You are:
Eighteen year-old girl
Who live in small city of Japan
And you heard me on the radio
About one year ago
And you wanted to know
All about me
And my hobbies
My favorite food
And my birthday

Why are you so far away from me?
I need help
And you're way across the sea
I could never touch you
I think it would be wrong
I've got your letter
You've got my song

They don't make stationery like this where I'm from
So fragile, so refined
So I sniff and I lick your envelope
And fall to little pieces
Every time I wonder:
What clothes you wear to school
I wonder how you decorate your room
I wonder how you touch yourself
And curse myself for being across the sea

At 10, I shaved my head
And tried to be a monk
I thought the older women would like me if I did
You see, ma
I'm a good little boy
It's all your fault, momma
It's all your fault!

Goddamn, this business is really lame
I gotta live on an island to find the juice
So you send me your love from all around the world
As if I could live on
Words and dreams and a million screams
Oh, how I need a hand in mine to feel...

General Comment:I like the first two Weezer albums the best because there is so much feeling put into them. It seems like Rivers is holding back in all of the other albums. My favorite albums are the ones where the artists really put a part of themselves into their music.

General Comment:This song actually isn't metaphorical at all, he really did recieve a letter from a fan from japan who really liked him after hearing a song off the blue album. And he really did obsess over her for quite some time. It's straightforward. That is true.

it's rumored that in college he ran into this girl (she came over for school) and she didn't recognize him but he knew who she was, and he was too freaked out to introduce himself. I don't know that i beleive that. but I've heard several people say it.

General Comment:Pinkerton didn't do well because it wasn't as commercial. It's darker, and deals with some intensely creepy awkwardness, which is why it has such a cult following.

Anyway, it's about him getting some broken english letter from a Japanese fan. He becomes emotionally attached to her even though he's never met her, imagines her masturbating, sniffs at her envelope, etc, and ends up writing this song about her.

Weezer really took off after the blue album, and in the song he attaches himself to the fan because he's longing for something more.

"As if I could live off words and dreams and a million screams, oh, how I need a hand in mine to feel. Why are you so far away from me?"

General Comment:This song creeps me out, but I love it.

I agree with the masturbation theory. The song starts out slowly with him looking at the letter and thinking about the girl that sent it. He begins fantasizing about her. Licking the envelope . . . wanting to touch her . . . thinking about her touching herself (masturbating to him like he is to her --- I have your letter, you have my song)

The end of the song is the orgasm. You can feel the intensity. A million screams stands out.

Throughout the song you can feel the rising sensations to the impending climax. The way his thoughts change from innocence to fantasy to guilt to anger . . .

Maybe he wrote this song for the Japanese fan to mastubate to . . . the way he uses her letter?

General Comment:Good explanations so far.. to me this song speaks to the to the person who defines him/herself by their achievements. It's about someone who has thought that their worth could be measured only by how "well" they do in life. The author has obviously come to the realization that this can't be, that the struggle for perfection is in vain, and not worth the pain it brings to the individual. He doesn't think that striving for perfection is realistic. He wants to be able to connect with others and fears his desire for perfection will get in the way. If he continues on this path, he will become consumed by this desire and become detatched from his life and the people in it. He didn't realize how difficult this course would be and wishes that people would take him seriously when he expresses his pain. His journey to perfection has taken him to a place where he is alone and he has no joy. His mind is in turmoil trying to figure things out and his thoughts of giving up (possibly suicide?) are tempting him more an more. He feels as though nothing can release him of his misery, no one can rescue him from his feeling of inadequacy and detachment. These feelings are all he has. He deeply regrets starting on this quest for perfection and acknowledges it was the worst mistake he ever made. He knows that the pain and pressure will never end and questions if he really knew that to begin with.
