Ah, mercy, mercy me,
Ah, things ain't what they used to be, no, no.
Where did all the blue skies go?
Poison is the wind that blows from the north and south and east.
Mercy, mercy me,
Ah, things ain't what they used to be, no, no.
Oil wasted on the ocean and upon
Our seas fish full of mercury,
Oh, mercy, mercy me.
Ah, things ain't what they used to be, no, no, no.
Radiation underground and in the sky;
Animals and birds who live near by are dying.
Oh, mercy, mercy me.
Ah, things ain't what they used to be.
What about this over crowded land?
How much more abuse from man can she stand?
Ah, things ain't what they used to be, no, no.
Where did all the blue skies go?
Poison is the wind that blows from the north and south and east.
Mercy, mercy me,
Ah, things ain't what they used to be, no, no.
Oil wasted on the ocean and upon
Our seas fish full of mercury,
Oh, mercy, mercy me.
Ah, things ain't what they used to be, no, no, no.
Radiation underground and in the sky;
Animals and birds who live near by are dying.
Oh, mercy, mercy me.
Ah, things ain't what they used to be.
What about this over crowded land?
How much more abuse from man can she stand?

This overpopulation, because of mankind's activities, is spreading into areas that were previously not as populated. This is adversely affecting all kinds of flora and fauna. Mankind is the most(?) intelligent life form on the planet but because selfishness and greed are in control, the world is in a downward spiral (which mankind eventually won't be able to reverse).
When I was (much) younger, I saw one of those back to school folder type items with the cool pictures on it. Well, this particular one had a picture of a skeleton driving a bulldozer. Behind the bulldozer was nothing but pavement and highway. In front of the bulldozer there were trees, deer, wolves and birds all being pushed out of the way.
The song, mercy, mercy me is a warning, to us, about direction that we are headiing in. Mother Earth is forgiving but for how much longer? The sad part is that this song (the album that it is on) is over thirty-five years old (having been cut in 1971). Will we ever learn????
I agree with the masked magician, shocked to find such few comments.
you can hear it too. How the song changes into something sad...
