Lyrics for Company Calls as interpreted by weezerific:cutlery

Company Calls Lyrics
I'll take the best of your bad moods
And dress them up to make a better you
Because all the company calls amount to one paycheck
I'd squeeze a heart through my fingertip
But I type too slow to make expressions stick
And it's like TV with a microchip

Set your sights to sink the partyline
Because it's so tired
Set your sights! Destroy this mock-shrine
Because it's so tired

Let's cut our losses at both ends
And aim your car away from all our friends
Leaving the dishes stacked in the sink

Set your sights to sink the partyline
Because it's so tired
Set your sights! Destroy this mock-shrine
Because it's so tired

I'd keep a distance because the complications cloud it all
And mail a postcard sending greetings from the Eastern Bloc
Synapse to synapse: possibilities will thin or fade
Your wedding figurines: I'd melt so I could drink them in
And drink them in, and drink them in

I'll take the best of your bad moods
And dress them up to make a better you
Because all the company calls amount to one paycheck

Set your sights to sink the partyline
Because it's so tired
Set your sights! Destroy this mock-shrine
Because it's so tired

It seems that the speaker is frustrated; with work (all the company calls - which bother people - come to one paycheck, which is insignificant in the long run), sociality (i type too slow to make expression stick..) and this frustration comes out to venting, but in the end the venting doesnt accomplish anything, and there are worse situations, but even though chances are fleeting and so much is frustrating, there is still hope for happiness - which leads us to the epilogue...

But, ummm, the epilogue isn't happy.

does this song seem to be like him kinda getting drunk before he storms into their wedding in the epilogue? I always pictured it that way...

cheesepickle, i think, has it.
this song gives off a drinking atmoshpere where he's thinking about all the things in that relationship and what became of it, and then the epilogue gives of a drunken emotion feel, where hes obvioulsy hurt and angry.

we have the facts and we're voting yes is a story dude... he's telling a damn story. if the character gets drunk, then he gets drunk. its his story.

basically this song is ben getting drunk while finding out that his one-night stand or previous girlfriend from title track is getting married. squeezing a heart through his fingertip is probably referring to him trying to tell her thru email or aim or whatever what his true feelings are but he types too slow so he doesnt see it as effective. as for sending a postcard from the eastern block, he wants to acknowledge the marriage and his loss but he cant come to grips with it in person so he needs to keep a distance. and then it flows into the epilogue which is the actual wedding. this whole album relates to wanting a relationship with someone you cant do it with because they are already taken and then troubles that that causes. check out some of the input from other members on different songs and youll see what i mean. hope this helps out a bit.

I really don't understand why everyone seems to like the epilogue better. This song is a lot better in my opinion.

I love this song, but i like the epilogue better. They are both beautiful, like two volumes of one novel. They fit together perfectly.

Epilogue kicks this song's ass, no offense. this one is great as well, but Epilogue is best.

I've always heard that it was an online relationship. That would explain the line "i'd squeeze a heart through my fingertip but i type too slow to make expressions stick. and it's like TV with a microchip."

and

"i'd keep a distance 'cause the complications cloud it all, and mail a postcard sending grettings from the eastern bloc."

Maybe their relationship is forbidden, and she is married. *shrug*

it could be an online relationship, though...

it could also be long-distance... when you only see someone twice a month, you use any means possible to stay in contact with them.

This is one of the best Death Cab songs in my opinion. It's just got the pop and rock side to it in the singalong chorus and the bouncy rhythm.

Set your sights!

so this whole time i have been trying to understand what he means by
Your wedding figurines: I'd melt so I could drink them in

so maybe i dont know he wants to melt them to forget or something
but why drink them in
what the heck

The wedding figurines line... could be my all time favorite single sentence in music.

In the next song he claims the wedding figurines "that I took were so real", an idea of idealism. The two figures on the cake look perfect, what a wedding should be, the ideal husband and wife.

He would take those figurines, melt them, drink them in and make them apart of himself. A most beautiful and indirect way of saying he wants that perfect marriage. He wants that ideal family... but it's all gone now

It sounds to me like he is drunk (obviously), and reminiscing on his friendship with this woman, whom he adorned as more than a friend.

"And aim your car away from all our friends"
Meaning: Lets leave everyone behind and start a life together.

He'd keep a distance from her because he is not happy about her new marriage. He would figuratively take those figurines and melt them, so that the realization would kind of sink in to his skin; He missed his chance, his friend is married, and he is drunk and not making any sense.

Fun times!

why does every always think all songs are love songs? I think Gibbard has deeper things to write about than women. This song is about the government, or anarchy, if you will. It's in the chorus; "Destroy this mock shrine... sink the partyline" He's fed up with the government. He's tired of being paid (or observing others being paid) to dress up politicians and make them look like good people.
