Lyrics for Exodus as interpreted by cailin

Exodus Lyrics
my black backpack stuffed with broken dreams
twenty bucks should get me through the week
never said a word of discontentment
thought it a thousand times but now i'm leaving home

here in the shadows
i'm safe, i'm free
i've nowhere else to go
but i cannot stay where i don't belong

two months pass by and it's getting cold
i know i'm not lost...i'm just alone
but i won't cry, i won't give up, i can't go back now
waking up is knowing who you really are

here in the shadows
i'm safe, i'm free
i've nowhere else to go
but i cannot stay where i don't belong

in the shadows
i'm safe, i'm free
i've nowhere else to go
but i cannot stay here

oh, show me the shadow where true meaning lies
So much more dismay in empty eyes

I wish I lived in Little Rock!! Evanescence's following has made it all the way to TN! I love their stuff! This song, to me, tells the story of a girl who leaves all that she knows to find happiness and will soon realise that happiness lies in what she left... A little artist license taken, yes, but I like to see beyond the song, ya know?

it almost seems like the person of this story has a problem with her family and forced to live on the street and only has 20 bucks in her pocket

Amazing Song. If you ever get the chance to go see Evanescence i strongly suggest you do so. They are completely Amazing. There music is both lifting and spiritual. This song is mainly about a girl just leaving stuff behind and trying to move forward...day by day...

exodus means to depart and it goes on from there i don't know what she means but she does one hell of a job writing and making these songs great.

i really love this song...
i assume, from the title..

that it's all about leaving something that isn't right for you, but has been a huge part of your life? perhaps a relationship, or drugs, although neither of those seem to fit into the lyrics perfectly...
perhaps a career.
It's as if it's somwhere she's spent so long in, that it feels safe, even though it's the worst thing she's had to bear... so she has to get away, although it will be hard?

but, i really could be totally wrong!
great song anyway, one of my favourites!

I love this song. I ran away one time and heard this song on the run. I stopped at my friend's house and she played it for me.... it made a really good point; "Waking up is knowing who you really are" there are too many people who haven't woken up yet.

This song is awesome. I used to have it but my hard drive died and I lost the mp3. Say, can anyone email me the mp3 at duskwraithe@yahoo.com? Cause that would rock so hard ;p

I tihnk "Exodus" is a beautiful song. It is about giving up on the people who wronged you, said you were too different. So you run away without realizing what you're doing and still end up alone, cold, and lurking in the shadows forever.

Well, my interpretation is that it's about a girl who's running away from home. For years she's lived with people who can't accept her, hiding who she really is, but finally she's had enough, so she packs it all up in her black backpack and leaves with nothing more than twenty bucks. Even though she ends up on the street and alone, she feels that situation is better than being back at home, unable to really be herself.

Or something along those lines. Yeah.

ok, i absolutely love evanescence, but this is probably one of my least favorite songs of theirs. The music and instruments isnt very good in this if you ask me. But hey, a subpar evanescnece song is still better than most everything else...

It sounds like a song about a woman who had problems with her family so she ran away, but she found out that she should've stayed.

i fuckin love this song. it's one of their best, besides "missing" and "my immortal." i think that this song means that amy ran away from home, knowing it wasn't worth staying. she had her backpack filled with broken dreams, which i guess means that she was filled with nothing anymore becuz all of her dreams were destroyed by people she thought she loved. does anyone want to know what the rest of the song means?

By the way, the ending goes "Show me the shadow, where true meaning lies, so much more dismay in empty eyes" at least I think.

Now this song in my opinion is about how someone, I'm not saying it's Amy, gave up on how he or she wanted to live their life. So one day that person decided that they couldn't take it anymore so left to pursue their own dreams and find themselves. Now, who exactly this person is I'm not sure, and I think that maybe that person found what they were looking for.
