Lyrics for If Only as interpreted by OwnPersonalDemon

If Only Lyrics
If it gets you down well then I'll take it
If it gets you up well I don't want it
It let you down so broken hearted
If it gets you down well then I want it

If only we're nothing at all

So blow our mind and make it lazy
Those long long days with no escaping
I hold the wheel to let it go
Don't wanna stop, don't wanna know
If it gets you down, well just don't blame me

If only we're nothing at all

I think this song is about wanting to escape reality and just completely letting go (in Josh Homme's case that would be via drugs). The song also expresses the strange feeling of actually wanting to be a nobody and just having no connections, so you could exist in peace. One of my favorite by QOTSA.

I've always felt that this song was specifically about the downers in the world of drugs... painkillers, valium, that sort of thing. It sounds like he prefers to have his mind blown and make him "lazy", rather than get "up" on something else, like speed or coke. For those long hard days where the boredom is overwhelming, it's the only way to do it. Who knows, I don't, it's just my interpretation. What a delicious song.

VelvetEyes is right. I can relate to this song a lot too, as I used to enjoy taking painkillers often. The line "blow our mind and make it lazy" is a clear reference to downers, as is the very straightforward "if it gets you down"

Like others have said, I think this is about using downers as an escape valve. Instead of trying to get perked up on stimulants, just embracing whatever's bothering you and going with the flow of it.

I thought it was "If only 'only' were nothing at all", as in, he wished there were no downsides.

I hate this version. The best version of this song "If Only Everything" is on the split EP with Kyuss, It just sounded better,

Opiates..."if only" you could use them for "those long long days of no escaping"...but the truth is they "let you down so broken hearted"...and you "dont wanna stop, and ya dont wanna know"..the baggage that comes with such a blissful hi.."if only" thats all it was a hi... .perhaps he works hard with his band and life to hold it together just so he can get hi once and a while or as he puts it"blow your mind and make it lazy".. "hold the wheel just to let go"....anyways just what it sounds like to me..just my opinion
