i love how it's so human....he admits how angry she made him,...."there were times when i could have strangled/murdered her' but you know i'd hate anything to happen to her", but he loves her and freaks out that she won't come out of the coma

I've always thought that this symbolised him detaching himself from heterosexuality - as if the 'girl' is dying along with his interest in women as sexual beings. Just my opinion though :]

I could've sworn this was one of the most sarcastic and biting songs that ever existed.

I ignore that because... Because, yeah, I forgot about that part of the song. Forgive me, but at least my interpretation works for the part I remembered.

As for the ending, it makes sense that he'd want to put a conclusion to things, as opposed to just waiting for her to die. Cough cough, covering my ass.

I think most of Morrisseys songs are full of geuine feelings and emotion but I think sometimes he reaches too far. Other than this song being catchy, I don't think there's nothing more to it.

Maybe I'm missing something.

i've always wondered whether he put her in a coma or not. its almost like he's confessing what he did. 'but you know i would hate anything to happen to her'... like he just went pyscho and didn't mean to hurt her.

I agree with buterflykiss, sort of. The girlfriend in a coma represents how girls (and relationships with them) are almost dead to him. The whisper my last good bye part is him saying "I'll say goodbye fondly, because there were good times" but he's more or less through with women. This doesn't necessarily mean he'll be playing with the other team, although you could interpret it that way. Morrissey always keeps the line of sexuality blurred in his songs.

I downloaded this song after I read "Girlfriend in a Coma" by Douglas Coupland. I don't think there's a direct connection, other than the girl's in a coma, but they're both amazing. A must-read and a must-hear, to be cliche.

i love this song and i also saw the sarcasm in this song. if you picture it, you either come up with two images. he's so distraut that he doesn't want to see her but he keeps asking if she's ok or you can look at it as this nervous paranoid guy who is hiding something.... atleast thats what i noticed.

I think its meant to be a boyfriend who is fed up with his girlfriend and is secretly relieved that she is in a Coma because it means he might be rid of her without having to ditch her. At the same time he has to pretend to care.

Very black humour.

This song means a lot to my girlfriend and I, it really is our song. I've never beaten her up or put her into a coma, but before we were going out I told her that if she was in a coma I would come and sing this song to her. We were going out 5 days later. So cute!

Lol, I couldnt believe how different this song was to everybody, so I signed up! So first post!
I always saw this song as soooo different from what everyone else is saying...I guess I saw it as like, the guy is kinda falling in love, and he's accepting that he's in love, but is going through a kinda bittersweet emotion (Let me whisper my last goodbye, I know its serious) - and 'Do you really think she'll pull through' meaning 'Do you think we'll make it?'
Ok, I can see where there might be flaws in my theory lol, but I only got into The Smiths and Morrissey a few months ago, and I love metaphors and stuff, so I guess I saw it all as one big metaphor!
HOW fab is this site, though? It's the best best idea for a website I've ever seen!

I thought this song was just trying to emphasize the bitersweet realilty of being in a relationship. You can care about someone and not always give them a lot of respect. You can also easily hurt someone you care about even though you might not have meant to, or regret it later. It think the song is pretty vague on purpose. I don't think it's about a person who is actually in a coma. It's just a senerio to provide a feeling. It's showing that every relationship has it's good an bad points and when you're put in a traumatic circumstance like that your brain goes through all these thoughts. You briefly get angry at the person and then start to cry because you remembered something great about them.. this song illustrates an emotional rollercoaster that everyone goes through when something bad happens to someone close to them.

exactly, SwedishFish, the girl's not really in a coma. Seems to me just a little diddy/story he came up with, and it's a great visual way to talk about this guy who is at a stand-still with his girlfriend.

this has got to be the shortest Smith's song...
