That's what this song always makes me think about..
"You wear the mask of all you long to be" – This line supports the notion of a fake, and the line that follows: "I know who you really are..." shows that the facade isn't all that good.
I believe this song is a criticism of the person, basically telling them that they are alone, and because of this facade, they have really no options but to remain trapped in the lie, this is crystallised when Amy says:
"but where will you go
with no one left to save you from yourself?
you can't escape the truth"
I also think that this song is Amy telling someone to free themselves from a social mould, and to actually become their true selves.
This song, at the moment, resonates deeply with me, as a friend of mine is currently occupying the same position as the subject of this song...
The first part of the song seems to be addressing someone, 'where will you go?'. It seems as though the addressee has cut off all ties, like a lie that has gone too far and pushed them away from reality. This, therefore, would make them 'scared to death to face reality' The addresser seems to realise this, 'i know who you really are'. The addresser is trying to stop the addressee from losing everytone and everything, 'you can't abandon everyone'
The 'I am so sick of speaking words that no-one understands' seems to come from the person being addressed. They are trying to tell people that they were a facade but people just don't realise it. The line, 'is it clear enough that you can't live your whole life all alone' seems to be coming from the addresser again, saying that the person being addressed cannot live alone, they need to ask for help. The addressee then replies 'I can hear you when you whisper, but you can't even hear me screaming' after this line Amy sings 'where will you go' with so much passion it seems to be telling the addresse that they are wrong, they need help.
Anyway, this song is great and has helped me through a lot.
