Everybody wants you to be special
And everybody wants you to be high
They throw you down a rope when you're in
Trouble, baby
Screamin', "save me"
Then they charge you with the rescue blues

And everybody wants to see you suffer
They know that you need the pain so much
They throw you up a rope when you're too high
To cruise, baby
Lord, you lose lady
Then they charge you with the rescue blues

And everybody wants to see you fall
That's why they always love to get you high
And everybody knows you need the pain
So much, lady
Well, keep in touch, baby
Just don't charge me with the rescue blues

General Comment:I think the song is about how people's expectations and their actions are at contrast. They all want you to soar "to be high" but they never help you stay aloft, they only "throw you down a rope" when you're so far down you cant see the top. And then, in contrast, if you soar to high, they drag you back down "throw you up a rope". the first two lines of the last verse contain the whole meaning. "Everybody wants to see you fall. they why they love to get you high"

My Interpretation:I think the phrase "keep in touch baby just dont charge me with the rescue blues" means "dont charge me with the hangover" probably refering to drugs, get me high but dont let me fall..

"Everybody knows you need the pain so much, lady" ("lady" refering to the drug, "you need the pain so much", after gettin high always comes the fall or the "pain" pain is always a partner of the high)

General Comment:The first song by Ryan Adams that hit me like a ton of bricks. Had a live version of it... really listened to every word with it having a lot of weight in each one. Helped me through a ton.

General Comment:I think anyone that has ever been in a codependent relationship or struggle with addictions would find a different meaning for this song. Everyone wants you to be the life of the party then when you cross the line and they have to rescue you they charge you with the rescue blues. I just see this song as something different.

General Comment:maybe it's just me but i dont see the music critics connections......

i think he is saying that humanity likes to see others suffer, because it makes each of us feel better about ourselves when we see ourselves as better than others.........so then, he is saying that his rescue, as in his lifting of someone else from despair or whatever is getting them down will cause that person to be something greater, to be happy, to rise above others. This then would lead to a scorn from others, which would then circle back around to the blues that the other person originally felt.

he is saying to someone else something like "ya i can help you, i can save you, but don't blame me for what happens afterword"
