This song is beautiful. Amy-lee's voice is second to none and seems to get to me anytime. If anyone wanst to know another song with amy lee at her best check on broken-seether featuring amy lee.

I never got the idea that this song was about a breakup. The lyrics more befit a relationship that should have ended a long time ago but hasn't. "I'm so tired of being here . . . if you have to leave, I wish that you would just leave . . . though you're still with me, I've been alone all along." The song, to me, is about staying in a loveless relationship because you hope things will eventually heal (even though don't seem to be doing so), or because you don't want to be alone (even though you have been all along).

This song makes me cry everytime I hear it. It Reminds of a situation I have with A good friends of mine. This is exactly how I would feel if he died, which I know it's going to happen soon. : (. This song is absolutely beautiful. It satifies every single emotion in my body.

As well I doubt it's about a break up song. I believe that it's a song she was writing in memory of A very good friend of hers, maybe even a lover who passed.
" i held your hand through all of these years but you still have...all of me" -those lyrics suggest it. Also The beginning of the chorus suggest that who ever she is singing about & her had alot of memories together.
"but if you have to leave

and it won't leave me alone" -That makes me believe that whoever she is singing about passed away and still haunts her mind.

Froggies -- The song that was based off of a story was Haunted =]. My Immortal was written by Ben when he was 15, it was Ev's first song, back before Amy and Ben even called themselves Evanescence.

Somewhere on Evboard (actually, it was a thread from Katya's cousin, but I'm not sure if it's still there or not), Amy said that in the My Immortal video she plays the part of a ghost, which is why she never touches the ground. I thought that was spiffy =].

anyways...since this IS songmeaning.net i would have to say what i think it means...

its about death...about a person that just lost someone very close and is trying to cope with the loss. she keeps thinking that that person is still there but they dont want them to be there...yet they do. i also think that the person might have gotten into a fight or something with the person that passed away right before they passed away and they keep thinking and thinking about it.

"but though your still with me, i've been alone all along"

this sentence shows that she still thinks about the person and feels him or her in her heart and in her mind...but then she realizes that that person is dead and can not come back.

well yeah...thats what i think it means...

My Immortal: definitely one of the best. I can compare my relationshio to a friend with this. She's kinda like my therapist/person that always helps me out, hence the line, "When you cry I wipe away all your tears. When you scream I fight away all your fears."

Man on Tv, you make me sick, you can come onto a board where someone has lost their son and you heckle them! Then, when someone mentions it, you say it's all just fun! Fun? Well you know what, I don't know the woman who lost her son, I don't have children so I wouldn't know the feeling. I assume from this neither do you. I have however, lost someone incredibly close to me, it kills a part of you. Something you cherish and you never want to let go or get over it. I hope you never lose someone because no one deserves that and no one deserves to see their children die before they do.

And also, what makes her a whore? Explain please? As far as you know she was in love with someone, you know what that feels like? You've simply assumed she slept around and that's pretty immature, in fact, I can't imagine you bein more than a spotty greasy little kid. In which case, I hope your parents outlive you because even they would be devestated.

good song, i didnt like it at first but it kinda got through to me and i really like it now...to me its about death or leaving, but also about being stabbed in the back by someone you cared about. i dont really know why i think that, but the lyrics and her voice and stuff, she just sounds betrayed.

I see how Amy Lee being a ghost in the video fits in with the song.

But I wanted to ask if anyone else thought that the video was similar to Christina Aguilera's 'The Voice Within'. Because there's the whole black and white theme, and the white dress walking through an empty town sorta thing. They even have the same hairstyle o.O.

I'm not saying that the songs have anything common but I was just wondering if anyone else thought the video's did.

Or is there some sort of friendship between the two artisits that I don't know about and they did this on purpose o.O

And I'm sorry if anyone has already commmented on this before and I'm making myself look stupid but I really didn't want to read 13 pages of comments.

I don't usually listen to any of Chrisitna's songs 'cause I basically don't like them (thought I'd add that incase someone has a rant at me for listening to pop when I'm on a rock type band thread) but 'Voice Within' is a pretty song and it isn't filled with the 'sexy type' of lyrics Chrsitina does like 'Dirtty'.

Also I think that 'Voice Within' was for a disney video, can't remember which one tho, so I think that's where FinchFever got his/her idea from.

i completely agree with BitterHandsResign. this song helped me through a difficult time in my own life, when i was struggling with my own weight problem. amy lee obviously understands how difficult it is, and i really respect her for writing a song about it.

Evanescence is just a mainstream band although not a bad band I wouldn’t put them as Gothic, all you people with Goth in your name or whatever, please get a clue. Lacuna Coil which has popped up a few times in this thread is an example of a good gothic metal band, their singer is a opera singer. My favourites are 'Heavens a Lie' and 'Swamped'.

Evanescence is popular because it fills the ultra mainstream void of darker angsty rock music with a female vocalist.

Amy Lee is alright singer but she is not opera quality, her voice hardly enchants me. The major problem for me though is that the rest of her band play some very bland rock music and at times do a truly horrible attempt at metal that makes even nu-metal rock. :(


For the record artists I like that are 'similar' to Evanescence and I use that very loosely are In Winter, Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, and Within Temptation, all of which incorporate female vocalists and dark lyrical themes, but these bands are considered to be symphonic metal/gothic metal rather than rock.

I would recommend listening to a few songs by Nightwish especially Nightwish - Nemo
the (opera) singer does a beautiful job.


Evanescence needs to stop thinking about selling records and concentrate more on gaining respect or wind up like so many mainstream bands and becoming has-beens.

i asked a bunch of people what they thought this song meant to them. my mom thinks that some dude left her, my dad thinks her boyfriend went to work, and my friend thinks that the girl's boyfriend died and is coming back to haunt her. i agree with my friend. she's trying to reconcile with herself by saying she did everything she could to help him like wiping away his tears, and fighting his fears and giving all of herself to him (her words not mine) and yet he still comes back to haunt her. so she just needs some grievance councelling then she'll be good to go get herself another biyfriend that dies and write a song about that.
