Well nighttime let her through
Yeah I'm talking to you
I want to see her
Precious little thing

With eyes that dance around without their clothes
So buy a pretty dress
Wear it out tonight
For anyone you think could out do me

Or better still be my winding wheel
Cause I feel just like a map
Without a single place to go of interest
And I'm further north than south

If I could shut my mouth she'd probably like this
So buy a pretty dress
And wear it out tonight
For all the boys you think could out do me
Or better still be my winding wheel

Be my winding wheel
Well the children laugh and sing a song that ushers in her driving rain

And I'm standing in the station like some old record waiting on a train
So buy a pretty dress
Wear it out tonight
For anyone you think could out do me
Or better still be my winding wheel

Be my winding wheel

General Comment:Here's a guy who's drifiting through life and needs a little inspiration, a little excitement, which is offered by the girl. She's a potential spark for a guy's who is waiting around to be played, for something to happen. But he's too lethargic a guy to act - either she'll go off and play with someone better, or she'll stir up into action.

General Comment:Hi all,, while this song leads you to think about a breakup...get deeper into the lyrics... It starts right out telling you about the birth at night...his little girl...yes I want to see her. the taunt at the girlfriend is just that. the last verse refers to the children as she is growing up. in the secong verse he refers to further north than south trying to let his little girl know where he is...

I thought this link may help those wondering "what the fuck is a winding wheel". I remember my grandfather had a pocket watch that didn't work and he said it was because the "winding wheel" went to hell. Have fun! Great tune

General Comment:Ok heres what i think. She doesn't think he's good enough for her. So she goes out looking for something better. By him saying "so buy a pretty dress wear it out..." he's basically humoring her, he knows that he's the best shes gonna find and that they are perfect for each other. The better still part just means safe yourself the trouble and just stick with me.

General Comment:I am with Hunter on this one. The girl is his "winding wheel", as in a wheel of fortune that totally controls how he feels, that labilizes him.

General Comment:You're so fucking far away from being right, bugoff, it's not even funny. A "winding wheel" is a metaphor for something or someone that/who leads you, but it's constantly changing paths.

General Comment:The thing on the back of old toys that you turn to wind up. what else would you call it? He's saying "be the thing that keeps me going."

General Comment:Legend has it that when Ryan met Bob Dylan for the first time, Dylan asked him: "That song, 'My Winding Wheel'... what's it about? What the f**k is a winding wheel"? :D
