Follow where Mary goes
Cherish the things she knows
Says if I change my stride
Then I'll fly
She makes me want to die
Change my stride
Then I'll fly
Look to the sun
See me in psychic pollution
Walking on the moon
How could you dare?
Who do you think you are?
You're insignificant
A small piece, an ism
No more no less
You try to learn the universe
Can't even converse in human verse
You know its ironic smoking hydroponic
She makes me want to die
Change my stride
Then I'll fly
She makes me want to die
Can't even converse in universe
(but leave out fifth line: She makes me want to die)
Cherish the things she knows
Says if I change my stride
Then I'll fly
She makes me want to die
Change my stride
Then I'll fly
Look to the sun
See me in psychic pollution
Walking on the moon
How could you dare?
Who do you think you are?
You're insignificant
A small piece, an ism
No more no less
You try to learn the universe
Can't even converse in human verse
You know its ironic smoking hydroponic
She makes me want to die
Change my stride
Then I'll fly
She makes me want to die
Can't even converse in universe
(but leave out fifth line: She makes me want to die)

he's like some kid and Martina trying to raise her.. it's a well known phenomenon for Tricky listeners.. guess it's valid for many relationships.... not mine anyway :)
.
So she is actually singing about herself while Tricky is in the backround, it sounds like he is whispering the words in her ear before she sings them.
Great song. If its about marijuana, well, that makes it even more pertinent to my life probably! I hadn't thought of that meaning before, but then I hadn't googled the lyrics yet, either. I did think that I heard Hydroponic in there, though, but I wasn't yet sure...
it's a great song
one interpretation which i only thought of a short while back is that this whole song may in fact be about marijuana. "she" being marijuana. it seems to work.
"then i'll fly"/"walking on the moon" are common feelings associated with getting high, floating away.
"you try to learn the universe/can't even converse in uni-verse" one of my favourite lines because it is so true. 'stoners' are truly innovators & they come up with some of the most amazing philosophies, but sometimes being stoned makes your conversation structure disjointed & slurred & all over the place.
"follow where mary goes" was what set off this instant mary-jane, marijuana connection in me.
was just a though though…
regardless of what this song is actually about, it is so tragically brilliant in its remote dance with simplicity that i can’t help but become entranced every time i listen to it.
