Lyrics for #40 (VH1 Storytellers version) as interpreted by Michael

#40 (VH1 Storytellers version) Lyrics
Share the time again
I spend with you
A friend is always good to have
But a lover's kiss is better than angels raining down at me
I dream of you at times when your by my side
Dream you're not just like you are
So troubled and doubling my pain
Just one more tear
You shed for me
I wish that I could climb inside your mind
And spend some time and hug and hold you
And mold you into what i'd like
But no i can't do this
Just a kiss to spend a while by you
And your familiar smile and voice

I lay awake
Then you lean back and smiling
On you
Most everything you do for me, I say
And the while let's make our way
And feel warm
In the middle of this storm with you
Like an angel

Oh, what the friends say is good is right
I say
When you were again
And you were my friend
Before the lie
This one
Say yes I do
And with you
Sometimes

But while i do my best
With all the rest i leave to you
Can't wait for the hour
And when two things become this
All this trouble from a kiss from you, i'll do it
And then you come up smiling
And I'm thrown
Into I get a little storm with you, I'll do it

Always
Lover, line up and yeah
The road to you is long and I've been on it for a while
And a need a warm embrace
I'll take a break
And say I want to leave you awake

Always

I feel tired...

this song is beautiful...my favorite line is: a friend is good to have but a lover's kiss is better than angels raining down on me. it's soo sweet and i can relate to it, i want something more than my friendship with him, but i love our friendship and i don't want to ever lose it

"#40" is one of Matthews' more saturated love songs. This song's premise, which is that of true love, is fairly simple.

This is by far one of my most favourite DMB songs. IT is so simple yet it weaves such an intricate story. I love it.

This is probably one of the very few Dave Matthews songs that can create a swell of mixed emotions. The song is... well... perfect. As sevenfooter50 said, it relates to everyone on some deep level. The lyrics (after numerous changes) should have been kept in this beautiful format. Dave is truly a poet in his own right. This song is one that reminds me of someone special... and what could have been. It is almost eloquently haunting in it's sheer beauty... Dave is the man!

This is the best version of the song. I love the lyric "A friend is always good to have
But a lover's kiss is better than angels raining down at me". That is my favorite!

this song is just beautiful. he wrote it with all of these phrases like "a friend is always good to have, but a lover's kisses are better than angels raining down on me" and it makes you wonder...how does he know how you feel about someone?

I was lucky enough to see this one played live last summer, its simply amazing, i prefer the LS version over the Storytellers version, its shorter and sweeter.

Let me hear the opening chords to this song and I'm in. It doesnt matter how he changes the lyrics from one version to the other, its just different icing on the cake. Never being played in entirety makes the song that much more special for the meaning Dave has said it holds in regard to his wife, and it makes it that much more immaculate to hear if one is lucky enough to catch it in concert.

This song reminds me of a friend of mine who lives five states away, she comes and visits over the holidays and spends the summers with her dad here in the town i live in. While she's here, i'm in heaven, when she's not, life is just boaring. The reason it reminds me of her is that she a boyfriend and the last time she came to visit it was hard to talk with her and hang out because of him, and i wanted to "climb insider" her "mind, and hug and hold" her "and mold her into what i like" which would be single...but i can't....so i'll just have to wait and see what comes about.

There are so many parts i love with this song. One is this verse:
"But while i do my best
With all the rest i leave to you
Can't wait for the hour
And when two things become this
All this trouble for a kiss from you, i'll do it
And then you come up smiling
And I'm thrown
Into I get a little storm with you, I'll do it "

I love it because to me its saying. .ill do my best to make things happen with you but the rest if up to you..and hes so excited for the hour when they are together and its so complicated but he'll do it all for a kiss..and when they do she is smiling and happy and he sees her and is "thrown" and taken aback. and i guess maybe they get in a little fight because of what they're doin. .but its worth it? ok. .the last part i really dont know. .maybe the whole thing i dont know. .but its wonderful song and thats all that matters.

This is the most beautiful Dave song that I know of. It just reminds me of a relationship that hurt, but I wanted it anyway. This song just makes me want to cry. It's so lovely.

This is actually not from Storytellers. There was no #40 at Storytellers.
This is from 5/10/95.
