Lyrics for Pinch Me as interpreted by ojms

Pinch Me Lyrics
It's the perfect time of year
Somewhere far away from here
I feel fine enough I guess
Considering everything's a mess
There's a restaurant down the street
Where hungry people like to eat
I could walk, but I'll just drive
It's colder than it looks outside

It's like a dream you try to remember but it's gone, then you
Try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn when you
Try to see the world beyond your front door
Take your time cos the way I rhyme's gonna make you smile when you
Realize that a guy my size might take a while just to
Try to figure out what all this is for

It's the perfect time of day
To throw all your cares away
Put the sprinkler on the lawn
And run through with my gym shorts on
Take a drink right from the hose
And change into some dryer clothes
Climb the stairs up to my room
Sleep away the afternoon

It's like a dream you try to remember but it's gone, then you
Try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn when you
Try to see the world beyond your front door
Take your time cos the way I rhyme's gonna make you smile when you
Realize that a guy my size might take a while just to
Try to figure out what all this is for

Pinch me, pinch me
'Cause I'm still asleep
Please God, tell me
That I'm still asleep

On an evening such as this
It's hard to tell if I exist
Pack the car and leave this town
You'll notice that I'm not around
I could hide out under there
I just made you say underwear
I could leave but I'll just stay
All my stuff's here anyway

It's like a dream you try to remember but it's gone, then you
Try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn when you
Try to see the world beyond your front door
Take your time cos the way I rhyme's gonna make you smile when you
Realize that a guy my size might take a while just to
Try to figure out what all this is for

Try to figure out what all this is for
Try to see the world beyond your front door
Try to figure out what all this is for

I'm not a big BNL fan but I like this song. I like the humor in it, the video for this was pretty cool too. I agree with previous explanations, it's about coping with depression.

this song is great. it just makes you want to lay out and do nothing. It's meaning is deep, but the sound just makes you smile. it's great and maybe one of my favorite BNL songs

this song is about the isolation of being in a new environment or being in a place with no friends or family. Not all is bad about being in a new situation, you have more time to recognize the details in your environment and to spend time with yourself which is not always a bad thing, but time moves slower and you wonder whether anyone recognizes or cares about your existence.

"Pinch Me" was, I think, the last song to be written for the record. I wrote it up on the third floor of my house, just feeling a bit melancholy; sometimes you look around, and things are great, and you just kind of feel down, and there's no reason for you to — you have an inability to appreciate your surroundings sometimes. That's what I was trying to get at, some of the boredom of pristine suburbia and the potential lying under every yawn.

I had a basic framework in mind, but couldn't finish it off, really. It was a hard one to write, because of the sort of quick singing/rapping; I was so scared people were gonna go, "Oh, it's like 'One Week,'" which it isn't. But I was so paranoid people would think that that I almost didn't write it. ---Ed Robertson

I think it's about a guy feeling trapped within his own life. He tries to accomplish something but always finds an excuse(Try to scream but it only comes out as a yawn/When you try to see the world beyond your front door). He's doing everything half-assed because he keeps waiting for some miracle to happen.

I don't know how some of the post-ers don't appreciate this song. I mean, Barenaked Ladies is known to be pretty much all over the charts and I think this upbeat-sounding, depressing-lyriced song breaks the mold. It's about kinda being depressed and not knowing really what to do with themselves.

Ok, first of all as a recommendation to SongFacts.net: Make it just a bit more complicated to make an account so that the thinking impaired do not make dumbass comments taking up the page.
A note to one of the above: "honestyormystery" (which makes no fucking sense to begin with)...Are you seriously that much of an uninformed dolt that you actually think that is funny? I heard that underwear joke in kindergarten and laughed for about three seconds. Or perhaps you think it funny that grown men are telling that joke in one of their songs and you are merely laughing at them, not with them? For your own good, I hope it is the latter and if it is not, then you deserve a 2"x4" up your ass. And to NoThankYou!...what the fuck? A warning to anyone who has not yet read this asshole's remark or to anyone who just has within the past five minutes (any more than that and you are next to hopeless)...please do not think about what this douche-rocket wrote or blood will shoot out of your nuts (or, just based on the dumbass comments that most of you so kindly share, your vagina). And just a word to the rest of you uninformed mullets, please do not write comments to eachother that just waste my time, please just leave your interpretation of the song and go play with yourself. You suck.

I will admit that I made a mistake on my previous comment and I will own up to it but I will not take full credit for it...I was still put under a spell of stupidity my this asshole "honestyormystery" and I, because about a third of my brain cells had exploded, wrote "SongFACTS.net" as opposed to"SongMEANINGS.net". This is just proof of the danger of this website and of reading every comment you see. So to lower the risk of this, do not read any more comments written by "honestyormystery". There is a reason that the creators of this website put the name of who posted the proceeding comment before the comment itself, and that is so that the victims of these potentially fatal comments can warn others before it is too late as I am doing now. However, because of my ridiculous amount of brain power, I will not pass on, and fortunately for all of you because after reading any of my comments, you will become a bit smarter (or a bit less dumb). Please take heed to my warnings and save whatever brain cells you may have left (for some of you it is too late). Thank you. You suck.

i liek to listen to this song cause it reminds me of my boyfriend. I know it has nothing to do w/ teh song but in the summer I went over to his house and we offered to help his mom water the flowers but it turns out instead we ended up drinking from the house and squirting each other then running through the sprinklers. We were soaked so we went up to his room and he let em borrow his sisters old clothes while mine dryed and we sat on the bed and talked until we fell alseep and we slept from about 1-5:30 "sleep away teh afternoon" And teh "pinch me" part just reminded me of how perfect it seemed

Hmm. I suppose it could be about having things screwed up, or going kinetically numb, but I always just saw it as a lazy sunday sort of thing (the common phrase, not the SNL sketch). You simply get rid of the worries that the weekday grind cause for you, but, being Sunday, there's that nagging knowledge in the back of your mind that you gotta get back to it the next day. And with a side of feeling unimportant, and wondering if anyone would notice if you missed work the next day.

I get that a lot, but this song is great for snapping you out of it if you feel that way. It just makes you realize that tiem spent dreading the next day is time wasted.

Dear blueowl92 ,

just thought I'd let you know that you became one of those people that you hate. You just wasted two minutes of my life and said absolutely nothing about the song, I hope you're happy, I think that my IQ actually dropped several points while reading your post.

moving on, I thought that this song was really just supposed to be funny when I first heard it. I had to listen to it several times to actually get what it was supposed to be about, that doesn't usually happen to me, did this happen to anyone else?

I love this song--the music and the lyrics are really in sync. It's about trying to get out of the rut of everyday life, but just not having the motivation to do it. It's like living in a half-conscious dream world--you really try to care, but you just can't. I think most of us live like this. "I could walk, but I'll just drive. It's colder than it looks outside" once again, failing to make even the smallest change in habits. Then at the end, talking about getting out and really shaking things up, almost doing it, but then saying forget it (I could leave but I'll just stay. All my stuff's here anyway). Great job capturing the suffocating blahse of everyday life.

just got back from seeing the Ladies in concert. This is the most upbeat song about chronic depression i've ever heard. Ladies really know how to entertain and have fun--hell they are one fun one band

Put the sprinkler on the lawn/
And run through with no clothing on/
Take a drink right from the hose/
And change into my sister's clothes/

This is a great song... the lyrics are much deeper than one would guess based on face value. That's BNL's style.
