anyways...since this IS songmeaning.net i would have to say what i think it means...

its about death...about a person that just lost someone very close and is trying to cope with the loss. she keeps thinking that that person is still there but they dont want them to be there...yet they do. i also think that the person might have gotten into a fight or something with the person that passed away right before they passed away and they keep thinking and thinking about it.

"but though your still with me, i've been alone all along"

this sentence shows that she still thinks about the person and feels him or her in her heart and in her mind...but then she realizes that that person is dead and can not come back.

well yeah...thats what i think it means...

Froggies -- The song that was based off of a story was Haunted =]. My Immortal was written by Ben when he was 15, it was Ev's first song, back before Amy and Ben even called themselves Evanescence.

Somewhere on Evboard (actually, it was a thread from Katya's cousin, but I'm not sure if it's still there or not), Amy said that in the My Immortal video she plays the part of a ghost, which is why she never touches the ground. I thought that was spiffy =].

This song makes me cry everytime I hear it. It Reminds of a situation I have with A good friends of mine. This is exactly how I would feel if he died, which I know it's going to happen soon. : (. This song is absolutely beautiful. It satifies every single emotion in my body.

As well I doubt it's about a break up song. I believe that it's a song she was writing in memory of A very good friend of hers, maybe even a lover who passed.
" i held your hand through all of these years but you still have...all of me" -those lyrics suggest it. Also The beginning of the chorus suggest that who ever she is singing about & her had alot of memories together.
"but if you have to leave

and it won't leave me alone" -That makes me believe that whoever she is singing about passed away and still haunts her mind.

I never got the idea that this song was about a breakup. The lyrics more befit a relationship that should have ended a long time ago but hasn't. "I'm so tired of being here . . . if you have to leave, I wish that you would just leave . . . though you're still with me, I've been alone all along." The song, to me, is about staying in a loveless relationship because you hope things will eventually heal (even though don't seem to be doing so), or because you don't want to be alone (even though you have been all along).

I just rediscovered this song two days ago. I was watching "Daredevil" and suddenly i heard "My Immortal" playing in one of the scenes. I had forgotten the song because I'm not the big Evanescence fan, but this song really toughed me. It's a beautiful version playing in the movie. The strings really does justice to the song.

Greenspider, do you mean there are actually *two* people in the song, and the chorus is Christ's voice while the rest is Amy's? It's an interesting interpretation; I don't think I've ever come across it before.

Athanatis, try listening to 'My Immortal' as a prayer (could there be a clue in the title?). Your explanation still fits, but in an inside-out sort of way: What if the lover was Christ? Once, Amy invested her whole life in him. Now her faith is gone and she feels devastated, betrayed, empty: she had got it all wrong from the beginning and had lived a lie - she had never really loved him.
And yet, he's still there for her. And somehow she still can't let him go, because he'll always be there - waiting, loving.

I think the key to understanding this song is that amazing verse near the end...

I think there's someone she really loves and cares about, almost like how a mother loves a child, and she always thought they loved her back, but then she found out they were tricking her, that they never loved her at all... maybe they were just using her love... 'I've been alone all along' - I think it means literally that through all that time that she's known the person, she hasn't had them as a real friend.

I don't think anyone's actually died or is about to die. The bit on telling 'myself that you're gone' doesn't have to literally mean they're dead, just that they're not there anymore for her, emotionally speakign. Besides, the line just after that says 'you're still with me'. Maybe that person hasn't even physically left her, it's just that she now knows they're completely shut off from her, and it's always been that way.

And she loves them so much that even after finding out she's been betrayed she still loves them ('but you still have all of me'), and the song's about her trying to end her love for someone who doesn't love her back.

Its bin doin me head in the fact no1 has said exactly what this is about!!!just that they think its amazin! which it is like but at least say wot u think its abot!!!! sshe used 2 be with some1 in the band, and basically she loved him badly and he didnt at all, she felt like the whole relationship was bollocks because he got wit some1 else an was thinkin bout some1 else the whole time when she was thinkin bout him. feel gutted 4 her like, bin there dun that! i love this song..its one of my favorties...the video is also amazing..i love the whole black and white thing...but to me this song is aobut someone who has lost a vvery important person be it a lover or a frend...i have herd taht this song is based on a short story written by former band member ben moody...which makes perfect sense to me...

I ADORE Evanescence and this song will always be among my favorites! However Hello moves me as well as Tourniquet. I love her voice which holds amazing quality..her voice can carry better than most I have heard with the exception of enya who I also adore..this song is absolutely gorgeus!
