and I will pray

My hands are small I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken

My hands are small I know
But they're not yours, they are my own
But they're not yours, they are my own
And I am never broken
We are never broken

We are God's eyes
God's hands
God's mind
We are God's eyes
God's hands
God's heart
We are God's eyes
God's hands
God's eyes
We are God's hands
We are God's hands

This is such a wise song. It's one of my favourites. I think she wants to say that we are responsible for ourselves and what another one thinks about us doesn't matter (--> they're not yours, they are my own) And that you can't posess a person. It says to me that life isn't senseless, that everything has a meaning in a sort of plan... It tells you to relativate bad things that happen to you, "it's just a moment, this time will pass" as U2 sings

I think this song means that we are in charge of the world. Of what happens, of what doesn't happen. Like in the part that says "We are God's hands". And when she says, "My hands are small I know, but they're not yours they are my own. " I think that part means that she's only concerned with the things she needs to do, her part in life.

I know that this song is based off of a poem from Pablo Neruda's book of poetry The Captain's Verses. The poem is called Poverty.

This song hits home on so many different levels.

It's especially powerfully when accompanying the pictures of Rachel Joy Scott and other Columbine victims in the Rachel's Challenge presentation.

But it also makes us realize that there is something more powerful out there, something more meaningfull. I'm on the shorter side, and that's become sort of, my trade mark....and it doesn't bother me half as much as it used to...especially when listening to a lyric like:

"my hands are small I know
but they're not your's, they are my own"

you've got to love it.

Perhaps she wrote this song when she was sad... And she wanted at that moment to say to the world, I'm myself, and I can!! do it, I can make it myself. Everyone is unique and should realise that. Don't give up hope! so then I agree on what dblbassmike says:)

I made the mistake of singing this song on the night of September 11th, 2001, at a karaoke club! I started getting teary, at the lyric "In the end, only kindness matters," I started getting teary. -By the time I had finished the song, nearly everybody in the club was crying (unless they were drunk). Now, everytime, I hear it I think of 9/11, and the old saying 'All gave some, and some gave all,' and how so how so many lives were lost, trying to save others' lives, -which is, by far, the biggest, greatest, act of kindness in the universe. Jewel rocks!

Thanks Ms. Darkk, I agree. The first time I heard this song was on 9/11/2001. I remember where I was, driving home from work in total disbelief. And I remember how unifying this song was. As individuals, our hands may be small. But, as a whole, we can all become something that serves the greater good. And yes, we are in God's Hands.

This song is Jewel at her best. The whole Spirit album is probably just about her best work - if you have any other Jewel albums make sure to give Spirit a listen too. Although like most of her music it's rather melancholy and could use some pick-me-up songs, but that's Jewel for you.

i think that this song means that kindness is an expression of reverence towards God, the line "we are God's hands/eyes"

the reason we are alive today is because of other people's kindness, and so we have a responsibilty to act kindly towards others who need our help, even if our 'hands are small', they can always do something good.

When I hear this song I think of poverty and other stuff going on in the world but now it takes on a different meaning.
It is in this presentation I saw in school today called Rachel's Challenge. Its about Rachel Joy Scott and she was the first student killed in the Columbine Shootings in '99. She wanted to start a chain reaction of kindness and they played this song in the closing video of the presentation. Rachel traced her hands and wrote inside of the outline that "These hands belong to Rachel Joy Scott and one day they will touch millions of people's lives" and she kept a bunch of diaries and on the back of her last diary that was w/ her when she got shot it said something like "I will not be judged as average" so now whenever i hear the song I think of it. esp w/ the lyrics
"And I am never broken
In the end only kindness matters" b/c thats what Rachel wanted her chain of reaction to do. spread kindness.
You should all check it out

i think the song's just about when you're thinking you're in trouble and the world is a terrible place and tragedy has struck... she's saying you can always do something, however small your hands are, and 'in the end only kindness matters'.

it just shows that God is out there.....i mean God can be interpretad in alot of different ways . just when i was trying to find an inspiration to write words based on social segregation and minorities and all these negative views in society consdering that im a minority myself .....i skimmed through my songs.....and just clicked on this unexpectedly ...coincidence...it just shows how God can work in mysterious ways .......soon to be one of my favorite songs .

It seems to me to say that we should not attempt to change anything, that we should leave it to God.

And the lyrics prove only that the songwriter had little to say on the subject, and could only say the same thing over and over.
