Lyrics for Say It Ain't So as interpreted by oofus

Say It Ain't So Lyrics
Somebody's Heine'
is crowdin' my icebox
somebody's cold one
is givin' me chills
Guess I'll just close my eyes
Flip on the tele'
Wrestle with Jimmy
Something is bubbling
Behind my back
The bottle is ready to blow
Say it ain't so
Your drug is a heartbreaker
Say it ain't so
My love is a lifetaker
I can't confront you
I never could do
That which might hurt you
So try and be cool
When I say
This way is a waterslide away from me
That takes you further every day
So be cool

Dear Daddy, I write you
In spite of years of silence
You've cleaned up, found Jesus
Things are good or so I hear
This bottle of Steven's
Awakens ancient feelings
Like father, stepfather
The son is drowning in the flood

I'm pretty sure this song is about his fater's drinking problems and his own tendency to follow in his dad's footsteps. I know there is more to it than that though, anyone got a better idea?

this song isn't about Rivers being haunted by his father's drinking.Rivers' dad doesn't even drink! They were hippies and strict vegetarians. This song is about Rivers being petrified of alcohol. So he didn't drink till he was like 21

i think this song is definetl about a guy whos dad was an alchoholic, even if it ist eally abour rvers experiance. and i think that th habit rubbed off on the son and he drinks b/c of some girl he loves that doesnt love him back or at least the habbit rubbed off on theson ( like father, step father, the son is drowningin the flood) but my opinon is possibly wrong. whatdo u think

I think the song is about a son who remembers daily about a father's drinking problem. I also think that the mother remarried another alcoholic and that he was tormented by the memories of both father figures. Rivers might have written this song about a childhood friend.......

it can't be about the fear of alcohol, because of the end and the chorus. they definitely show signs of a fear of the alcoholic father who probably distanced himself from his son. ("this way is a waterslide away from me which takes you further everyday")

this is a beutiful song, the "Like father, stepfather
The son is drowning in the flood" bit always sends a shiver down my spine. A more grown-up song, on what is pretty much a nice, childish but incredebly addictive album

I always thought it said "...is a waterslide away from me the tanks are fuller everyday" (so be cool!)
Am I wrong? I mean, it doesn't seem to really detract from the interpretation of the song. What say you?

I think everyone hears lyrics a little differently. Maybe their liner notes don't have lyrics included because they WANT people to hear it differently? Just a thought.

"It's such a complicated story, way too complex to write a song about. I should never have done it. I was really afraid of alcohol at the time. I didn't drink till I was 21, not even a sip. I was petrified of alcohol. "Say it ain't So" was about when I was 16. I opened up the refrigerator and I saw a can of beer. All of a sudden I made the connection that my step-father was leaving...because my father started drinking when he left my mother."

straight from the man himself. so quit yer whinin'

I don't know if this is ironic or funny or what but I alway associate this song with the first time I got drunk(my friends were playing it). I found it to be addictive afterwards and I listen to it practically every day. Its a damn shame that music can't be more like this.

Actually his dad did drink... and he also had a stepdad... his dad was a dead beat dad that him and his bro. Leaves hardly ever saw and when they did it wasn't pleasant. That's what this song is about. Kind of a comparison to his stepdad.

By far, best weezer song, Rivers emtion in the lyrics and his feeling in the vocals, its great, the story behind this song, ehich i believe to be addiction (alcohol problems) is amazing for him to open up and express it. and he does it so well!

I seem to remember reading something fairly close to excerpt from sweetsuz from above, so i tend to lean toward that theory. I was SO glad to hear this song when it came out, as it crushed the notion that they were a novelty band. This is one of those songs that just sound REALLY good cranked up loud as hell!
